Gravity (2013)
Awful for people who don't like movies that cause nausea
Remember how you felt a bit sick after Blair Witch? Two of the 4 of us in my party were sick after the first 15 minutes. So much spinning and twisting, spinning and twisting. This was a disappointing Bullock flick. Her dialogue was inane and trite. Clooney was OK, also trite, but a bit funny too. The CGI was well done, borrowed from the Hubble documentary. It was very frustrating to see Bullock appear so unqualified, how did she get on this mission? Other questions came to mind: what does NASA do to prepare mission participants for the problems that may occur?Does it send them there when they admittedly fail the practice tests? Do crew members have no idea who their ship mates are and have no knowledge of their personal lives? When I wasn't sick from the constant spinning I was waiting and waiting for Bullock to make it to another station ...in slow motion.Thank goodness Clooney told Bullock she had something to live for, so she could finally show some spine and stop whining. We waited for the plot to begin, and then it was over..we looked at each other and said "That was it???" We thought Melissa McCarthy should show up ,that might have helped.
Admission (2013)
It was fair..not as amusing as I wished for..
I had hoped Admission would be a bit funnier. I recently saw We're The Millers and thought that was a better movie..augh! I can't believe I even said that, because the premise of this movie is far more believable. However, everything in Admission seemed a tad " over the top:" Suzanne ( with her Bella Abzug tattoo) was too feminist and unlovable, the high school was too 'let's show how different we are,' Portia too naive in believing the adoption story, John was too anti- establishment, the gags were too easy to spot( she really wrecked her car right in front of her ex-lovers wedding?). The saviors of the movie were Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, who are delightful actors and easy to connect with whether in TV or movies. I saw several places the writers could ( and should) have done something different to make this a bit less predictable. It wasn't terrible, but not better than a 6..it was exactly what a movie is that you save to rent and not spend the money to see in the theaters.
We're the Millers (2013)
Go, it is funnier than you think!
We went not expecting an intelligent comedy, and it wasn't, but it WAS funny! It was laugh out loud funny. I would recommend it over The Heat, which felt like they forced the laughs. In this movie, the situation is of course bizarre, and the whole premise was dumb, but who cares if it makes you laugh?! They really cast the whole family well, especially Kenny, who does a great job as the virgin dork. I never thought I would see a movie where Jennifer Aniston looked just right as a 40 something mother, but she does in the film. Ed Helms was probably the only one who looked out of sorts in the movie, that was a bit too much of " Hey let's place a really unlikely guy in this part"...We were really worried how they would have them end up together as a family without making it sappy, but it was handled pretty well. And if you go, stay for the outtakes, especially the very last one when the family serenades one of the cast members, that was fun.
Lincoln (2012)
Fantastic
This is an excellent movie. The 'nay sayers' that have assigned low scores have stupidly created names that show they are fake.. really?..a Mr Baggypants? what an unoriginal name! This IMDb score of 8.5 would really be higher if the fake reviewers will just stay away. This movie is great and even though I am a teacher and scholar of American History, I found this to be accurate and moving. Daniel Day Lewis gives a very intelligent, powerful performance. Everyone should see this for several reasons..1) to see a great movie 2) to learn more of American History 3) to be able to have a standard for future movies so you can compare what a good one is to a terrible movie. This is worth, worth, worth it. GO
Looper (2012)
Get the word correct- it is Reignmaker!
I thought the movie was fine. I thought it borrowed often from several other movies, and at the end reminded me of The Butterfly Effect. My sticking point-Remember when Bruce Willis says Reignmaker because "he" has created a REIGN of terror? Why then is everyone referring to a Rainmaker? Almost everyone over the age of 12 will like this movie. I said almost everyone, because of course some will not. But if you want to watch a half decent movie with okay acting and a story line that seems familiar but has been changed and tweaked, then see this movie. You will not feel as though you wasted your money, you can see it with your 16 yr old son when you need a parent-older teen night out, and it is OK for date night too. There are enough special effects for those movie goers, and a bit of romance for women, and seeing what our world could be in 2044 is actually the best part.
Sex and the City 2 (2010)
Great Fun for Fans!!
If you don't like or appreciate the series or SITC 1, then don't see the movie. BUT if you are a fan, you will laugh for 2 hours. Seriously!! So some of the outfits are over the top?! Did you notice they have always been that way? The acting is fine, the story lines ARE present and continue the lives of the characters. It was a nice change to see Charlotte freak out on her kids, Miranda decide not to be wound so tightly, and Carrie work on marriage with John. Some of the lines were corny, some of the Samantha antics were inappropriate, some of the circumstances were far fetched, but you get exactly what you go to this movie to see,and if you wanted more then shame on you.
The Proposal (2009)
Pretty good for Bullock Fans
Although much of this romantic comedy may appear ' standard formula' for this genre, this is still a delightful movie. Many of the people in our audience laughed heartily at the comedic scenes we knew were forced on us, yet we enjoyed them anyway.(spoiler) .. You do expect them to get together, and you know they will, but it is still fun seeing how Bullock's character thaws out and accepts love. Both Reynolds and Bullock develop their characters with ease, and the supporting cast does pretty well with what they are given. Craig T Nelson's role as his disappointed father was probably the most annoying, and didn't add much to the movie. A few scenes were improbable, such as the dancing in the woods with Betty White. Fans of The Office will be delighted with "Oscar", those who don't watch this sit com won't appreciate why it is as funny. Men will be OK at this film, so don't worry about dragging a date along with you.
