The Climb (I) (2017)
9/10
A true story about the power of believing in yourself - with a lot of heart and humor
14 September 2024
The story follows Samy (played by Ahmed Sylla), a young man from the suburbs of Paris who grew up in a socially disadvantaged environment. When he learns about the impressive ascents of Mount Everest, he decides to impress his girlfriend Nora (played by Alice Belaïdi) by preparing for an expedition to the world's highest peak. This decision becomes a turning point in his life as it challenges him not only physically but also emotionally.

The film shows Samy's journey as he deals with the physical and psychological challenge of mountaineering. The various stages of his preparation - from training to the difficulties he encounters on the way to the summit - are portrayed impressively and with a healthy dose of humor. Samy is supported by a colorful cast of characters who help him overcome his fears and believe in himself.

"The Ascent" deals with central themes such as believing in yourself, overcoming obstacles and the power of love. The film shows that it's not just about achieving goals, but also about the journey to get there. Samy's journey to the summit of Everest becomes a metaphor for the challenges that life brings and the need to believe in yourself and never give up.

The message that everyone, regardless of their background, has the power to realize their dreams runs through the entire plot. "The Rise" encourages viewers to overcome their own fears and fight for their goals.

Ahmed Sylla brings his character "Samy" to life with a mixture of charm and vulnerability. His portrayal of unshakeable belief in himself, coupled with the insecurity that often plagues him, makes him an extremely likeable and authentic protagonist. Sylla manages to maintain a balance between humor and serious moments, which lends the film a refreshing lightness. Alice Belaïdi as Nora complements Sylla perfectly. Her portrayal of a supportive but also demanding partner is believable and touching. The supporting characters, including the experienced mountaineers who support Samy on his journey, add extra dimensions to the story. Their different personalities and backgrounds show that climbing a mountain is not only a physical challenge, but also a journey of self-discovery and growth. The footage is not only visually appealing, but also conveys the sense of isolation and challenges that mountaineering brings. The musical score supports the emotional intensity of the movie and enhances the dramatic climaxes.

------ Conclusion:

Excellent - With its perfect blend of humor, heart and a strong message about believing in yourself, "The Climb" is a film that not only entertains, but also deeply touches and motivates. This is a recommended movie for anyone who believes in the power of dreams.

Marshland (2014)
5/10
overrated - Atmospheric thriller that at times only scratches the surface and leaves some questions unanswered
8 September 2024
"La isla mínima - Murderland" is a Spanish crime thriller set in the rural expanses of Andalusia in the 1980s. The story follows two policemen, Pedro and Juan, who are sent to a remote village to investigate the murder of two young women. As they try to solve the case, they are confronted with the prejudices and mysterious atmosphere of the rural community. Certain similarities with the first season of "True Detective" are noticeable, as here too two moustachioed policemen investigate a series of murders of girls in the marshlands. The pace of the story is also similar.

The movie's plot certainly has potential and offers some exciting moments. The investigation is well structured and contains several twists and turns that keep the viewer interested. The setting and the look of the 80s are authentic and well shot. The landscapes of Andalusia are also often captured impressively with drone shots, which gives the film a certain visual appeal.

The acting performances by Raúl Arévalo and Javier Gutiérrez as the two detectives are solid. Their chemistry is palpable and they bring different perspectives to the investigation. However, the character development remains somewhat shallow; you don't learn enough about their backgrounds or motivations to build a deeper emotional connection with them.

Despite the beautiful visual design that perfectly captures the local flair and the potentially exciting plot, the movie falls short of expectations in many aspects.

The plot is partly predictable and conventional. It is a clear and straightforward crime story, without frills, but also without any big twists or surprises at any point. The supporting characters are also somewhat one-dimensional and don't contribute much to the overall story. As a result, the movie sometimes remains stuck in clichés that can be found in many crime movies. Another point of criticism is the narrative style, which occasionally feels a little sluggish. Some scenes drag on unnecessarily, which dampens the tension.

Topics such as corruption and abuse of power are addressed, but the examination of them remains superficial. The movie scratches the surface of social issues (e.g. Social change: the context of the post-Franco era is used to portray the tensions and changes in society) without really delving into them, which is a missed opportunity to offer deeper insights.

There are also some disturbing unanswered questions that remain at the end of the movie. These unresolved elements leave a feeling of incompleteness. A shame, as the movie is technically competently made.

-------------- Conclusion:

Fair enough - Overall, "La isla mínima - Murderland" is an appealing, but not outstanding movie. It offers some exciting moments and visual impressions, but falls short of expectations in terms of character development and thematic depth. A movie that probably won't be remembered for long.

Moneyball (2011)
8/10
Inspiring story about courage, innovation and the importance of teamwork
7 September 2024
"Moneyball" is based on a true story and introduces us to the world of baseball. With an intelligent script and outstanding acting, the movie succeeds in inspiring not only sports lovers, but also those interested in strategic decisions and overcoming obstacles.

The movie tells the story of Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics, played by Brad Pitt. After his team suffers a series of talent losses, Beane decides to take a new approach to be competitive on a limited budget. This is where the concept of "Moneyball" comes into play - analyzing statistics and data analysis to identify undervalued players. The film shows how Beane goes against the conventional approach to baseball and decides to use statistics and data to identify the best players. This innovative approach leads to controversial discussions and challenges traditional notions of the sport. This exciting exploration of different ways of thinking makes the film extremely interesting and inspiring. A successful interplay between sport and strategy.

Brad Pitt delivers an excellent acting performance and impressively expresses the contradictions and emotions of the character. He embodies Billy Beane's determination and combative spirit in a way that draws the viewer in. The supporting actors, such as Jonah Hill as Peter Brand, Beane's analytical assistant, also contribute significantly to the success of the film.

The staging and direction by Bennett Miller should also be emphasized. With carefully chosen camera angles and restrained but effective staging, both the action on the pitch and the dialog scenes are impressively presented. The movie captivates the audience and lets them experience the passion and excitement of baseball up close.

-------------- Conclusion:

Excellent - "Moneyball" tells an inspiring story about courage, innovation and the importance of teamwork. A movie that goes far beyond sport.

Vikings (2013–2020)
10/10
Outstanding
3 September 2024
"Vikings" is an epic historical drama series created by Michael Hirst and first aired on History Channel in 2013. The series tells the gripping story of Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary Norse warrior and explorer who lived in the Viking Age. With a total of six seasons and 89 episodes, "Vikings" has not only captivated viewers but also won over critics.

