Inside 'The Green Zone' (2010)
Stomach-churning camera movement does not equal suspense
Matt Damon is one of the finest actors of his generation. Unfortunately, in this film, he is once again paired with a director who follows the television commercial fad of herky-jerky camera movements, with constant zooming in-and-out, panning right-and-left, all at light-speed, and all of it meant to imply suspense or drama or "documentary", when in fact all it reveals is a director who is forced to rely on trickery and nausea-inducing camera motion to compensate for poor material. Matt, please pick a better script, and choose a director who is self-confident enough to stabilize the camera on a tripod so that we aren't taken on yet another corkscrew roller-coaster "action" movie.
The American (2010)
Intelligent and subtle
George Clooney has a gift for choosing unusual, thought-provoking films, and "The American" is no different. Though he stars in this film, Clooney is also listed as a "Producer", and the material certainly justifies his confidence. If you seek countless thunderball explosions, mindless car-chases, and cartoon dialog, THIS FILM IS NOT FOR YOU. However, if you revel in thoughtful, extraordinarily subtle, carefully-crafted films, with deep souls and characters who speak and move like real human beings, then see this movie. The arch of an eyebrow, a long, sad glance, the slightest parting of lips, the aching of a lonely man, the depth of meaning behind seemingly everyday conversations, it's all explored here.
