Phil Silvers really showed his comedic talent in this hilarious send up of life at a small, overlooked US Army base. Always looking to make a big score, he runs gambling, dances, trying to produce shows, with the usual get rich quick scheme ending.
Paul Ford, who portrayed Colonel Hall, is perfect as the straight man, always trying to catch Bilko running whatever scheme he has going, and is great to watch the interaction between the two.
In the background, actors who went on to other roles. Allan Melvin, who portrays Corporal Henshaw, became Archie Bunker's best friend Barney on "All in the Family."
Terry Carter, who portrayed Pvt Sugie, went on to star as Colonel Tighe in the original "Battlestar Galactica."
Joe E Ross, who portrayed M/Sgt Ritzik, went onto "Car 54, Where Are You?"
And George Kennedy made his TV debut as MP Sgt Kennedy in 15 episodes, very brief, bit parts, that were all uncredited. But he went on to bigger things, and from the very first bit part, I recognized him right away.
My favorite episode has to be from Season 1, episode 4, "The Horse." Colonel Hall is hilarious as he is disturbed by the nightly activities centered around hiding a horse on an army base.
If you want comedy at it's finest, this is the series to watch. Jam packed with laughs and gags and with Phil ad-libbing almost all of the dialogue, it's top flight comedy.