The plot follows Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, who is driven by his urge to explore new lands and lead his family and tribe to fame and fortune. Travis Fimmel embodies Ragnar with an impressive intensity and magnetism. He expresses both the strength and vulnerability of his character and shows the inner conflicts of a man torn between tradition and innovation, between warrior spirit and family duty. His acting performance gives the character a deeper dimension that connects the audience emotionally with him.

Alongside Fimmel, Katheryn Winnick also stands out as Lagertha. She not only embodies the role of a strong warrior, but also the complex emotional challenges that come with her relationship with Ragnar. Winnick brings a remarkable strength and vulnerability to the role, making Lagertha one of the most inspiring characters in the series. Her ability to act as a fighter as well as a mother and wife shows the facets of her character development and makes her one of the most outstanding female characters in the genre. Another notable actor is Gustaf Skarsgård, who plays the charismatic and often mysterious Floki. Skarsgård brings an intriguing mix of humor, madness and depth to the role, making Floki one of the most memorable characters in the series. His performance reflects the complexity of Floki's character, who is both loyal to Ragnar and plagued by his own inner demons. Skarsgård manages to portray Floki as both comic relief and tragic figure, adding to the dynamics of the group.

Alongside the bloody power struggles and political intrigue, love also plays a major role. Ragnar's relationship with his wife Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and later with Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) adds emotional depth to the story. These relationships are often characterized by love, loss and the challenges that come with being a warrior and leader. A central element of the series is also the development of Ragnar's sons, in particular Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) and Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith). As the story progresses, they take on an increasingly larger role, showing both the ambitions and conflicts of the next generation of Vikings. Their own journeys, struggles and relationships expand the narrative and offer an exciting perspective on the challenges of their father's legacy.

The visual design of "Vikings" is breathtaking. The landscapes, the costumes and the battle scenes are carefully staged and give the series an authentic atmosphere. The cinematography and composition are masterful, and the epic battles are both brutal and artfully staged. The background music, including that of Trevor Morris, enhances the emotional impact of the scenes and contributes to the gripping atmosphere.

"Vikings" deals with many themes that go beyond the mere depiction of wars and conquests. The series sheds light on questions of identity, faith and the conflict between tradition and innovation. The Vikings, who are often portrayed as barbaric, also show deeper human emotions and cultural values. The confrontation with Christianity and the ancient beliefs of the North Germanic peoples is a central theme that shapes the characters and their decisions.

------------- Conclusion:

Outstanding - One of our favorite series, we loved it, rooted for it, cried and laughed with it. It captivated us from start to finish. With a strong cast, especially through the outstanding performances of Travis Fimmel, Katheryn Winnick and Gustaf Skarsgård, as well as a gripping plot and impressive visual elements, the series succeeds in transporting viewers into the harsh and fascinating world of the Vikings. The combination of action, drama, romance and profound characters makes "Vikings" one of the best series of recent years and a must for every series lover.

The Alienist (2018–2020)
10/10
Atmospherically dense thriller series that knows how to captivate
1 September 2024
Jack the Ripper, Sherlock Holmes, yes, those were my first thoughts, the comparison is obvious. Same time (around 1900), similar setting (one big city London, one big city New York) and similarly egocentric characters (Holmes / Kreisler).

"The Alienist" is a psychological thriller enriched with horror elements that captivates from start to finish. Each season is a gripping thriller that is so intelligent and detailed that it keeps you entertained and guessing until the end. In each episode, more and more of the mystery is revealed and you want to know where it leads.

The lead actors Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning deliver outstanding performances and contribute significantly to the success of the series. Daniel Brühl masterfully brings Dr. Kreizler to life - a kind of miniature version of the brilliant, socially awkward Sherlock Holmes. He is a virtuoso expert, but often unintentionally offends those around him and puts his own opinion above everything else.

Not only the top-class cast, but also the lovingly detailed set is evidence of high quality. The elegant houses of high society, the small, dark, dirty alleyways where boys sell their bodies, the majestic shots of New York City, offer an extremely aesthetic sight. This is further emphasized by the elaborate lighting, the detailed set and the carefully selected costumes.

The screenplay, the dark, atmospheric mood and the camera work are superb. The plot is creepy and yet realistic. The story contains some heavy fare, including child prostitution, the abduction of babies, women's rights, the treatment of minorities, the misery in the immigrant districts, medical changes and technological progress. The historical setting and the dressing of the corpses are inevitably reminiscent of the still unsolved "Jack the Ripper murders".

----------- Conclusion:

Outstanding - The series sparks an entertaining game of cat-and-mouse with no shortage of eerie moments. We binge-watched the series and were captivated until the very end.

A youth movie with heart and passion for gymnastics and dancing based on true events
1 September 2024
This biopic tells the inspiring true story of a young gymnast who, after a serious car accident, struggles with injuries to realize her dream of a career in professional sports.

It is a mixture of a sports and a dance movie, as it is a hip hop dance group that gives the young girl back her self-confidence and also a new passion.

In many ways it feels like a teen movie, both in the character drawing and in some of the storylines and visual style. It's hard to judge how close the plot is to reality, but the presence of some real people in the movie suggests that the portrayal is authentic.

Overall, the movie is not a "game changer" and features some already familiar elements from other sports and dance movies and remains predictable in many ways. Nevertheless, it has the potential to inspire people and carries a beautiful message that many people could benefit from. The story is definitely encouraging. If some children are motivated by this movie to work on what they want to achieve despite all the difficulties, then it definitely has a right to exist.

The script and direction are solid. The film lives above all from its gripping story, the impressive dance and gymnastics interludes and the always appropriate, rousing music, which pays particular attention to the dance scenes. The leading actors and most of the supporting cast bring the story to life. Ana Golja and Sarah Fisher are convincing in their roles, while the real Ariana and her trainer can be seen in guest appearances. The running time and the pace of the story are perfectly paced.

It is nice to see original footage of the people involved at the end of the movie with some information about them and their careers.

------------ Conclusion:

Quite good - An all-round feel-good movie with a nice message especially recommended for teenagers or as a family movie.

Carrie Pilby (2016)
10/10
Cute coming of age movie with a lot of heart and humor about a female nerd searching for her place in the world
20 August 2024
"Carrie Pilby" is a heartwarming movie based on the novel of the same name by Caren Lissner. The story revolves around the highly intelligent but socially awkward Carrie, who struggles with the challenges of growing up in a world full of expectations and norms.

