Varshangalkku Shesham (2024)
Very Good
This is a really good movie that is not perfect. This movie is for the family with the heartwarming friendship between the characters of murali and venu. The depiction of 70's chennai is done extremely well. Malayalam movies this year have really excelled in set design. I thought pranav's performance was just average and tried to copy mohanlal like crazy but dhyan's performance is incredible. There is one scene where he just completely becomes the character. The makeup is also really good especially for dhyan. There are also many actors in this movie all of which are used fairly well. Basil's and Aju's performances are also good. Nivin is really funny but he also just becomes so weirdly ridiculous sometimes, which doesn't fit the tone of the movie. The sorry and screenplay is pretty average. This wont wow anyone but it will make everyone happy.
Yoddha (1992)
Most technically sound malayalam film for its time
I dont have to talk about the amazing cinematography by Santhosh Sivan and A..R. Rahman's incredible music. But the most impressive thing is that this film never loses the malaylee flavor in all this. It has everything, great action, brilliant comedy by jagathy, and great locations. And the story itself is probably the most unique story in malayalam. And mohanlal and his love for the rimpoche is so heart warming and so well acted. This is when mohanlal used to put his heart in every role. Nothing negative to say about this movie really. Just a world class film. I think it is better than Kaalapaani personally if you really want to jump in to classic malayalam. I dont know where to find subtitles though.
Sandesham (1991)
Masterpiece
This movie is infinitely rewatchable. Everything, from Thilakan's performance, the comedy, and Sreenivasan's script is perfect. The best thing about this movie is how well it holds up. The satire and commentary on our society is still very relevant. And so is how politics is something foolish and every politician only cares about themselves. The performances are all great but thilakan and oduvil unnikrishnan completely sweep the floor with their acting and chemistry as longtime friends. And lines like "nariel ka paani" and "polandine patti oru aksharam mindalle" will be remembered forever. The film doesnt go over its runtime and the pacing is still somehow perfect. In short, this is the perfect satire.

Will never forget
I have watched this movie once. I have watched movies like 3 idiots more than 30 times but for some reason, I never came back to this movie. However the message of this movie will forever stick with me. The point in a competition is to not win, but to try your best and come out learning something new. This was what surprised me when I first watched. Usually a result like this wouldn't be celebrated because of our highly competitive society. But this movie ends with them showing how they became better people by giving their all and still losing. It is so beautifully conveyed in movie. The other thing I remember is the great comedy. Never goes too over the top but still makes you laugh every time. I also remember the amazing performances and music. If a movie I had watched this long ago still sticks out to me this well, I cant help but give it 10/10. Sushant left our world too quickly😢😢😢😢
Garudan (2023)
Good Thriller
The film is good. No big flaws to speak of. Adipoli performance from Biju Menon. But Suresh Gopi's dialogue delivery is not as realistic as it needed to be. I was reminded of his roles from commisioner but this didn't match the seriousness of the movie. Every other performance is okay. The biggest problem is its pacing in the second half and the overuse of english. I dont have a problem with english in a malayalam movie but I felt like it ruined the impact sometimes. The film is engaging though so I would say its worth a watch. The film is also well directed without any major editing mistakes.
The Sting (1973)
Has the one of the most satisfying endings
When I was watching the movie, I thought it was just average, probably didn't deserve Best Picture. But the ending is brilliant and still makes you go "ohhhh!" It completely resolves all the side stories in the film in a very satisfying way. The set design is still brilliant and completely immerses you in the setting. The 30's music is still stuck in my head. The performances are brilliant. And the story has very little plot holes. As someone who doesn't know much about poker and horse races, this film is still quite accessible. I think this is a near perfect caper film, with nothing bad about it. I got to give this 10/10. Definitely deserved Best Picture.
