The Secret Rules of Modern Living: Algorithms (2015)
Great watch for non-technical commoners
Here's the irony -- I ended up watching this fascinating documentary on algorithms *because* of Netflix's (extremely accurate) recommendation algorithm.
As someone who works with algorithms in the field, I found this documentary to be a super enjoyable watch. This documentary, in my opinion, will especially be a good watch for those curious about the BIG world of algorithms, especially given the fact that the documentary neatly explains many of the most widely used algorithms in real life and shows how it's entrenched in nearly every part of our modern lives. This should also be a good watch for young children to get them curious about algorithms and computer science in general.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
A must watch for every Military fan and WWII enthusiast
For me, this was a long pending movie to watch. It was recommended to me over and over again, both online and IRL and now I know why.
This movie's opening scene has to be among the top 3 of all time, considering a large proportion of this movie's budget went towards crafting the opening sequence.
Steven Spielberg's direction is near perfect and filmography is brilliant.
Tom Hanks does a brilliant job portraying the hardships of the battlefield, all the while leading a team to search for the last surviving sibling, in accordance with the 'Sole Survivor Policy' of the US Military.
The plot unfolds beautifully with some critical twists adding to the effect.
The Pre-climax and Climax bring the curtains down really well, tying up all the loose ends. The movie ends with a powerful message that is sure to dampen even the toughest of hearts.
Overall, a well scripted movie backed up by an incredible cast and an exceptionally talented director.
This movie gives a perspective that other War movies rarely depict.
Would surely recommend.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The second best movie I have EVER watched.
I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time, but never could. Finally got an opportunity to see it and to be honest, I was blown away by it. The movie lived up to it's rating here on IMDb.
For me, it's one the finest movies I've ever seen. The entire story is gripping and keeps you on the edge of your seat for it's entire duration. The movie wonderfully depicts the harsh life in prison, the helplessness and the eventual coping of the situation.
Freeman plays his role as the supporting actor wonderfully well and his narration is breathtaking. This movie has some of the most amazing dialogues ever in a Hollywood movie.
The core plot of the movie revolves around "hope" and the ability to see the silver lining even in the face of extremely challenging situations.
I could draw lots of parallels between this and Schindler's list, which is my most favorite movie of all time. Worth the watch. If you haven't watched this, YOU MUST.
This movie could possibly change your life.
Schindler's List (1993)
Probably the most heart touching movie ever!
As a millenial, the happenings of World War 2 and The Holocaust was probably one of the least understood topics of our generation. This movie takes the viewers right into the gruesome but realistic happenings of The Holocaust, in the backdrop of the Second World War.
Steven Spielberg has done a fantastic job of making this movie as close to perfection as possible. The direction, the acting, especially that of Liam Neeson deserves applause and the black and white portrayal makes it even more heartening and gives a sense of timelessness, adds more to the 'hopelessness' theme as other reviewers here have mentioned. The movie is pretty long, about >3 hours but every second spent on this movie is worth.
The story-line develops smoothly. It tracks the journey of a man named Oskar Schindler from a War Profiteer to that of a man who'd go on to save over a thousand Jewish lives from the horrors of The Holocaust. It also gives a very realistic portrayal of the life in Nazi occupied Poland.
There's one particular scene that will melt away the toughest of hearts. I won't spoil it for you, but it's about a girl in red!
Overall, it's one of the best movies made in the history of Hollywood and it's the best movie about World War 2 and The Holocaust.
Worth watching, every bit. Personally for me, it's one of the best movies ever. Go watch it. 10/10.
