The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Nothing new.
There is absolutely NOTHING new in this film. Forget all the people who are calling this ground breaking. Everything in this film has been done before and done much better.
The effects in this have gone back about 10 years. The Phantom Menace and Jurrasic Park showed just what amazing things could be done with computer animation but the effects in this movie are laughable.
The Hobbits change size from scene to scene! Didn't anyone notice? And did no one notice how fake the old wizard looked while he was running? The CGI was so bad I can't tell you.
Peter Jacksons direction is dull, stale and lacks imagination. Just think what Speilberg could have done with this story. We can all dream I suppose.
I give it 3 out of 10 and it's lucky to get that. It's dull, boring, pretentious drivel made by a bad film maker with a bad cast of so- called actors. It's no surprise that it failed misreably at the Oscars.
But the worst thing about this film is that you sit there for 3 hours and then there is no ending. What a con.
Don't by into the hype.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
The Greatest Film Ever!
Attack of the Clones is an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word. It's the greatest action adventure story I've ever seen and it blows everything else away!
If you haven't seen The Phantom Menace then you might struggle with some of the themes of this movie but that's my only complaint. It has everything you'd ever want in a Star Wars movie. No in fact, it has everything you'd ever want in ANY movie!
Great action, fast pace, romance, monsters, central characters that you really care about, stunning effects, a kick-ass soundtrack, huge battle scenes, strange enviroments, crazy aliens, ultra-cool characters, death, sorrow, humor, great acting, dialogue that you'll be quoting to you friends and all of this done by a director who proves once again what a film-making genius that he is!
*spoilers* The performances are fantastic. Hayden Christiansen is incredible as Anakin. He's charasmatic, charming, menacing, scary and vulnerable all at the same time. The death scene with him and his mother is probably the most moving moment in the Star Wars saga and the scene where Anakin confesses to Padme what he's done is a scene that will go down in film history.
Natalie Portman builds on her Ep1 performance and makes Padme a very well rounded 3 dimensional character. It's easy to imagine why Anakin would fall in love with her. Her performance is so subtle and that compliments the tour de force performances of the others. She plays it beautifully with Padme at first trying to resist Anakins charms and convince herself that she's not in love with him only to make her feelings known in a fantastic scene towards the end.
Ewan McGregor almost steals the show as Obi-Wan. He has perfected this character and brings a great deal of warmth and humor to the part. His scene with Jango Fett (Termura Morrison) in Fett's apartment is a real "stare-down" and is reminiscent of classic westerns as the Jedi and the Bounty Hunter talk while trying not to give too much away.
All of the supporting cast are spot on. Christopher Lee oozes class as the Dark Jedi Count Dooku, Morrison brings a matcho-coolness to Jango Fett, Samuel L Jackson makes Mace Windu a very mysterious character and Ian McDairmid is his usual brilliant self as Palpatine.
The story is gripping and filled with absolute classic scenes - Obi-Wan's meeting with Dexter, the chase through Coruscant, the nightclub scene, Dooku and his allies, Yoda v Dooku, the battle in the arena, the battle on Geonosis, the Kaminonians, the clones, Obi-Wan v Jango, the asteroid chase, Anakin's confession, the death of Shmi, Padme and Anakin's kiss it's just great! I can't rave about it enough.
Of course some angry bitter little critics don't like Star Wars. So as Anakin says "Get back to your drinks, this is Jedi business!"
10 out of 10.
The Magicians (2000)
Average
The whole thing seems a bit half hearted. Only Kimberley Davies looks to be really puting the effort in. The rest of the cast are quite unbeliavable in their roles but the script lets them down badly.
I'd say that it's a film for kids, but then there are drug references and a sex scene so it's hard to work out who this film was aimed at.
