Our Flag Means Death: Fun and Games (2023)
Relationships are messy and that's what makes them real
Fun and Games is my favorite episode of the second season. In true OFMD fashion, it offers entertainment and funny moments, but also touching conversations and symbolic events that give these characters and their journeys so much depth.
This is, I think, one of the only episodes where Ed and Stede truly sit down and talk about their relationship and it also goes to show how well their dynamic works when they just "talk it through"! That scene at Anne and Mary's house is a moment where Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi's acting skills and on-screen (as well as off-screen) chemistry work their wonders, and it's easy to forget these are actually fictional characters that we're watching, because their conversation feels so real.
Rachel House and Minnie Driver's performances are also a delight!
Our Flag Means Death: Mermen (2023)
Beautiful finale
There are so many scenes in this episode that feel like something out of romance novels, and that's absolutely great. We've seen countless romances like these for straight characters, but so rarely for queer characters. What a gift this show is to the universe! The earnest way it tells the story of love is almost too much to bear.
The only complaint here really is that they didn't have enough time and resources to tell the story with all the details it would've required or deserved, but that is no fault of David Jenkins nor any of the other creators. They did the absolute best they could with what they were given, and even though this episode has some jagged edges, I find it very comforting that the season does not end in any big cliffhanger.
Despite the finale feeling very... well, final, we all know Ed and Stede's story was never about the "happily ever after". So despite the season ending on a somewhat joyous note that could potentially serve as the ending of the series, it still makes you ask: "But what happens next in their relationship? Where does the crew of The Revenge end up?"
I am very much hoping for a third season, so we can see these characters grow and go on more adventures to discover themselves. Their story is not yet told in full. It's barely begun!
Our Flag Means Death: A Damned Man (2022)
The crew makes the most of their vacation
A Damned Man is definitely one of the funniest episodes of the first season! The writing of this episode is just spot on and there are so many delightful lines said by so many different characters. The contrast between the crew of The Revenge and the "real pirates" they meet on the island is quite entertaining and makes you realize just how incompetent Stede Bonnet is as a pirate captain.
This episode gives us more scenes with many members of the crew, which helps establish them as characters, while the bigger plot is still developing in the background. A Damned Man also introduces Con O'Neill as Izzy Hands, and he immediately brings a somewhat darker tone to the series with his phenomenal acting.
Our Flag Means Death: Pilot (2022)
Just a glimpse into the potential of this show
If you are considering whether to keep watching or ditch the show after this episode, I'd say watch the first four episodes before deciding whether it's your thing or not. The show's main plot starts surprisingly slowly considering it's otherwise quite fast-paced.
The pilot gives us an introduction to the dysfunctional crew of The Revenge. Rhys Darby and Rory Kinnear truly shine in their roles! This episode's humor isn't the type that will have you rolling on the floor laughing, but rather a more nuanced kind of humor that warms your heart and makes you forget about real life for a moment.
I think what is important to acknowledge as well is that the characters, as we meet them in the pilot, are not set in their ways. This is just the beginning for them, and if you find yourself annoyed by some of them in the pilot, you might just end up loving them later on in the show as they grow!
Our Flag Means Death (2022)
Best show I've ever watched
I am absolutely amazed by this show about dysfunctional queer pirates. Somehow it manages to be extremely funny and light, while also dealing with themes of trauma, love, and growth as a person. The LGBTIQA+ and POC presentation are an integral part of the show, and after watching Our Flag Means Death, the bar is set quite high for the queer shows to come.
There is not a single episode that I dislike in this show. They are all worth watching and rewatching. With the very limited runtime to move the plot and the characters forward in each episode, the creators of the show have really made every minute and second count!
Often a show with an ensemble cast leaves you feeling like you don't really know most of the characters, and you'd definitely expect this from this 30-minutes-or-less show as well... But in Our Flag Means Death, the different personalities are actually clear as day. Every character is an individual with their own quirks and it's a joy to watch all their adventures and growth. Of course, there are a few characters who get more screentime than others, but even those with a very limited number of scenes are fleshed out well.
My only complaint is that there is not more of this show to watch! Especially season two could've easily been 45 minutes per episode, to allow some room to breathe between intense scenes. One can only hope that the show will be renewed for the third and final season, as it would be a shame to miss out on everything David Jenkins has planned for these pirates!
