Goldfinger (1964)
I did it again...
18 November 2011
Yes, I had promised myself not to watch old movies expecting the kind of high tech action of today. Although I was born in the 60s, I had never seen this movie before. So here I am, watching the movie and trying not to be prejudiced. I briefly enjoyed the Aston Martin, which I had as a toy car back then from Corgi Toys. Other than that, I had to smile at the name Pussy Galore, which of course reminded me of Austin Power's Alotta. I wish I had seen this movie decades ago. Watching it now would've brought back nostalgia. I would in that case give it an 8 or 9 probably. Alas, I only watched the movie now, so, it gets a 5. A piece of advice, if you watch old movies you have already seen when they came out, you will definitely enjoy the feelings of excitement you had back then. However watching on old movie for the first time, even if it's THE action movie of its days, it will look lame in comparison to today's standards. Rare are the movies that are timeless!

Big names sell well !
2 November 2011
Here's the recipe: take a good dose of National Geographic clips, mix them well with Kubrik-style surrealist ideas, throw in 2 big names and voilà... the ratings hit the roof! Why? I honestly don't see why the ratings for this boring symbolist movie are so high. What have I missed? I sat through the entire thing... yet ended up with such emptiness. When I say whether I liked or disliked a movie, it all comes down to one thing, namely, would I watch it again? And here I would like to ask people who gave it a high rating: would you watch it again? Would you go through that boring stuff all over again? I didn't think so, therefore always ask yourself whether you would watch a movie a second time because you enjoyed it so much the first time... then only give the rating. This said, it's so unfortunate that two of my favorite actors get such a low rating from me. Better luck next time.

True to reality?
29 October 2010
Having watched this movie and being interested lately in the world wars, specially world war two, I don't believe this to be a true or accurate historical account. It is more like a dramatized summery or caricature of how Hitler shaped his way to power. We see him as a young (20 or so years)person who fails to make it to the academy of arts (which according to historical accounts is true). He is portrayed as having unshakable self confidence and talks of his future glory (as artist or architect) even after his failure. Persons like that do have influence on others. If you believe in yourself, people will believe in you. Do not watch this movie if you're looking for historical accuracy. On the other hand, I was quite impressed by the fine acting of the leading characters. Schilling gives a nice performance as young Hitler. This being the main reason for giving the movie rating a 6.

Salt (2010)

Nikita?
26 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Salt reminds me of Nikita... anyone thinks she does? I enjoyed the movie, the action and the fact that love conquers all. The very reason Salt switched sides. Great acting as usual by Angelina and Liev. The rest of the cast is also very good. The stunts are well performed and keep you on the edge, although I thought Angelina was not convincing enough as a tough girl during the chase scenes with the motorbike and the ones with the high jumps on top of the trucks. As for the plot, similar stories have been around for a long time. Yet, it's always interesting to get that extra surprise and twist at the end of the movie. A sequel is definitely possible... Go see it if you haven't already, but stay focused, one might get confused at times.
