Rimembeo (2022)
If you don't like this movie you are a fascist
Despite being funded by the Italian Mafia Remember was an extremely good movie. I loved the revenge fantasy against Japanese Fascists, the social commentary of the need to eliminated this historical power the Japanese gained from the horrors of WWII is refreshing and well needed.
The two characters in this film are sympathetic and well written, there is a real sense of threat and peril to their noble cause and I feel the character type of someone dragged into a situation creates a great dynamic between the two.
I think that the tension and escalation of the plot was well executed and not too unrealistic, the 80 year old assassin sin and the challenges it creates was comical but also tragic, that will be me one day. Not the dementia part, the killing fascists part.
Because I love movies where they kill fascists and I myself am not a fascist and can appreciate good cinema I give this one a 10/10, or for those who use the metric system a 19/19.
Kurenai no buta (1992)
the weebs could really benefit from an anti-fascist film
Despite being funded by the Italian Mafia Porco Rosso is a beautiful and surprisingly melancholic animated picture. The decision to make Porco a pig was unexpected but ultimately appreciated, Studio Ghibli's art style and use of colour perfectly encapsulated Italian geography and European architecture but still through the generous lens of a Japanese perspective of Europe. The message of the film, that being anti-war and anti-fascist is well appreciated and very well done, it is an emotional and heart warming film despite these heavy topics. This is because Porco Rosso balances the grief of a traumatised soldier and a growingly oppressive fascist regime with the naive joy of a regular studio Ghibli film.
I was surprised prised to find a Japanese film with an anti-fascist agenda but I wonder if the movie would have been made if it was tackling Japan's own fascism?
This is my personal favourite animated film, anyone can enjoy and learn something from Porco Rosso and anyone would be a fool not to watch it. I cannot give it any higher than a 10/10, mostly because that is the limit on this site. Or for my metric unit fans out there 19/19.
Big Night (1996)
big movie
Despite being funded by the Italian Mafia the Big Night was a wonderful movie throughout it's entire 1h 56 min runtime all the way from it's birth to death in 1987. The Italians are the stars of the show here, mostly because it's a movie about Italian people. I found the story and main characters to be very touching and it almost made me cry but I didn't want to ruin the mood because I watched it with a woman I've been cheating on my boyfriend with, I had just eaten her out during the film and was hoping for action after and I felt crying would ruin the mood, the story of two brothers has been played out many times, like in the hit movie twins, but the Italian twist kept it fresh and an enjoyable experience.
The big night subdued my lust and captured my attention for it's entire run time and it is only failed by the fact the movie was not actually directed by an Italian person and is therefore cultural appropriation, I cannot in good faith rate it anything higher than a 9/10, or a 17/19 for those who use the metric system.