Carrie is a young Harvard graduate, healthy and pretty and lives in a New York apartment. Her mother has died and her father never has time. So her therapist is the only one she can talk to and, if she has her way, she prefers to hide behind her books anyway. She has become cynical, defensive and a loner without a job or a goal. Her therapist suggests a list of goals for her to achieve in order to get her used to relationships and so-called normal interactions in life, so that Carrie doesn't end up a brilliant but unhappy, lonely person. Although the plan is so straightforward and simple that Carrie merely re-reads a favorite book, makes a friend, dates, gets a pet, and does something she loved as a child, Carrie recoils, resists, and finds snappy ways to cut back. Although Carrie struggles, the plan begins to work its magic and get her to re-engage with the world.

Bel Powley is brilliant in the title role. She is a sympathetic and absolutely loveable protagonist. Carrie is a true original - smart, funny and vulnerable at the same time. She is charming and a wonderful sight to behold. Bel Powley as Carrie strikes just the right note with her big expressive eyes and ironic reactions to a strange world. The movie sensitively portrays her inner struggle to accept her own expectations and society's norms as she tries to find her place in the world.

Susan Johnson's direction brings out the characters and their relationships brilliantly. The chemistry between Carrie and the other characters, including her best friends and her mentors, should be emphasized. These interactions are often humorous, but also profound and add to the emotional depth of the story. The dialog is sharp and witty.

The film's themes - self-acceptance, friendship and the search for one's own path - are universal and timeless. "Carrie Pilby" encourages viewers to embrace their individuality and not be pressured by the expectations of others. The mixture of humor and heart makes this film a refreshing experience.

The lovingly crafted sets and vibrant color palette create an inviting atmosphere that perfectly underscores the emotional highs and lows of Carrie's journey.

-------------- Conclusion:

Outstanding - A magical, heart-warming coming-of-age movie. The passion in this work is palpable and conveys a wonderful sense of well-being. Bel Powley inspires throughout the film with her temperament, courage, humor and touching moments.

Death's Game (2023– )
10/10
Great fantasy drama with important content and great actors
30 July 2024
When life becomes challenging, especially in times of lack of money or prospects, it can be hard to hold on to life. The thought of ending it all can seem tempting, but what if death itself is tired of this last resort?

This gripping psychological thriller mini-series explores themes of mortality, love, family and regret. It follows the story of Choi Yi-jae, a man who struggled for seven years to land his dream job. After failing to get hired at his dream company Taekang for the second time, losing all his investments and even his home, he sees no way out and decides to end his life. He angers Death so much that he has to die 12 more times as punishment and if he doesn't survive in one of the bodies Death chooses, his true suffering begins.

"Death's Game" reimagines life after Choi's suicide like a video game whose limited lives function like a reincarnation with different save points and whose 'game over' means eternal damnation in hell. Each "new" life is different and so excitingly interwoven that you want to know how they end. Thanks to the innovative storytelling (based on the acclaimed webtoon), each new demise of the protagonist is eagerly awaited. However, the whole thing is broken up with a lot of black humor and lends some lightness to the enormous emotional depth.

However, due to the drastic depiction of death, suicide and associated disturbing content, caution is advised for some people.

Thanks to the great script and direction, the whole story is unpredictable, although the story of tricking death is not new. But this series has so much to offer: It's smart, gritty, gory, heartwarming, heartbreaking, just to name a few.

The entire cast is great. Each actor perfectly deepens their character and carries the viewer away full of emotion. Be it sadness or anger, disappointment or happiness. Park So-dam really stands out as the female Death. She combines beauty and coolness and gives her role an enormous amount of charisma. Her eyes are perfect, as is her evil grin when she wants to make life difficult for the protagonist. Her acting is simply superb.

The cinematography is beautiful and meticulous. With amazing shots, angles and a great one-shot action sequence, it knows how to captivate. The visual effects may not be of the highest Hollywood quality, but there are masterfully choreographed set pieces to keep you on the edge of your seat.

For fans of the genre and newcomers alike, this is a South Korean series that deserves attention. It offers action, romance, fierce drama, black humor and, of course, serial killers.

--------------- Conclusion:

Outstanding - "Game of Death" is unique and intriguing with such a strong story and a unique way of approaching the question of what is worth living for. Life is beautiful because it is a chance itself, no matter how lost you are, never give up on yourself.

great animated film with great humor and very topical messages
24 June 2024
Sony Picture presents an animated film that is second to none and can easily keep up with Disney and Pixar.

The story takes a tongue-in-cheek look at our internet culture, with all its dependencies. There is a slight reference to Apple with its presentations and the smartphone with an AI. But there are also messages about the acceptance of family and human connection. The father-daughter relationship is treated with care and heart. Overall, I felt the relationship of the family members, as well as their respective characters, was quite realistic.

The action is thrilling, the animation is breathtaking, you can see that the characters were created with a lot of love, brilliantly stylized CGI, a unique style and character design. Much of the technology used in Spider-Man: A New Universe was also employed. This gave the film a picturesque and lovingly designed aura. I was really thrilled and completely surprised by an additional media cross-fade, which I hadn't expected.

Here we have one of those rare films that appeals to parents and children on their own level and yet has a common ground. It's incredibly fun from start to finish. The designs are elegant, the blend of visual styles is entertaining, the generational clash is amusing and the humor is on point.

My personal highlight was the cross-eyed dog Monchi, he has a place in my heart forever, he was mega.

A movie that really puts you in a good mood and that you can watch again and again.

------------- Conclusion: Outstanding - A robot riot of the funny kind - colorful, chaotic and lovable with a great sense of humor that hits the mark with a disarmingly perceptive emotional core. A movie you can watch several times and therefore a very clear recommendation. 🎬 💛

Dexter (2006–2013)
1/10
soooo boring
21 June 2024
Unfortunately, I can't understand the hype surrounding this series in any way. I really tried it and made it to the end of season 3, but then gave up because it just wasn't meant to be. :-P

The first thing that got on my nerves very quickly was Dexter's eternal head voice. He babbles incessantly and unfortunately he always spoils himself, so that any kind of tension is lost. Everything happens with an announcement and you can just watch him do it. That wouldn't be so bad in itself if it wasn't so boring. I'm still wondering why it should be rated 18? There are countless films/series in which it is much harder and that with FSK 16. Here you basically see tons of cling film and the pattern is always the same. Wrapped up, then a small slit in the cheek for the memory test and then it's just hinted that a chainsaw is used. That's okay for the first ten times, but then it's just boring.

Many people complain about Dexter's annoying sister, but what I found worse was his girlfriend, who was always whining. She really got on my nerves. No matter whether there was joy or sorrow, she was always equally tearful.

