Ghostbusters (2016)
What a bore
Wow, how does something this unfunny and tedious get made? How does something this unfunny get made? Seriously, forget about laughing - I can't even say that I smiled at all. Just nothing that broke even that thin ice. Sad because there was some talent both in front of the camera and behind.
I mean, didn't even one person look at this at any time and say yep, this is pretty awful. So let's make sure we crank up the uninspired desultory special effects and CGI?
Miss it if you can.
My Country No More (2018)
Propaganda
Really, it's just more drivel with an agenda. It is focused on pushing a point of view and not a measured, rational, considered analysis.
Any time someone is going for the heartstrings you should become leery; they aren't presenting an argument, they are trying to emotionally manipulate you, and that's what they do here.
Unless you really need something to get you pointlessly worked up just give it a pass.
The Rider (2017)
A universe far from our own.
I grew up around these exact people 40 years ago and about a thousand miles south. I have never seen a movie that comes as close and real for life in the Great Plains as this. We used to say that hiding in the Midwest was the real west, and this movie pretty well nails it. Just like music and sports provide an escape from the inner city, rodeo and country western music is where many a great hope lies. Thanks to the writer and director for the way they handled this. Sick of seeing these folks being mocked, insulted, and condescended to. The only thing missing were the drive through urbanites that looked at you like some kind of exhibit from some zoo. Great film.
Invasion, U.S.A. (1952)
Aa Window to a different world
This is an amazing view into a different time altogether. There were still discussions after WWII about keeping the economy on a total war footing because of the Cold War, and this movie pushed that agenda.
The characters are all patrons at a N.Y. bar when all the bad news starts flying. An actual invasion by an enemy that remained nameless through the entire picture.
Cheesy news clips, paranoid acting, and action shots that were about 90% American stock footage - the enemy apparently had more American military assets then they did their own stuff - just a classic scare movie
Jack Ryan (2018)
Virtue Signaling Dreck
I have never written a review before but was so frustrated with the show I felt I just had to. I don't mind, too much, the trend of making essentially everything politically correct but when it interferes with the story to the point of distraction or even ridiculousness I felt I really had to.
The characters are so far away from anything in the books they don't even rise to being a vague point of reference. I believe that they shanghaied the title just to give cover their very specific and entrenched world view. And the story? There are enough holes in the plot to qualify as swiss cheese. And the characters are so straight jacketed to "perpetually morally superior " type that you don't even have to watch the show; it's been done multiple times nightly for the last two decades.
Take a pass as there is nothing new or memorable about it.
