Manny (2014)
how the world of boxing works
the movie is very interesting documentary about Manny Pacquiao's life, success, and actual behind the scenes things. but i have a different take about the movie than most people, i think it really just showed how corrupt boxing can be, in a very subtle way, and how stars are made. the movie was mainly just about Manny, but for me it opened my eyes about many things. bare with me a little. I think the true purpose of this movie is just to subtly tell people how corrupt Bob Arum is. i even read his wikipedia page, and it is full of controversy, how he bribed people. SPOILER: so the ending was obviously just Bob arum trying to make a new star for people, the new young guy Bradley, so he paid the judges off... interestingly, he sponsored BOTH boxers, the fitness guy even told us many times how Manny is used, and Bob is the only one making profit here. there are many subtle hints by Mayweather too that he won't fight with Manny until he is sponsored by bob arum .fearing of lawsuit they don't say anything bad about him, they just implied he is paying off judges, by saying "how can a guy at 105pounds win against a much skilled guy who is 150 pounds... he CANT..." first seemed idiotic statement since he won against them. but the end got me thinking that all Bob did was to make a legend to make more profit for himself (and for Manny too at that time). to make a legend you need him to win in all leagues, meaning he IS a good fighter but people were probably bribed along the way (judges, maybe fighters, etc, i don't know) without knowledge of Manny. there was a win by decision of him too which should have been a loss. (probably judges paid) but this time he was on the winning side, because his sponsor Bob Arum still had plans with him, making him into a legend. but then when he became a legend, it was time for a new champion and more money, the ending with Bradley. that judge decision was so bad, that in wikipedia it states WBO's Championship Committee would review the video of the fight with five independent judges. people made a vote and even asked some other professional boxers/commentators what do they think about it, and all of them gave it to Manny. but doesn't matter, only NSAC can change the result. and they didn't, so later they had a fight again with Bradley which was won by Manny.
so good to keep this in mind how stars are made and how hard working honest people are used in that world. disgusting. but the movie was an eye opener for me, and i guess they couldn't focus more on Bob Arum's corruptive nature due to fear of lawsuits for defamation.
Rampage: Capital Punishment (2014)
Brave movie! But it is thought provoking nonetheless
First of all, i haven't watched the first movie yet, but i will definitely do it now. I probably had low expectations because the review "holds a number of hostages as a political platform to awaken humanity" I thought what can he possibly say to awaken us in the 21st century. i predicted as much as what he said before watching it, but i would have never guessed they were gonna be so brave with their opinions. So first of all, i think what he said as causes of problems are true, all of them. They even showed real pictures/videos from real life scenes. only problem anyone probably has is with his methods and his conclusions. They probably did it for shock value, because all the problems are true, but there are many other solutions to it, and i was pleasantly surprised that they didn't chicken out with the execution. now I'm gonna use a lot of spoilers so read no further unless you have already watched it: so for example in movies they try to emphasize on an emotionally good thing about the main character if he is evil, else the movie will alienate most of its viewers. (for example, guy hates humans because they kill animals, so he defends animals and never kills them, but kills humans) here we had some of that, like he likes his mother, but a cheap solution for this movie would have been like rich people killed his mother. but it had nothing to do with it, he even said this is bigger than family. another brave thing is his easy mindset to kill humans. cheap shot in movies is they show you how people will try to kill him unless he shows power. but the director didn't even wait for that to happen, he just shot everybody who moved and didn't even explain it, only later at the interview that every war for peace, you kill someone, and he does the same. the ending was very brave too, alienating probably ALL his viewers who still believed him somewhat, with the children part giving her a weapon and telling her to shoot her parents and herself. (despite him saying he loved his parents). many movies in the end try to have some positive life lessons... here it is the most negative i've ever seen by repeatedly putting emphasis on killing the rich, i can't believe this movie is not censored in some countries :D
but the movie was all about the 10-20 minute rant he did, which was interesting, but the other things were just for shock value(except when the swat guy convinced the hostage to go back made me laugh a bit :D) it made the rant more real.
but i say it was thought provoking because what he said problems were true, he just provided a weak solution to it, but this movie might make you think how to solve those issues. making a movie about it, is a step to solving it. i really liked the acting too, it was most of the time believable. although i didn't really see that much fear and confusion on other actors, but at least Brender Fletcher seemed credible (maybe he believes those things in real life too)