The humor (if there is any in the series) didn't hit me. The look is of course getting on in years and I wonder if I would have liked it better back then. Nevertheless, there are also series from that time that have "aged" less.

For me, it's a typical early evening series where everything is talked to death, everything is very drawn out and there's no suspense or surprises.

Too bad, but I gave it a try. - It wasn't meant to be. But the series has its community and that's fine. :-)

A charming feel-good movie that shows the power animals have on people
16 June 2024
"Bob the Stray" tells the touching true story of James Bowen, who won his battle against homelessness and drug addiction with the help of a cat's friendship. When we first see James singing and playing his guitar outside Covent Garden tube station, he is in decidedly bad shape - broke, homeless and addicted to heroin. Highlighted is the main character's isolation, how detached he is from the outside world and people in general, as well as the redemption he finds through meeting Bob, a roaming cat who has accidentally walked into his life.

Luke Treadaway, delivers a powerful, believable performance that effortlessly conveys the hopelessness, anguish and despair. This movie could easily have drifted into cuteness a la Disney. But director Roger Spottiswoode, with the help of the script, managed to create a perfectly balanced story that touches the heart without shying away from the darker aspects of James' recovery. Thus, the movie manages to keep a light side with a touch of comedy alongside the seriousness. One should not expect too much harshness here. The movie is more suitable for a younger audience. The screenwriter deserves praise for showing the humiliating and tragic side of drug addiction without making it too overtly harrowing and thus making it accessible to a family audience. But still, the movie tackles a serious subject, the arduous struggle and James' desire to kick the habit once and for all.

Basically the entire cast is good, Ruta Gedmintas adds some color to the film and it's amazing to see a bond develop between Bob and James as they both take care of each other. Even though she was only supposed to be a fictional character in the story, she fit in super nicely and we wished for them to get together until the very end as they seem like they were made for each other.

The greatest actor is of course Bob the cat, whether Bob "played" the whole movie or just a few scenes himself is irrelevant. I wouldn't ask the animal to do it either, because as it is, he steals every scene he's in. The animal POV perspectives from Bob's point of view are a nice change of pace. Not too much and not too little.

This movie shows in a wonderful way how much strength animals can give people. Through their unconditional love and friendship, and it doesn't matter which animal it ends up being. Whether bird, dog, cat or donkey.... Of course, it always has a special character when these loyal friendships involve freedom-loving animals that tend to be loners. Animals usually need a home and someone to take care of them and humans sometimes need the animal to find the strength to save themselves and to find meaning in their lives. Just like in this movie. There are many touching moments in the movie that brought a tear or two to my eyes.

An inspiring movie that gives courage and hope. Unfortunately, it also shows how people are characterized by selfishness and envy, which is always saddening. Even today, James Bowen still receives death threats against his four-legged friend, which simply leaves me stunned.

Even though the movie is a bit older, you can't tell. It's still topical, the movie has more of a British feel to it than a glossy Hollywood movie, which makes it authentic. With just one penetrating look from Bob, any attempt at resistance is hopelessly futile. Perfectly paced, enchanting and entertaining.

------------- Conclusion:

Excellent - It's a heartwarming story of a man who is given a second chance in life and is able to take it thanks to the friendship and strength of Bob the cat. A movie that everyone can enjoy, not just cat lovers.

A Private War (2018)
7/10
An outstanding Rosamund Pike and a fiery plea for the war reporters who put their lives on the line
14 June 2024
"A Private War" is a biographical portrait of war reporter Marie Colvin (1956-2012), who reported from the world's crisis regions for decades until she was killed on assignment in Syria in 2012. She was a remarkable and very difficult woman with a complex personality who fought resolutely against war with her work. She wanted to make it clear that where bombs and gunfire fall, it is always individual people who suffer, which is all too often forgotten in the battle of political interests. To understand Marie Colvin and her work even better, we recommend the documentary "Under the Wire" as a supplement to the film.

The film "A Private War" emphasizes the importance of the work of independent reporters. It is a plea for the many journalists and reporters who put their lives on the line to gather objective information about conflicts and their victims and share it with the world.

Marie Colvin is one of the most famous war reporters in the world. For decades, she reported on the conflicts in Sri Lanka, the two Gulf Wars, Lebanon and Kosovo. In 1986, she was the first to interview Muammar al-Gaddafi after the attacks on Libya. She has received several awards, including the British Press Award - Best Foreign Correspondent of the Year in 2000, the Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation in 2000 and the Anna Politkovskaya Award from the British human rights organization Reach All Women in War (RAW) in 2012.

This movie is not about "the good guys and the bad guys", it is not about the countries at war. It's about the journalists who, as unarmed civilians, fight with all their might for information and pictures in order to make the fate of the civilian population heard. In doing so, they risk not only their lives but also their personal salvation. Because the terrible experiences they have to endure in such war zones haunt them even after their work on the ground.

The drama traces her missions chronologically, focusing primarily on the reporter's personality. The multi-layered film brings out Colvin's inner turmoil as she suffers from the turmoil of war and wages her own inner battle with herself. Even at home, she is plagued by visions of war memories and driven to the edge of the bearable with a tendency to numb it all. But she can't help but continue her work, almost obsessed with it and driven by adrenaline.

"A Private War" impresses with its authenticity, exciting narrative style and excellent direction and camerawork. The portrait of Marie Colvin is portrayed respectfully and in great detail, without glorifying her. Many of the extras in the film are from Syria, which gives the film an additional layer of authenticity. This is because the emotions portrayed in the film reflect the real experiences of many people. The semi-documentary style of the film impressively conveys to the viewer the demanding work of war journalism, which is more important than ever in these times.

---------------- Conclusion:

Worth seeing - Rosamund Pike delivers an outstanding performance in documentary director Matthew Heineman's impressive directorial debut, impressively revealing the motivations, traumas and ultimately the fate of war reporter Marie Colvin.

Cheesy predictable little romance for once watch ok
21 May 2024
A romantic movie about a musician who makes a living on the road and a single mother who also has a passion for music. If you like country music, you can get involved in the romance. Ben Barnes plays authentically in a light-footed way and I didn't even know Katherine Heigl could sing. Although both have rather thin voices, the songs are not bad, but the wow effect is missing. The script also lacks emotional depth and touching moments. Everything is quite predictable with no big twists. A light, pleasant musical romance morsel that won't be remembered.

------------ Conclusion: so so, cheesy predictable little romance for once watch ok.

