Swing Time (1936)
The plots CAN matter
Actually, if you read the book, 'Astaire and Rogers', by Edward Gallafent, there is a very interesting exploration of the shape of the cycle of RKO films, including the plots. So, while the dances are superlative, they are not the be all and end all... a lot of people miss that, I think.
(SPOILER-ish) For instance, to paraphrase Gallafent, Swing Time manages to incorporate the formats of the five previous films in what appears as a comment on the structure of the series so far, and, by way of George Stevens's emphasis on Ginger, looks towards the potential (and actual) loss of her from the partnership. It makes for a nice turning point in the series. And it is, perhaps, my personal favourite of the romances.
When Boys Fly (2002)
buy it!!
This is a great film! Well shot, excellently edited. Very interesting, sad as well as entertaining. I found it very informative and had a great time watching it. The film makers are all great guys too! So, buy it, book yourself a Friday night in, and watch other people get trashed for a change, in an intellectual manner, of course...
