Bob Biswas (2021)
A must watch.
Great acting by Abhishek, he gave 100% for the role.
Some loop holes in the plot, but movie is worth the watch.
Two of the characters, Dhonu and Kaali da, deserve their own spinoffs.
Manmarziyaan (2018)
For those who have loved someone...
For me a good love-story-movie is the one which makes you fall in love again, either be it with your family or with your wife or girlfriend or even an ex.
Manmarziyaan did that.
It emphasizes the fact that, if something like love is meant to be yours, it will BE yours, you don't need to grab or hold it tight.
This is a movie for those who have loved someone with all their heart and I think people in arranged marriage will relate more to the story.
It beautifully shows the process of how two people agreeing to do arranged marriage get to know each other, how they become friends first and then lovers.
Although the basis of the story can be framed as a love triangle, direction/screenplay of the story bring the novelty, kudos to Anurag and Kanika for that!
The movie needs to be watched for the intensity of the emotions of main characters and for the pitch-perfect use of music.
Abhishek Bachchan speaks a volume through his eyes and owns the movie.
Tapsee fits the role effortlessly and Vicky Kaushal impresses with his 100% effort as usual.
Happy Journey (2014)
Not A Happy Journey!
Happy Journey
Happy Journey is a failed attempt of director Sachin Kundalkar to tell a story differently.
The movie could have been a lot better, if the director had not corrupted it too much with his hunger of creating differently funny, witty-yet-likable, layered characters.
This is the story of a brother(Niranjan) and a sister (Janaki) who have not known each other closely, because the brother is made to go away to Dubai to earn money, very soon after arrival of his sister. Although they don't know much about each other, they still love and care about each other in their own way. When Janaki dies young due to an incurable disease, she comes back to haunt and change her brother to teach him to live life to its fullest while it matters.
The story is worth making the movie, not because there are no good looking, loveable ghost movies made before, where ghost teaches value of life to human, but because....
No, even the story is not new!
So, having said that, if you are making a movie on a kind of old, predictable story, then the direction, characters, dialogues should be at par. They should make audience overlook the story.
This is where Sachin Kundalkar fails and gets carried away. The director here tries too hard to go out of the box and bring unrealistic characters to life. Not only the movie is full of flaws, it also is full of patch works where it looks like the story is forced to follow only the happy path.
Why Janaki always stays in the van? why Niranjan's parents never catch him in the van where he is spending time with his sister? How convincing it is that Nirajan's love (Alice, played by Kritika Deo and Pallavi Subhash) since childhood is also unmarried even after being older than 35 years, just because her father is a gangster?
The unanswered questions keep on piling up even before you reach half of the movie and then onwards you just give up thinking. You just realise that you have to enjoy the movie because it has 'Happy' in its name. The director tries to comment upon family issues, society issues, love issues etc. etc. in his own way, but you never get entertained. Don't go for this self proclaiming happy ride!
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017)
Good movie with some wrong detours
First things first!
Movies like Shubh Mangal Savdhan (SMS) should be made.
It's a good movie.
It's enjoyable and different from regular rom-com movies made in Hindi.
You need to be creative to comment on delicate subjects like erectile dysfunction, in a light-hearted and engaging way. The performances and writing have to be top-notch otherwise it will be a boring lecture for viewers. SMS delivers on all these fronts, story is good and nicely narrated, movie length is apt, performances are up to the mark (of EACH and EVERY actor/actress).
Having said that, you have to walk on the edge and shouldn't loose the track between entertainment and the message that you want to pass on, otherwise you would be either very preachy or only masala movie. This is where the movie lacks and it does loose the track. There are some scenes where you don't believe what is happening, you feel this much exaggeration is not required. The movie bends more towards the entertainment in some scenes, although it does gather some laughs, viewers won't relate to such scenes.
But, overall if you look at the bigger picture or the message/s this movie is trying to pass on, you will forgive all such wrong detours the movie takes. So this movie should be definitely watched.
Jin ling shi san chai (2011)
Brilliant, Heart Touching story told effectively
It's a Brilliant, Heart Touching story told so effectively that it echoes in your mind for a long long time. Effortless acting by each and every actor/actress in the movie makes it a worthy experience. Although the plot is not very attractive there is not a moment when you get bored.
Most of the war movies deal with the emotions of soldiers and/or their relatives, but this movie really takes you into the world of innocents suffering because of the war. Not to forget that all war scenes are also shot brilliantly. Hats off to the director and cinematographer.
It's a must watch for everyone!
