Hannibal (2013)
Intellectually captivating, aesthetically magnificent and fantastically performed
Hannibal is good. Where some writers and directors are trying to create something new, perhaps in hopes to attract attention and hype, Hannibal focuses on doing it well. Really well.
The attention to detail is insane yet veiled in such a way as not to distract and overwhelm you.
The masterfully designed mise en scene is often intimate, always elegant and uncomplicated and together these environments creates an atmosphere that feels almost spiritual, beautiful and eerie.
While the superficial craftsmanship is a constant presence it isn't consciously perceived as overly planned or pretentious.
Rather; the near perfect cinematography and settings effectively intensify the actors performance.
Hannibal is, contrary to what many presume and other adaptations, a very emotional, romantic and humanistic experience. The intense chemistry and presence challenged my presumptions and morally derived notions as to what to feel and expect, where no such doubt existed before.
Suddenly I find myself letting go of judgements and even questioned my values.
What first and foremost makes Hannibal great is how the characters come to life, grow into and out of relationships while they discover themselves and explore their humanity, vividly to the point of completely overtaking you and your ego is completely dissolved.
It's a romance, thriller, drama and mystery that never get's dull or predictable.
Watch it.
The Matrix (1999)
The movie that changed the future for Hollywood ever since the release of the perfect movie to celebrate a new millennia.
I am not a journalist, nor am I a payed critic. But it kind of feels like I should be because just like the Wachowski sisters I got it.
On release I was merely a teenager, ironically not completely unlike 'Neo' as I was subjected to the hype from other hackers online since I were a programmer and hacker, at least by night. Student by day although I can't say I didn't do some hacking in school from time to time!
I'm not talking as much about the character depth development and I'm not looking for hidden philosophies when I admire the perfection I experienced when I first watched this film. No.
What I perceived was a largely philosophical film (and due to the late Dr. Stephen Hawking*** more current than what's comfortable to admit!)
made in a new format.
Set in a future or past - void of themes associated with different decades - scientifically barely fiction as it relates to our day and age more than ever today.
Not even realism (usually important for a geek like I) was in doubt as this aesthetically, cinematographically* and technologically groundbreaking Platonistic masterpiece surpassed all expectations and turned into something above and beyond what is possible to dislike as it's more likely close to a life-changingly ecstasy and truly original. Most certainly capable of being inspiring, you want to watch it over and over again.
I think it helped a lot that I was a hardcore 'Ghost in the Shell' manga and movie fan although at the time completely unaware of the Wachowskis own fascination with Masamuni Shirorows universe and Ghost in the Shell.**
You have most likely seen it even if you havn't.
The style, atmosphere, cinematographic techniques and thoroughly thought trough yet somehow tastefully, sexy minimalism is present in almost all major films produced today.
To break it down in components:
- Aesthetics
- Camera work and post filming techniques
- The use of music that fits the atmosphere of the scene whether you like that particular music or not
- The digital "feel" that often isn't that digital and often is when you wouldn't believe it.
- The absurd level of detail and dedication put into every aspect of every part of the production. From props, dust, textiles and filter to the spotless chrome or endless seemingly roofless places.
- An innocent yet particular likeness to both the architecture, clothing, and so forth of the NSDAP (Hitler's party in Germany) and Hugo Boss timeless designs, then as now.
The list goes on but a lot of these points were unique to The Matrix and the original film that used them all together impacted the world.
Actor performance? Few actors have impressed an audience, colleges, directors and crew the way Keanu Reeves have.
I'm talking about Reeves amongst extremely well performed actors such as Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. Both in terms of thespians with an intensive presence and the art of mastering complicated choreography, partially thanks to the Martial Art Institute representatives such as the "kung fu team: Hong Kong" members: Yuen Eagle Shun Yi, Woo-Ping Yuen, Daxing Zhang. They did an extraordinarily good job on such a short notice and that's probably partially because of the actors dedication to aim for perfection.
I should know. I am a Wing Chun Kung Fu examined and graduated certified trainer and I bow in honor to the KFT:HK as I acknowledge their superiority in their ways as trainers, showing I have yet more to learn.
The Matrix, however that wasn't a unique occurans as you'll be able to assess if, and you should, watch this movie.
I wouldn't call it purely talent since talent alone isn't enough when you want to impress in a heavily invested and With this level of satisfaction, or if you subscribe to the possibility of perfection, the dedication Keanu his delivery and choreography
*Noun - cinematography (countable and uncountable, plural cinematographies) The art, process, or job of filming movies. Motion picture photography.
**Ghost in the Shell Please do not mistake the movie with the live action Hollywood movie produced in 2017, they are barely cousins and the plot is butchered beyond acceptable parameters
***Stephen Hawking, cosmologist, physicist and professor in mathematics at Cambridge, best-selling writer and physicist, more current than last year, since he predicted, postumely, that the development of A.I amongst threats such as man-made irreversible changes with catastrophic consequences to the environment to largely be about
Chloe (2009)
Overall a good movie for any thriller or drama fans!
At first I was worried that this movie would end up being the typical cheesy movie about betrayal and jealusy but after just a few minutes in to the movie I realised it was going to be much more.
The movie is about a woman that's convinced her husband is cheating on her, and in her pursuit of the truth she looks for alternatives way to find out if her husband, who is away on work for long periods of time, is capable of betraying her.
I won't go into more details on the story than this, and I don't think I need to. I will say this though; at times I thought I had it all figured out but I was wrong every time, and that's what made this thriller particularly interesting, as so many modern thrillers in this genre generally doesn'y deliver much excitement.
Very good acting, believable characters as well as an interesting development in the story. I really enjoyed this movie, and I think you will too. 8/10! .. and did I mention there is nudity? Enough said, watch this movie!