Lost & Found (2022)
10/10
Atmospherically dense thriller mix with little surprises
16 May 2024
"The Trail of Bones" is very reminiscent of the style of well-known Spanish thriller series and Álvaro Morte is also a familiar face since "House of Money". This is a successful mixture of mystery, thriller, some action and a thriller romance. The setting is excellently chosen, the main character Mario played by Álvaro Morte is an oddball loner who works in a municipal lost and found office. His passion is to breathe a second life into old lost items and, ideally, return them to their former owners.

The location alone, a former train station that serves as Mario's home and workplace, is impressive. As are the many selected props. After a gruesome discovery in a suitcase, he is gripped and determined to find out what it is all about. Especially when it quickly becomes clear that the police are no longer interested, as no concrete evidence of a crime has been found, Mario takes the search into his own hands. His character is very clever but also very driven by his emotions, perhaps a little stereotypical, a Spanish daredevil who impulsively doesn't give a damn at times, almost naively getting himself into dangerous situations. Even if not everyone can share this approach, it still remains credible. All the actors do a good job, but the beautiful María Eugenia Suárez as "Sara" carries the movie together with Álvaro Morte.

It is not only a well-written crime story with a realistic theme, but also a desperate human love story that takes risky turns from the very beginning. "The Trail of Bones" is particularly characterized by its dense atmosphere. What begins gloomy, dark, sometimes disgusting and scary, turns into sun-drenched images with a touch of "hope and a perfect world". The score supports the respective moments. Especially when it alternates between quiet passages and subtle action. This keeps the story varied and exciting.

Unfortunately, "The Trail of Bones" is not quite perfect. On the one hand, the very good pace of the story is somewhat at the expense of the detailed character sketches. We learn relatively little about Mario and almost nothing about Sara's past. The same goes for the supporting characters. However, this is justifiable, as in a length of 1 hour 47 minutes, compromises have to be made and the overall story works on its own. A somewhat unfortunate choice is the lack of a time window - such as "eight months later" for time jumps. This would have been important for a logical and coherent presentation. If you can figure it out for yourself and don't attach too much importance to it, you can still enjoy the movie.

I would normally give it 7.5/10. Due to the few partly unfounded bad reviews, I have decided to give it 10/10. Because I watched the movie twice, due to the logic holes that some people criticized. But I have to say, if you pay close attention, it's coherent and apart from the missing time period as described above, there are no holes in the logic.

--------------- Conclusion:

Worth seeing - A little hidden gem in the Spanish thriller genre. A gripping, entertaining story with an emotional ending.

Time (2021– )

Moving, credible character study - excellently realized
13 May 2024
Season 1:

The first season is set in a men's prison and focuses on two men who are on opposite sides. Both have to face the horrors of prison in their own way.

On the one hand, Mark Cobden, played by Sean Bean, a former teacher and alcoholic who killed a man while drunk driving and was therefore sentenced to four years in prison must learn to stand up for himself, otherwise he will be destroyed by his fellow inmates. On the other side is Eric McNally, played by Stephen Graham. A decent man who works as a prison guard in the same prison and is blackmailed by other prisoners. He has to decide whether to go against his principles in order to protect his son, who is in another prison.

Screenwriter Jimmy McGovern has succeeded in creating a credible, intelligent and genuinely moving drama that is completely devoid of gimmickry. Instead, it gets to the heart of what is wrong with the prison system in a calm and penetrating way. Because one thing is clear: it offers hardly any opportunities for rehabilitation. It is mostly run by the inmates and dominated by power struggles between inmates and guards.

It is a character study in perfection, with every theme, nuance and character brought to the point. Sean Bean and Stephen Graham give excellent performances, but the supporting cast is equally impressive. The dialog is sharp and to the point. The camera is restrained with blue, cool tones. The soundtrack by Sarah Warne wonderfully supports the emotional moments. "Time" tells of heartbreaking decisions and lets a tear or two roll down your face in the final episode. The manageable length of the respective seasons is compactly reduced to the essentials, so that no lengths creep in but there is still enough depth for the characters.

-

Season 2:

The second season in the same format, set in a women's prison. It is just as raw, tough, uncompromising and moving. It again has an outstanding ensemble cast and a brilliant script, this time written by Jimmy McGovern and Helen Black. Also with a heart for the working class.

---------------- Conclusion:

Worth watching - An empathetic drama that gets the tragedy exactly right. This series is a perfect deterrent. "Time" has a harsh but truthful reality. A recommendation for anyone interested in prison drama. He characters.

Nashville (2012–2018)
10/10
A true pearl, unique and grandiose with incredible musical talents
11 May 2024
"Nashville" is a captivating and engaging series that explores the life of the country music scene in Nashville, Tennessee. There are some who are in the music business who say it's just like this show. Ambition vs. Personal relationships; personal relationships that support ambition, and everything in between.

Of course, there are series that do something right and shine in certain areas, but few juggle multiple elements so skillfully. A great cast right down to the supporting roles, terrific music and a well-crafted script make this one of the best shows I've seen. With a mix of drama, music and romance, the series offers a gripping storyline and impressive musical performances.

Shot on location in Nashville, the look always retains its authenticity. With landmarks such as the Ryman Auditorium, the Grand Ole Opry and the Bluebird Cafe, among others, some new hotspots have landed on my bucket list and a visit to the "Music City" is a must. The camera work always offers a suitable and successful image design.

The characters are complex and well developed. Rayna Jaymes, played by Connie Britton, is an established country music icon who is faced with the challenges of growing older and the pressures of success.

Her rival Juliette Barnes, (Hayden Panettiere), is young, sexy and much more pop-oriented than Rayna. Her songs are in the charts. Rayna's kids sing Juliette's songs in the car. And Juliette is on the same label as Rayna. She, in turn, has to struggle with her rebellious behavior and her complex past. But the stories of other musicians and songwriters are also told, all of whom go through their own ups and downs.

What is really impressive and surprising here is the vocal talent shown by both leading actresses. All the performers sing themselves and the songs, which were written especially for the show by experts in the industry, are simply magnificent. Captivating, full of verve, but also emotional. They remain authentic and reflect the mood of the characters. Some of the hottest country musicians have co-produced the songs. Even Ilse DeLange (The Common Linnets) has a small guest role. The music was so successful that even after the series ended a year later, the musical "main cast" (Clare Bowen, Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson, Sam Palladio and Chris Carmack) went on another world tour and played the most successful songs. To this day, "Charles Esten and the Nashville Cast" still performs at concerts in Nashville. The music is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the series.

The direction and script allow the viewer to immerse themselves in the stories and be captivated by their great emotional depth. The story of the series is full of twists and surprises. Intrigue, romance and personal conflicts keep the viewer on their toes at all times. It also deals with serious issues such as drug abuse, family problems and the price of fame. This makes it not only an entertaining series, but also a reflection on the reality of the music business and life in the limelight.

