Chopping Mall (1986)
Did everybody see the same movie I did?
The movie I saw entitled "Chopping Mall" was a reeeaaally stupid '80s, well, let's say, POS.
The cover was drawings of a blood pool with eyes in it, beside a paper shopping bag full of flesh. I even rented the "unrated version" so I could see the "brutal dismemberment" promised in all of its VHS, 260p glory. (This was for a sleepover where I was given the duty of getting the most graphically violent horror movie the rental store had.) Well, judging by the title and the box, this was it.
What I got, however, was to go down in my neighborhood as "The s--ttiest, stupid a-- piece of s--t movie" anyone had ever had the displeasure of wasting 2:30h (or something) on in their entire life.
That was 1992. FF to 2005, my sister goes to get a DVD to rent for my nephew and I to watch. We were in a "spooky" mood. She returns with a pizza, Pepsi, breadsticks, and a movie.
"Holy s--t! This is on DVD?!?" I gasped. She asked why, I said "Can we watch it NOW?" Then she knew.
BOTTOM LINE: According to the box this is a "terrifying" account of what would happen if a "high-tech" security system went awry in the "seemingly distant year of (wait for it)...1996!"
No actual "blood" to speak of.
The X Files: The Truth (2002)
Mulder & Scully: YES Aliens: NO!
I was a longtime fan of the X-Files, although I never really got into it until the movie hit. What caught me, and most other people, so much was the acting relationship between Mulder (Duchovney) and Scully (Anderson). (Rumors abound that the relationship got more heated in real life behind-the-scenes).
I just wanted to comment on a statement another reviewer made about the actors. Any TRUE fan loved Duchovney and Anderson. Even the fact that she remembered the stand-in's names (Patrick and Gish) was an outragious insult to any real X-Phile's standing. The reason why FOX went back to the originals was that an outstanding majority of people tuned-out after they heard of the replacements coming back for another season (including me).
Basically, if you don't like David and Gillian, you don't like the X-Files.
However, I do agree with cutting the whole UFO/alien takeover thing. It could've been a better show with maybe a couple of abduction episodes, with Mulder's drive coming from having his own sister taken away (as described in the final episode), but it killed the show to have it be the main focus of so many, many episodes.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
You've probably seen JC before, but here you see him ACT...
...and do a damn fine job of it, if I do say so myself.
It goes like this: Carrey has a girlfriend, but Wood ALSO likes said girlfriend. Wood points out Carrey's faults to girlfriend. Girlfriend erases Carrey from mind. Carrey finds out, has girlfriend erased from HIS mind. Meanwhile, Wood reproduces Carrey's actions for girlfriend, who can then remember having done this before. Back at mind erasure HQ, Carrey rediscovers love for girlfriend, played by Diaz. So now Carrey and Diaz love eachother again, but...now they have NO idea who eachother is. Insanity ensues.
I have been very impressed by recent films; add 1 to the list. 5/5
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
All-time best movie; cannot be outdone.
If only A. Kutcher had made thrillers all this time, instead of wasting his time on low-brow teen comedies (DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR?)... he could've, should've, and WOULD'VE been one of, if not 'the' biggest and most highly paid actors in Hollywood.
Any minute detail of the film I reveal would probably ruin it because it's probably "changed" during the course of the film, but I can sum it up for you...
Ashton ('s character) keeps journals of everything that happens every day, as instructed by his father. Because of a rare brain disease, passed on by his father, he can read any part of that journal and zap back to that point, change one or two details, then zap back to the present. The only problem with this uber-cool ability is that it can effect the present direly.
It's confusing at first, but it eases you into understanding very quickly.
