I Am No One (2013)
Disappointing, and yet...
I was really hoping for something that gave more insight to the madness of a serial killer with this one. The unfortunately high expectations I'd held for this film fell completely flat once the runtime had passed 40 minutes out of a total of 55 and the main character (whom for the most part is the only character at all) had simply spoke frankly on his beliefs on society, humanity and anonymity for the purpose of killing people. Other than two scenes of the protagonist acting strangely with barbie dolls (which are never explained, even subtly as far as I could tell) there are only scene after scene, in different locations, of Charles Lake (the protagonist) talking and coming to apparent revelations. For those of you coming to see something that continues the style of documentary/slasher in a raw August Underground-esque feel, look elsewhere because there are only two scenes where he has ACTUALLY killed someone; both happen off-screen and you only see one of em at all. Even though I get that the writer was trying to really push that ANYONE who you've ever met could be a killer, I felt that it just didn't really go anywhere. All my bitchin aside, the acting of Mike Nall was very believable and since many of the scenes were ad libbed hats off to him for making the movie watchable whatsoever. Also the soundtrack was, at times, sublime.
overall 5/10
August Underground (2001)
Horror is once again sickening :)
I've gotta say, I was caught off guard with the level of unexpected and graphically disturbing violence as well as the behaviour of the main characters throughout this film. I expected another Murder-Set-Pieces, which I'd found to be average in every sense other than the level of gory violence. Honestly, being a lifelong horror fan, this was exactly what I was looking for. I'm f***king sick of the cookie-cut creature/monster/slasher horror movies to have been released for the vast majority over the past 20 odd years. I wanted something that could actually freak me out; the killer next door who could be the most average unassuming type of person. I found the (few) moments through the film where the inner psychology of these characters is expressed, to be surreal. And not just killers, but disturbed and spontaneously aggressive who get off especially on torturing and mutilating their victims in horrible ways (which sometimes even make THEM sick to their stomachs). This is the kind of horror of which I had been hoping the future would bring... something that is dark, twisted, sickening and most frightening of all, possible. 6.5/10
Blondes Have More Guns (1996)
Better than expected
I try my best not to judge movies based solely on others' reviews and in the case of Blondes Have More Guns, I've gotta say that I am so glad that I gave it a chance!
Anyone who knows TROMA films knows they're at their best when trying NOT to be taken seriously (while sprinkling true nuggets of social commentary here and there). The ridiculous is by far their forte and low budget or otherwise, this picture shows them doing what they do best.
If you're looking for something meaningful or deep, then my friend, you are barking up the wrong tree entirely and have no business watching any film from TROMA in the first place. If, however, you aim for some good (low-brow) humor then call some friends, crack a few beers and enjoy!
