The first Jack in the Box movie was charming in a low-budget way. And the premise of the demon in a box is something that easily moves between movies without a need for consistency of cast.
This movie appears to have a better budget. Sets are better, the cast is still limited, but it doesn't feel as conspicuous. The acting is still campy, but who watches these movies for art?
Anyway, where this movie takes a big step forward is by creating a clear rule / benefit to the existence of the Jack in the Box.
Opening the box for Jack grants the user a wish (nonsensically indicated by 4 letters on the top of the box). In order for the wish to be fulfilled, Jack has to claim 6 victims. Each one increments a counter on the box.
A rule creates a hook for the character. The downside is that now we're left to wonder why he killed six in the first movie. I'm assuming that the counter, once it reaches six, re-locks the box.
If you enjoyed the first one, this is a bit more pleasing, but you also know what you're in for. Cheap, but watchable horror fluff.