All the actors deliver impressive performances. Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere are absolutely convincing in their roles and get to the heart of their characters' emotions. The supporting cast also contribute to the quality of the series, adding depth and credibility to the various storylines.

It's amazing how much talent the producers have been able to attract to a series.

I believe that this show, with its breath of fresh air, has given country music a revival.

--------------- Conclusion: This series is a real gem, unique and magnificent.

Killing Eve (2018–2022)
9/10
A refreshing mix of character study, action, suspense, a pinch of blood and the perfect amount of comedy.
4 May 2024
"Killing Eve" could be a classic spy drama that surprisingly uncovers an intricate and far-reaching conspiracy. But it is much more than that. Thriller, character study and entertainment at its best with British black dry humor without being silly but keeping the necessary seriousness.

The focus is on the two main characters, Eve and Villanelle, who at first glance could not be more different. Eve, played by Sandra Oh, leads an orderly, down-to-earth life. She is a bored slob at MI5 who is stuck behind her desk and is really hooked on the search for a serial killer. She craves the challenge of finding a worthy opponent and breaking out of the daily grind. She wants to feel the rush of adrenaline again. Sandra Oh embodies her character superbly. But it is also one of her strengths and in many moments it reminded me of "Grey's Anatomy". She was absolutely right in her role, but unfortunately didn't show a surprisingly different side of herself. She almost always has the same surprised, annoyed, almost astonished expression on her face. Her dogged character and her development were therefore not as extraordinary as those of Villanelle, played by the magnificent Jodie Comer. Her facial expressions and gestures are simply magnificent.

You could write pages and pages of praise for Villanelle, or rather Jodie Comer. She is the one who gives the series its soul. It is she who is so surprisingly and refreshingly captivating as the playful, psychopathic killer Villanelle. She carries out her assignments ruthlessly with a self-confidence that is second to none and matches her extravagant nature. She manages to be simultaneously frightening and disturbing, yet amusing and endearing at the same time - this is great entertainment. Her character is wonderfully quirky and absolutely fascinating. It's wonderful to watch her do her job so well. Along the way, she enjoys the perks of being one of the best and feels downright unassailable, even when things don't go to plan. Jodie Comer develops an incredible presence in front of the camera, which is so impressive that one would also grant her a Golden Globe. Because "Killing Eve" lives above all through this extraordinary character, who you take to your heart despite her actions.

However, you shouldn't expect realism in this series. People can be murdered far too often without it being noticed or the police being called. Some of Eve's "combat interludes" are also not particularly worthy of MI5. In the end, even "the Twelve" are just a subplot in the story.

Overall, the series remains fast-paced and exciting over the four seasons. Villanelle's many different, unusual, extravagant costumes are not necessarily beautiful but are definitely eye-catching. The different filming locations also offer a good variety. From well-known metropolises to spots at the end of the world. The music was always appropriate and sometimes very beautiful. Unfortunately, the ending is very disappointing and leaves a bitter aftertaste.

----- Conclusion:

Excellent - "Killing Eve" delights with its quirky humor and with Jodie Comer's outstanding performance as the playful, psychopathic killer Villanelle. With tongue-in-cheek dialog and a charm all of its own, "Killing Eve" is refreshing, fascinating and provides perfect entertainment with an ending that unfortunately disappoints. Nevertheless, this series was a very positive surprise. Sue absolutely deserves all the award nominations she has received.

Steve Jobs (2015)
8/10
The dark side of the character of a man with a high degree of genius
28 April 2024
Even though "Steve Jobs" is a biopic, one should not expect an exact biography. A creative self-interpretation of the biography was chosen here. The story, which follows an unconventional but fascinating three-act structure, is divided into three major product presentations by its hero, each in front of a large audience, in 1984, 1988 and 1998. However, the focus is not on the new innovations, such as the first Mac computer, the Next Cube, or then the first iMac, which Jobs presents in his speeches. Instead, the viewer is taken backstage. In camera movements that are as nervous as they are elegant, director Boyle shows a man who is constantly on the move; a frenzied man who jostles his companions. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin presents the viewer with a completely messed-up character. We learn almost nothing about his life or who he was, other than what we learn from his interactions with his daughter, his assistant Joanna and Steve Wozniack. The central theme is Jobs' relationship with his daughter Lisa, whose fatherhood he refused to come to terms with for years. Surely there could have been more complexity for a perfectionist who was very difficult to work with. Although much is left out, it is still surprisingly effective.

Aaron Sorkin has delivered a great screenplay. The dialog he writes and the wonderful pacing make the two hour running time fly by. The story moves at an energetic pace and is carried by the intensity of the characters. Another strength of the movie is the performance of the great cast. There are intense and powerful moments. Fassbender may not look like Steve Jobs, but he's still great and has an incredibly captivating appearance. He embodies his hero at the beginning as an emotionless robot, slightly hunchbacked, with thin lips and an ever-so-slightly wandering autistic look, as befits a shaggy-haired nerd. Later as a cool businessman and finally as a starving obsessive who slowly becomes a human being after all. Fassbender's performance is on point and he delivers the wonderfully written dialog in a convincing manner. (Not without reason was he nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Oscars) Jobs' assistant, Joanna, played magnificently by Kate Winslet with cold eyes and a surprising toughness, acts as his conscience, his anchor. And Seth Rogan as Steve Wozniak was simply on a par with his colleagues.

All in all, director Boyle has followed Steve Job's maxim - that design is everything - and turned it all into a movie. It is a work of art in itself made up of razor-sharp dialog, editing and acting. The music is both restrained and lively when it is used. Even the time shift between the present and the different pasts between John Sculley and Jobs is masterfully done.

Emotionally, the movie surprised and also touched me. For me, this movie is the most human portrayal of Jobs that I have ever seen. Because even though some of it is fictional and may never have happened, it sounds exactly like something Steve Jobs would have done or said and at the end you have the feeling that you have seen something behind the scenes. With the conclusion that nobody is perfect.

"What you do is not the best thing about you. If you're a father, that should be the best part of you."

--------------- Conclusion: Worth seeing - It's thought-provoking, fascinating, intelligent and fast-paced, with plenty of wit, intensity and biting interludes. Steve Jobs was a fascinating, if complex, man, so a movie based on him would always pique my interest.

