Around the Horn (2002)
Great, fast-paced and tremendously funny!
This show is probably the best sports show on television. When you get tired of the repetitive Linda Cohn or John Andersen commentary on SportsCenter, or you don't like all of the shouting involved with "Pardon the Interruption," you may want to give this show a shot.
Woody Paige is very funny and has some great banter with Jay Mariotti, Michael Smith, Tim Cowlishaw, and the like. The guys who return day after day are some of the best debaters on television and are very amusing. Even the ones, like Bob Ryan or J.A. Adande, who pop up every once in a while are amusing. The obscure ones like Adam Schefter or Mark Kiszla are not that entertaining, but thankfully, they rarely come up.
Max Keller was borderline annoying, but he is no longer on the show. Although I miss the "Disembodied Voice," the Tony Reali era is more entertaining than the previous one. All in all, this is a very entertaining show. It can hold my attention better than "PTI" because of the scoring, and it is less repetitive than the same old commentary on SportsCenter's top plays. This show is so fast-paced and interesting that, once you become a fan, you find it irresistibly funny and hard to turn away.
Complete Savages (2004)
Worst show in TGIF history
This show centers around the stereotypical male-clustered and single-parented (as all sitcoms are) Savage family. The kids are annoying, kind of like sores on the inside of your mouth, you feel it with your tongue to see if it still hurts.
Mel Gibson really dropped the ball on this one. He is a creator and producer, and also a human being who makes mistakes... which is obvious by this annoying show.
Now let's go to the TGIF history books... Boy Meets World, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, You Wish, Family Matters... this show is not the family show that it disguises itself as. It has no place in TGIF, past, present, or future.
Gigli (2003)
Deserves every bad review it got...
This movie deserved every last bad review it got. Almost every critic and forum show, from "Entertainment Tonight" to "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," agree that this movie was an upset. Not only the critics disapproved of this movie, though. Even the viewing public came back frustrated. (That's why that, as of mid-August 2003, this movie was #1 on the IMDb.com bottom 100 list.)
"Gigli" gives Jennifer Lopez more incentive to focus mainly on her singing career. Sure, "Maid in Manhattan" had success, but this Jennifer Lopez movie did not, and J.Lo could be to blame. Diversity is clearly not one of her strong suits.
Ben Affleck was the headliner of this movie. He has talent, sure, but he really should stick to drama (i.e. "The Sum of All Fears"). The comedy in this movie, as bleak as it is, is only impaired by Affleck's poor delivery.
The plot of this movie, as well as most of the writing, was unoriginal and uninspired, proving once and again that this movie was just crying out for the bad reviews it received.
On the Spot (2003)
Hilarious!
This new television show, brought to you each week by The WB, is simply amazing. It features many guest stars, in addition to the charismatic Tim Conway from the Carol Burnett Show. Also in such a cast are Jeff B. Davis and Chip Esten, who many people may recognize from "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"
The premise of the show is incredible, which may refer back to the live Drew Carey Show episodes. The concept is like this: The cast is put on stage with half of a script, leaving room for clever ad-libs and any other games that the host, Chip Esten, may throw their direction. Also, there is a bell that is sounded off at rather random times, suggesting to the actor that said the last line to create a brand new like... You guessed it, right there, "on the spot."
Even the atmosphere of the Sunspot Hotel (the fictional hotel where the show takes place) is incredible, with the open-ended booths, lots of comfortable seating for spectators, and a tropic-style motif. It is unlike any other show I have seen, mainly because of the clever improvisational moments blended in with a sitcom script. Genius AND hilarious.
Sabrina: The Animated Series (1999)
Could it get worse?
I strongly disliked this cartoon. I would see it once or twice in the mornings, where I caught tons of errors between the cartoon and the base movie and television series. The animation is smooth, but the plot is much worse than the weekly show's. It was almost as bad as its build-up made it seem. Basically, this is not recommended, and in many fortunate places, is no longer aired.
Shrek (2001)
Tremendous!
Shrek was a marvelous delight for anybody to have the privilege to see it. The movie was ideal in length and was a perfect spoof on several fairytales. From the creators of Antz, this movie brought smooth, computer-rendered animation onto the big screen, and definitely deserved the Academy Award it won.
With an all-star cast of voicists (Mike Myers, John Lithgow, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz), this movie easily shows the years of work they put into it. I loved this movie as a film and as a DVD, and I recommend it strongly, if anybody had not seen it already. It is clear and original, although taking much of a plot from other fairytales. I would look for an upcoming Shrek 2 to be nothing less than dazzling.
