Going to Mars (2023)
A most wonderful poet
An inspirational look at poet Nikki Giovanni who has lived a life and has a great ability to connect with her poetry over many years. It is fascinating to hear her being interviewed by James Baldwin. Beautiful voiceovers of Nikki reciting her poems with accompanying images. Poignant and yet very real and unapologetic in her thoughts and opinions :
"travels through time and space to reveal the enduring influence of Nikki Giovanni, one of America's greatest living artists and social commentators. Giovanni reckons with the inevitable passing of time in intimate vérité and revealing archival footage." Rotten Tomatoes.
Cousins (2021)
Beautifully acted film
Beautifully acted film. Cousins tell the story of the Maori people both from the past perspective with the horrors of residential schools/orphanages as well as Maori participation in the war, to today's issues of culture and land grabs. Throughout there are the wonderful experiences of family and of belonging as well as pride in culture. While it is a common story of native/aboriginal people, it cannot be told and portrayed enough. Wonderful performances by Rachel House who appears in several Taiki Waititi films as well as Tioraore NgataiMelbourne. However, all the performances are strong and heartfelt.
The Forty-Year-Old Version (2020)
Thoughtful portrayal of the artist
Excellent performances and a theme that crosses racial lines
Immigration Nation (2020)
Excellent documentary
I could have seen more episodes on this complex issue. I would have liked to have seen something on the contribution of illegal immigration to crime and gangs. But the episode called The Right Way was fabulous as immigration has become - you are damned if do and damned if you don't. Truly a broken system.
The Psychosis of Whiteness (2018)
Important film
We have to look at all films with a critical eye. This documentary forces us to face the "white savior" perspective - we must always take this into account in our evaluations.
Love & Friendship (2016)
Delicious satire of Austen period pieces
Hilarious and sharp satire - great performances by all.
Diane (2018)
Excellent portrayal of small lives
Excellent performances by seasoned women. Mary Kay Place is wonderful- the relationships portrayed realistically.