The Night Of (2016)
9/10
Socially critical thriller - not a new story, but excellently told
28 April 2024
"The Night Of" is a successful social thriller that deals with the prejudices against Arab and Muslim people. The series shows how helplessly the protagonist "Naz" is at the mercy of his fate and how strongly the decisions of lawyers, judges and the police affect his life.

You shouldn't expect any action. The story is told slowly and calmly and you quickly feel the powerlessness that the naive Naz feels. Riz Ahmed is brilliant as Naz, from the first scene to the last. A nice young man from next door, with big doe eyes, a slight build and from a good home. Riz Ahmed believably embodies every aspect of his character and the change he undergoes over time is impressively realized and harrowing. You wouldn't recognize him from the beginning to the end.

You empathize with him the whole time and wonder feverishly what happened on the decisive night. This tension lasts until the very end.

What seems to be quite clear turns out to be different than expected. Nothing is as it seems.

The only certainty is that people also make mistakes and are sometimes no longer aware of the consequences of their decisions. "The Night Of" quickly makes it clear that justice sometimes plays no role in the judicial system. Not many people are interested in the truth, prejudices are made too quickly. The viewer becomes part of the jury and is forced to reflect on their own prejudices. An Arab, a Muslim, that must be the murderer. In many people's minds, the evidence is already complete with one glance at the color of the skin.

John Turturro's performance is also great as a good-natured defense lawyer who always handles his cases according to the rules. He struggles with himself, his case and his eczema/psoriasis in such an excellent way that he has earned our sympathy. We often had to laugh and this humor did the series good and provided a good balance.

Richard Price as screenwriter and director Steven Zaillian have found a good pace. They have succeeded in telling a story that is not new in a captivating, touching and entertaining way. Whether Naz's behavior is "illogical" at one point or another doesn't matter to me, because the series is about a prejudiced system, how it can suddenly suck you in, make you a helpless pawn until it spits you out again.

The camera work was great and was convincing with well thought-out and successful images. The whole interplay, including editing and music, creates a gripping atmosphere. A drama that is touching because it feels so real, but doesn't become too heavy and keeps the tension until the end.

----- Conclusion:

Excellent - great actors, a story that is not new but is told in an outstanding way. It is not without reason that there were many awards for acting, editing and cinematography. Including five Emmy Awards.

An exciting mix of drama and thriller with surprises
27 April 2024
"The Chalk Line" is a special thriller that makes use of different genres and has its very own narrative rhythm. In the Spanish film industry, the name Álex de la Iglesia is synonymous with disturbing and controversial cinema. Although he "only" produced the thriller "The Chalk Line" and left the direction to his compatriot Ignacio Tatay, this film is also like a punch in the gut with its subject matter and ever-increasing tension. The fact that the film about a traumatized child is loosely based on a true story lends it an even more oppressive note.

A couple are driving alone on a road when a distraught little child in pyjamas runs towards them. So they take off and look for help... there's a tension right from the start where you don't know where the journey is going. You know too many psycho-horror scenarios to imagine a range of possibilities.

At the hospital, it turns out that the little girl is in a poor state of health. As she does not speak and has behavioral problems, the hospital staff are unable to cope with the 6-year-old, so they sedate and restrain her. The couple, Paula and Simón are interested in the child and visit her regularly. Their interest is not entirely unfounded, as they have been struggling for years with an unfulfilled desire to have children. Paula is all the more delighted when the doctor gives them the opportunity to take the girl, who responds to the name Clara, home with them temporarily to help them find the parents with the trust they have built up in the child.

"The Chalk Line" is a slow and quiet film that focuses on the traumatized psyche of the child, as well as the cautious rapprochement and relationship between Clara and Paula. Many questions are raised in the process. Is the child the evil one? Has something bad happened? If so, what ...

But it also delves deeper into the sad fate of the couple, the strain that a marriage is exposed to when the desire to have children is unfulfilled. The emotions that the couple go through are authentically conveyed by the actors and the child manages to portray a creepy character and a needy victim at the same time.

So the movie resembles a drama in the first two thirds. However, thanks to an outstanding acting performance by little Clara, played by Eva Tennear, it is captivating. Visually, it's a standard look for modern-day thrillers in the popular dark blue tint at a good level. The atmosphere is gloomy throughout.

It never gets boring, as there is a constant tension in the air that makes you very attentive and keeps you guessing for a long time. The whole thing is also supported by the music which repeatedly creates moments of unease.

The story is full of twists and turns and the pieces of the puzzle only come together slowly. Patience is rewarded in the end. Because the story picks up speed in the last third and shows its exciting thriller side. This part kept me riveted and biting my nails. Its surprises and twists kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last minute. In the end, the "finale" was so exciting that I almost had to cover my eyes because I didn't want to see what I suspected.

---------------- Conclusion:

Excellent - An interesting genre mix that interweaves drama and thriller very well and is also emotionally moving. There is so much guilt/innocence here that it is a real pleasure to watch this movie, peppered with twists, it is a well-rounded and successful thriller story in which you are on the edge of your seat until the last minute and wish for a good outcome.

Halo (2022–2024)
9/10
Top entertainment at a high visual level
23 April 2024
"Halo" wants to be understood as an independent narrative. Since I haven't played the game and am therefore unbiased, it worked. You get a decently made action series with special effects from the Pixomondo masters (e.g. House of Dragon, Game of Thrones) and a good man vs. Evil aliens storyline.

It may start a little slow for some as the world and characters are built up, but as I was unfamiliar with the content of the game, it was quite helpful. There's also a big battle in the first few minutes where the divisions get to show what they've got.

The decision to show that there is a flesh and blood person behind the helmet, how John thinks and feels, how vulnerable he is when he's not behind his armor, how broken a person he is, that's one of the strengths of the series. It makes the character emotionally accessible. Lead actor Pablo Schreiber as John fills this role perfectly. Many of the characters have depth that gradually unfolds. It is a pleasure to see how the divisions develop, which were only seen as mere machines and denied any independent feelings and thoughts. How the team spirit overrides the chain of command. There are several storylines in this series, all of which intertwine. Everything remains in flux and you always have to sort out who has bad and who has good intentions.

The second major strength of the series is the high production quality. Almost everything is just right here. (Except for tiny details that you can overlook and that don't bother you) The visual power is incredible. The dense atmosphere that is created draws the viewer deeper and deeper into the vastness of space. David Wiener knows how to build up tension, e.g. In dark, gloomy and narrow places - with the enemy breathing down your neck. The camera delivers high-gloss images and seems to be inspired by the video game style; for example, there are also shots from the perspective of the Master Chief - a clear homage to the first-person shooter look of the game. In short: after watching the "Halo" series, you'll want to play the game. Because the setting, the equipment, the armor, weapons, spaceships and the various "worlds" have also been worked out with so much attention to detail that it makes a sci-fi heart beat faster. The battles are fast-paced and fast-moving. Together with all the CGI, this is impressive. "Halo" at an extremely high level.

