MerPeople (2023)
You had all the best Merfolk right there?!?!
First off that silly drama in scene one does more to hurt the Mermaid industry than I can even begin to get into here. Such silly drama, and can totally get us banned from local pools by concerned parents. So thanks Netflix.
Second, you had some of the best and most interesting Merfolk right there! Hannah at your fingertips, and you barely talked to her. Look I'm sure Sparkles is lovely, but I want to have an hour talking to Hannah!!
Also soooo Mertailor centric. Frankly kinda rude to the other makers that you gave so very much time to just this one artist. Finfolk is clearly the other half of that particular level if mercrafting, and you didn't even toss them a mention let alone get a second perspective on the industry.
Honestly the best part was seeing the older Weeki mermaids, and their talent and joy.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Should have used a water tank
I could say a lot about the plot, and how really no one is the good guy here. Which makes it rather hard to care about any of this.
But let's set that aside. The underwater cgi, was just bad. If you're going to shoot that much footage dish there, get a water tank, some freedive lessons, and do it right.
You can't expect to release at the same time as Avatar, which has a new longest breath hold in a movie when you just bad cgi your underwater action.
Say what you want about the two movies, with ridiculous metals that break science and have blue people...but at least one of them the actors could swim!
Uncoupled (2022)
Funny with some real
Great series with a good sense of humor and some genuine characters.
I really liked that beneath the humor they actually do bring up a lot of real issues of the here and now. From the use of condoms in dating to the fact that male breast cancer exists. Dealing with feelings is a big part of life, and it's nice to see it addressed head on from a new perspective.
Making Fun: Guitar Boat (2022)
Best Build Yet
Honestly this one was a complete win. The kid was likable, the build was gorgeous, the thing worked, there was SO much Math <3, and the lightning was genius. Seriously this boat could be in a music video or a photoshoot. Beautiful work.
Annihilation (2018)
Hard book to adapt, and much of the point was missed.
I see a lot of reviews talking about the director like he came up with the plot. This was a book by Jeff VanderMeer. Honestly I never thought even with today's tech that a decent adaptation of this book could be brought to the screen.
I'm the end it wasn't the so-so cgi that failed. It was the adaptation.
Several key elements were changed probably to give a more linear and understandable story, and characters you could connect with. But the story is supposed to be a mystery. It's supposed to boggle the mind and challenge your perception. They explained more about what was going on in the first 20 min of this movie than the original did in three books, and it wasn't an improvement.
The movie places our main character as an antagonist, one who fights with this unknown. In the book she is anything but, she's the one who comes to term with it and embraces it the most. Who appreciates it, and sees it's beauty.
She's a social outcast by choice, she loves plants...and the original plot has so much more plants than even this movie implied.
It's supposed to be about radical change, and would a complete change, with humans melded to nature and their egos gone, be better? Would the earth be better without us? Do we deserve to thrive?
And of course the biggest change/flaw...the lighthouse doesn't go down. The "shimmer" doesn't go away. Humans do not win.
And perhaps that's a good thing.
So it captures the otherworldly and the horror, but totally fails to set you contemplating if the real horror is on the other side of the wall. And maybe this is the right thing to have happen.
The Last Airbender (2010)
Go with an Open Mind and enjoy the Bending!
Overall, as a fan of the show, I really enjoyed it. Visually stunning, wonderful representations of the costumes, good sets. The different bending techniques were beautifully displayed; made me want to learn Tai-Chi! The casting was innovative and chose more for acting and character than visual accuracy, which I think was a good choice in many cases. Did the movie follow the plot of season 1 exactly, no of course not. They condensed a whole season into a 2hr movie. And did a great job. Fans will see many of their favorite elements: the blue spirit with matched blades, Momo, Appa (who looked a lot like a luck dragon), all types of bending, a great air staff for Ang, and much more. For those unfamiliar with the series it was broken down and throughly explained, almost overwhelmed with info!
I've heard a lot of complaints about the ethnicities used in casting. But I believe the movie held true to the ideals of the show. Each nation, each area of the world, represented by a different ethnicity. At no point were all the characters on an entire planet supposed to be Asian.
Oh, and they pronounce Ang differently, why?
What I missed most from the original series was its sense of humor. There was a serious attempt at making the movie all about big epic battles and Ang's inner conflict, LOTR style...which didn't work. The original series plays heavily on the characters personalities and humor. The series has a lot of secondary characters, which can make it difficult to develop all the characters fully in only two hours. However, Sokka's bad jokes and humorous character were sorely missing from the film. Especially when we are expected to believe in his romance with Yue very quickly; a bit more character building would have helped with this. I enjoyed the references to many different parts of the 1st season, but felt the movie could have done with less journey and more character interaction. That being said I felt he explored Ang and Prince Zuko's characters very well. Even Uncle, who physically looked very different, played his part with just the right amount of relaxation and wisdom. Excellent casting for Yue by the way, spot on!
The best addition to the movie was the need for fire to be present in order to fire bend. I always felt this was lacking in the series. If you put an earth bender in a metal cage they are trapped, but put a fire bender on a row boat and they can create fire? That Uncle could create fire from nothing added a nice dimension to his character.
Music was a bit lackluster. I only really noticed it during the battle scenes. Where they tried, and failed, to create a Two-Towers inspiring battle scene moment.
(Spoiler Alert) The only other major change I was surprised by was at the end. Ang does not become the ocean spirit who destroys the fire nation ships. I liked the ending, but had definitely been looking forward to the Ocean spirit.
Overall I say, go and see this movie! Be open minded and just enjoy all the bending. Otherwise we'll never get to see the other 2 movies!!
