Wonderstruck (2017)

what is wrong with the people giving low ratings?
8 January 2018
This film was positively wonderful. I am dumbstruck at it's IMDB rating. For crying out loud it's a magical children's tale with a soundtrack that includes Brian Eno/Robert Fripp and 70s soul jams. It's disability-positive, the way the sound is done to convey deaf children navigating NYC is extremely creative and well done. The art and scenes are what I worshipped as a child - my greatest fantasy was to find a secret room in a museum and stay the night! And the dioramas and the incredible way they wove them into the storytelling! The people saying "nothing dramatic happens" are seriously off their rockers - a kid loses his hearing!!! two deaf children run away to NYC!!! how on Earth is that not dramatic? This film made me cry and laugh and feel like a child again. It's beautiful. If you have a child, watch it with them. If you don't, like me, watch it and feel like a kid again.

This movie is SO AWFUL lost ALL respect for Ben Stiller
11 November 2017
Honestly just lost all respect for Ben Stiller. This is the worst movie I have seen in so long I can't remember a worse film. I kept watching because I thought he was going to go into a crowd and mass murder people with a gun and this was a dark commentary on white male privilege. But I think this film was made because an AI algorithm told the studio it would make money because white men will relate to the fact that they have no gratitude, no empathy, no perspective, no actual compassion or insight for anyone except themselves. This movie was a complete and total nightmare. Actually now that I think about it, maybe it's the greatest horror film ever made: to think that so many men are out there with this horrid, sick, disgusting privileged mindset. EW. Just so much ew. This guy has everything any of us could ever hope for - much more than I'll ever have. I'll never have a spouse or children or a house or a business... or the ability to be a WHITE MALE who seriously complains about not being able to get 1st class on a plane or the best table in a restaurant. This normalizes sickness. This normalizes Trump. This is beyond grotesque.

omg so good

I am beyond baffled at this nonsensical 6 rating. wtf?? This is genius. This is cultures clashing, this is the study of sexism/racism/coming of age/culture is not your friend having it's DAY. this is gorgeous. It's like the realest episode of Skins (UK) ever. honestly just the scene where the kid makes a fake girlfriend and dances with it and humps it is absolutely NECESSARY and so cinematic it reminded me of when I used to make sweet love to my stuffed monkey Gargantua, which is the stuffed animal my grandma gave me before I was even born. This film is truth. This film is straight and gorgeous and it won me over in the first 3 minutes because that is exactly how I would parent. And I'm a 43 year old single, childless white woman. I love this film, this film is everything. Haters can suck it.

So essentially this girl had a DMT release.
19 November 2016
So, it's common that people attribute "near death" experiences to "seeing their sky daddy" because when you are near death/when you die you release dimethyltryptamine (DMT) the compound that is released in our brains when we dream. So we are able to experience a waking dream. So this girl experienced that. And they called it their neighborhood deity's fault. (Mind you, if she were in India it would be Shiva, if she were in Saudi it would be Allah, if she were in China it would be Buddha, etcetera. It's just whoever your local skydaddy is) The notion that this is "proof" of a skydaddy is freaking HORRIFIC considering what skydaddy would want a child to suffer for no reason in the first place? all so she can have a random accident and "get faith" - I mean wtf??? religious people are so freaking twisted it's beyond disturbing.

Absolutely baffled by the good reviews
28 August 2015
Look, I love Jake as much or more than the next guy - Nightcrawler was one of the best films ever - but this film is Insanely Boring. The entire story is a foregone conclusion. Every preview showed his wife getting shot so it's not a spoiler, so the only way this story develops or is interesting is what happens next. And what happens next is literally EXACTLY what you know is going to happen from the moment she's shot - from before you even stepped into the theater. Literally NOTHING happens that is remotely interesting or surprising. Complete waste of time, I have just no clue why I watched this movie. I ended up fast-forwarding the last ten minutes because why do I want to see a fake movie fight when I already know who wins? YAWN. BORING. Why on Earth do you people like this so much???

This is an excellent, unique film
17 June 2015
I'm repulsed at the moronic commentary on here. This movie is incredible. The only way to watch this is in the dark, with the sound all the way up. This is just amazing. Without any words an entire story is told. The use of light, of focus, of time... it is masterful. I think will be a sleeper. Only those who really appreciate beauty and magic will love this. The bird sounds and ambiance oftentimes reminded me of Herzog's Fitzcarraldo. This is an absolutely beautiful movie, I hope you see my review and not the jerks saying "it's boring, nothing happens" - omg, EVERYTHING HAPPENS. I was on the edge of my seat. The usage of sound is unparalleled. I actually feel the need to stress that I am in no way associated with filmmaking, I simply really appreciate this. It is Extremely Rare that an entire story is told vividly with atmospheric sound and visuals. Just a very special film. Do not miss.

Excellent film

Warning: Spoilers
I've been an IMDb member for 5 years now, as my profile will attest, and I have never written a review. I hardly ever even click the stars. Usually I'm in agreement, for the most part, with the IMDb community and don't feel I need to weigh in against the hundreds of thousands on here.

But I don't understand why this film has a 3.6 rating. And I think it's sad only 80 people have rated it.

We send so many men and women off to... "war" doesn't really say it, does it? hell? horrorshow? destroyed lives? eternal nightmares?

and we act like if they come back alive, they're fine and they just resume life.

PTSD is real. And it's deadly.

*SPOILER ALERT* (I guess I have to say that in order to say my point)

I think people rated this low because they wanted the happy Hollywood ending. Not the reality we live with. They wanted to see this guy have hope. Because they've never been in those shoes, and they can't imagine live without their privileges. They can't imagine everything shattering. I rated this film a 10 not because it couldn't have been done better. But because it was honest.

And because the reality is... it's the happiest ending he had.