If you always stick exactly to the source material, whether books or games, you will always be disappointed and should always stick to the "original". You should always be open to changes and see it as a modified story, then you can usually enjoy it. This is a sci-fi series for a broad audience and not just a cinematic summary as pure "fan service".

-------------- Conclusion: Outstanding - The story is well written, the acting is good and there is plenty of quality action and drama. We enjoyed the series from start to finish and couldn't stop watching. We are very much hoping for a sequel.

Charming crime story with a great 1940s look
23 April 2024
As is so typical of the time, it is up to the men to work for the police and go on the hunt for murderers. In the eyes of her mother and society, the well-heeled Marina should, according to the cliché, only be concerned with good looks, manners and a future husband. But Marina wears her heart on her sleeve and her temperament gets her into trouble here and there. She particularly dislikes the fact that a woman is not allowed to work as a policewoman at this time. Her father encouraged her to use her talents and intelligence as a little girl to train her to be a good "policewoman" by passing on his knowledge as a very successful policeman.

When several prostitutes are found murdered and the police are in the dark, Marina throws herself into her own investigation, much to her mother's annoyance. She is interested in the latest technology and science, educates herself "secretly" and enjoys using these resources. She is supported by her loyal butler Hector (Jean Reno).

This series thrives on its consistent charm. Although it is a Spanish production, it could easily pass for a French one. Jean Reno is entertaining as Hector, who is more friend than servant and is also very good at keeping a low profile.

Aura Garrido embodies her character in an enchanting and very convincing way, with a lot of temperament and a beautiful style of dress. The make-up and costume department have done a great job here. But also the entire setting, the equipment with gorgeous cars and the always appropriate locations at the time. It all goes hand in hand and complements each other to create an all-round convincing 1940s look. The camera captures all of this with high-gloss images. A very nice artistic film style, the lighting together with a suitable, lively and beautiful music, makes the series worth seeing. The fast-paced plot with the necessary action towards the end provides entertainment. A Private Affair takes you on a rollercoaster ride of fun and mystery.

I don't know if a second season was ever planned, but you can live with the end of the series. The "case" is closed.

--------------- Conclusion:

Worth seeing - A beautiful production with a bit of everything, exciting, humorous, romantic, stylish with an enchanting leading actress and an as always worth seeing Jean Reno.

Nothing that will be remembered
18 April 2024
Actually, the movie doesn't do much wrong and yet it couldn't pick me up. Perhaps it's simply due to the already hackneyed story, which has nothing to offer in terms of surprises or twists. There were also no shock or scare moments.

The actors are a big plus point. I love Anthony Hopkins and it was "only" because of him that I watched the movie. I wasn't disappointed by him either. He is simply outstanding in everything he does. I particularly liked him towards the end of the movie, where the effects and make-up were also very good. Unfortunately, it was a long way to get there, and in the almost two hours, everything happens the way it has to. A young man decides to train as a priest for reasons that are sometimes incomprehensible. He also doubts for a long time while he accompanies Father Lucas during his exorcism rituals. The effects during these "treatments" were rather average. The atmosphere, the look is dark and fits the story. Overall, however, it was just too little for me to be gripped by suspense.

--------------- Conclusion: Uninteresting - nothing memorable and with the terrific Anthony Hopkins there are far better movies.

Chemistry of Death (2023– )
9/10
Fast-paced British crime thriller
11 April 2024
"The Chemistry of Death" is a film adaptation of Simon Beckett's bestsellers. The first two novels have been incorporated into the six-part series. So you shouldn't expect the depth of the novels in the series. However, those who are able to steer clear of this will be entertained at a fast pace.

Basically, there is nothing on offer here that has not already been seen in one form or another in other British crime series. From the investigator who is tormented by private demons to the village with pubs that are getting on in years and where everyone knows everyone else, surrounded by dense forests. And yet the series was still convincing. It does a lot of things right. Starting with an enchanting, melancholy, gentle intro song. "Mogli - AFTERMATH" had to be bought straight away. The locations are beautiful, from rural England to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. One of the strengths here is the cinematography. And it's not just the landscapes, but the way it captures the characters, the scene, the environment the characters are in, the mood and the atmosphere that immerses the viewer.

Time is taken to explore the broken side of the protagonist, a forensic pathologist. There are repeated flashbacks to his past. These run throughout the episodes and could have been fewer. His trauma is a crucial element of the character. Harry Treadaway embodies his fragile, sometimes weak character very convincingly.

The entire cast is wonderful and lends excellent credibility to the storylines.

The story is gripping, mysterious and dark. The voice-over, in a calm, gentle voice, gets under your skin. The brisk pace in particular does not allow for long stretches and maintains the menace right to the end. The story convinces with new twists and turns and remains unpredictable until the very last moment. - Especially the ending, where you should definitely watch the credits!

--------------- Conclusion:

Worth watching - a stylish and atmospheric series that entertained me with its pace better than many a traditional British crime thriller.

Proven concept - culture clash comedy full of prejudices and clichés
31 March 2024
"Monsieur Claude and his big party" is the third part of Monsieur Claude and his family. Philippe de Chauveron once again directs and Guy Laurent provides the screenplay. The culture clash comedy provides an insight into the everyday lives of families, the small conflicts that arise from family and neighborly closeness and the challenges that a big family celebration brings with it.

France's star comedian Christian Clavier embodies the bourgeoisie in his usual excellent role. Outwardly well-behaved and suave, but on the inside narrow-minded and full of prejudices. But still endearing at the same time. But the sons-in-law and their families are also delicious. Pascal N'Zonzi as André Koffi is particularly delightful in his role.

The script and staging tend to exaggerate the characters and provide plenty of situation comedy in the many mini-dramas that take place during the course of the plot. The film plays with foibles, deep-seated prejudices and makes it clear that thinking in racial categories is not the privilege of white people.

This black comedy does not shy away from political incorrectness and is presented with a light-footedness that makes it a pleasure to watch and laugh at. A sympathetic appeal for international understanding. You can feel the love for the family and it is love that always helps to fulfill family obligations and make compromises.

At the end, the movie leaves you with a warm, comforting feeling.

------------- Conclusion: Outstanding - The chaos is perfect again and the happy ending is also guaranteed.

A déjà vu effect cannot be denied. You get what you expect. We love it.
