Every cliche in the book
22 February 2004
This film just sponges off every rock cliche in the book, and tries to pass itself off as a work of fiction, as if the actual tales of self-indulgent druggies wasn't sickening enough, we are subjected to this...'piece.' Avoid at all costs.

Harrowing
24 July 2003
This is a truly harrowing drama. Set in the ultra conservative Ireland of the 60s, it portrays how Catholic women were punished because they became pregnant out of wedlock. The direction is among the best I have ever seen. Kudos. I have not yet seen the better-known "Magdalene Sisters," but I'm sure it will not disappoint.

I hated it then, I hate it still.

Only the effects redeem this film. From the ultra-quashy, and sickly love story, to the shameless stealing of countless scenes from the vastly superior British film, "A Night to Remember," this film is a disgrace. What was James Cameron thinking? Pish-posh... Perhaps if they re-released an edited version, with the love story cut out, and the stolen scenes removed, it could be a good film. For anyone who likes this film, I urge you to see "A Night to Remember." (1958) It's listed here on IMDb. Check it out.

Pure genius

If ever there was the perfect console game, it has to be Abe's Exodus. If ever there was the perfect movie-within-a-console-game, it has got to be Abe's Exodus. It is ingeniously original, the graphics are brilliant, and it is ludicrously funny. This could sit up among the best films shorts out there, and maybe even some of the best films out there.

the songs are too modern
4 July 2003
Crowe's love of grunge is apparent in the songs in this film. They are far too nineties. they sound more like Pearl Jam, or better-still, Creed. They do not sound like the workings of a seventies rock group. This however, is my only complaint, and I understand how it must be difficult to write songs for a seventies rock group, without actualy being a seventies rock group. 9/10

SPOILERS HEREIN
1 May 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This was a lot better than I expected, however there a few major flaws.

For example, Andertone was identified and located all over the city by his eyes, so he had them removed. Therefore, I think it is a flaw that he retained his eyes, and used them to gain access to the 'Temple.'

Also, but this is debatable, I don't believe that we would have totally abanodoned cars, and other forms of transports totally in fifty years.

9/10 My only quarrel...

This was a very intelligent thriller, with a worthy reason for the killers' actions. However, I tried as hard as I could to go in knowing as little about it as I possibly could, and all I knew was that it was about the Seven sins. Even still, I couldn't help but find myself one step ahead of the plot on many occasions. Perhaps I have seen too many of these sorts of films, but apart from that, more than decent.

Mapmaker (2001)

Starts light, but delves deeper and darker.
27 March 2003
This film starts quite light, I thought, in the same vein as the Field, with a southern mapmaker making a map in a rural border town, plagued with all the sours of N. Ireland, and exposing them comically. However, it soon gets very dark, focusing in on a young boy who is determined to find out why his father was really killed by the IRA.

There's not really much more to say about this film, without giving too much away. But a very fine premise, perhaps not fully fulfilling promise, but not very far off.

Genius
18 February 2003
The worst thing about this film is that is was probably the direct inspiration for all the big brother/ reality TV crap that saturates the TV listings these days. But still, it's now a satire. Immaculately directed, with an ingenius script, and Jim Carrey doesn't become annoying after watching it a second time.
