Manifest (2018)
Started out as guilty pleasure and only went downhill from there.
Let's get one thing straight - this show was never good quality wise, it was never even decent to begin with. First time time I tried I could barely go through first episode as apart from mystery plot everything was bad - acting is terrible, especially from the leads (with some exceptions, like Sanvi) - I mean the guy who plays Ben has one facial expression no matter what he does or says. And don't get me started with how annoying and dumb most of the characters are, again especially highlighting Ben.
Second time I was somehow bit more invested an due to somehow decent mystery plot line (at the beginning as it went quite ridiculous and religious / mythological as series progressed) did watch the series through. That being said, every season got significantly worse with exception of Season 4A, which arguably was the best part of the show, unfortunately, followed by Season 4B, which was the worst part of the show. Last 3 episodes filled with hundreds of group hugs, cliched and repetitive dialogs followed by the same old stiff acting done by annoying characters. I don't think I enjoyed or liked even one character through the series, though I guess Sanvi was least annoying and for the most part even fine.
I'm mostly glad that this is over and that it ended on it's own terms (even if those were horrible) and would never watch it again. Comparing this to Lost, Leftovers, Fringe or other quality mystery shows is just disrespectful and ridiculous. Manifest is like cheap Latin American soap opera with religious mystery subplot with no logical explanations, just a happy fairy tale ridiculous ending. Pretty much, avoid if you are not fan of the above.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
I have no idea where all the hates come from
Solid ending that actually makes this sequel worthwhile. I don't know what did haters expect to happen? Another mirracolus escape so we would get another sequel in 10 years? This was the only way how Dexter could end, I was always sure if they ever make sequel Dexter will die here since it should have happened at the end of original series.
Whole sequel was quite flawed, but fun to watch, I would say quality wise it was up there with last seasons of original series and way below season 1-4. For me actaully its the ending that saved New Blood, yeah it was bit too dramatic, I would prefer Dexter geting life sentence or getting killed by Angela better, but it was solid and logic ending unlike original's.
Old (2021)
Most people are right - great concept, terrible, terrible execution.
Well, nothing new to say, I just hope somebody will borrow concept of this film and make an great film instead of this disappointment.
Everything about this film was either really off or just weird. What surprises me the most is that film was directed by experienced Shyamalan, I would have guessed that it as directed by first time movie maker with decent idea but lacking budget and experience.
There are 3 majors downsides for this movie that absolutely ruin it:
1. Actors / actor play - I would really have to think to name another movie with as bad acting as in this film. Everything they said, did looked so amateurish and just weird and played out. I even felt awkward because of the actors.
2. Shallow, uninteresting characters for whom you couldn't care any less.
3. Storytelling and ending itself.
Shameless: Father Frank, Full of Grace (2021)
While could have been way better, definetly nowhere near as terrible as some reviews might make you think.
After watching some horrible series finales this year (most notably, The 100) and seeing reviews for this one I was prepared for the worst, but this was an okay or even good (not terrible or excellent) finale.
Yeah, it was petty much open ended and some of the season finales (for example, the one with Monica dying) would have worked as better series finale as this one, but for me it still was fitting ending.
The biggest downside - no Fiona (I was hoping to see not only Fiona, but Steve as well as they played big role in first couple of seasons) and this one is kind of hard to forgive. Yeah, I know, Covid and all stopped Emmy from getting to set, but still - they could have delayed filming for that, it would have been worth it. What's even more sad - Frank did not even mentioned her in his farewell speech, at least there were those flashbacks.
Anyhow - fitting ending for most of the characters, pretty open-ended, could have been way batter though.
