American Gangster (2007)
All blow and no go
This should've been an amazing film. It's more like the Russell Crowe show. I was expecting a gangster film about the rise of an incredibly intelligent, daring and merciless mafia style boss. What I got was a boring police drama with a bit of organised crime thrown in. I didn't give a damn about Crowe or Washington. It was flat. Considering Ridley Scott has some amazing films that hold you from beginning to end. He really dropped the ball on this one. The actors did not reach their potential in the slightest. There parts are well played but come across as being very one dimensional. They left their passion at home while filming. All I can really say is it's disappointing.
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Cheesy fun!
What an excellent fun filled horror film. If you want slick or arty cinema then you might want to leave your pretentious highbrow pseudo intellectual, wanna be film critic hats at the door. It's a stupid horror flick. But my goodness, it's great! It's an hour and a half of Nicholas Cage fighting possessed animatronic creatures. I have not enjoyed a film with such a thin premise as much as I've enjoyed this. It's put together well enough for it to be watchable and ultimately enjoyable. It's great that it doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest. If there had been a hint of it be a "serious" project it would have failed in being the masterpiece of lunacy it is.
After Midnight (2019)
Hold onto your socks...
Or they'll be bored off of you. I can't believe I've just sat through this film. The true horror in this is that the director believed it to be worth making. An unlikeable man mourns the loss of his girlfriend when she leaves him. Good grief! How she managed to see anything in him in the first place is a real mystery. The finest detectives of our time could not solve why they would've been together in the first place. A monster movie? The only monster here is the poor plot. Where's the tension? Is it meant to be some metaphor for lost love or is it just a tale of some loser who punched well above his weight and has a mental breakdown because she ran off when she realised how awful he is? I would say more but don't want to add spoilers in case some poor fool would actually like to watch this film.
The Forgotten (2014)
A haunting tale
If you want a gory slasher then this isn't for you. If however, you like a traditional unsettling ghost story then this is for you. The acting is superb, each character draws you in to the plot. You actually give a damn about each and every person involved. There's no annoying, spoiled teenagers or jock type males, just ordinary folk. The pace is such that it builds suspense and tension. The use of music is subtle and unobtrusive. There's no annoying or overly dramatic screaming or shouting, over use of unnecessary violence or terribly executed gore. I genuinely can't think of another modern day story of phantasms told in such a perfect way. Had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.
Feed the Devil (2015)
The devil wouldn't eat it.
Sadly not the best of Horror flicks. Although it is very well shot and quite atmospheric in its cinematography the story doesn't keep the viewer engrossed. The beginning is pretty standard and offers the glimpse of an exciting and rip-roaring tale of universal justice for those who dare follow the wrong moral path; however, we follow three unlikable people on their horrific journey. This is not as entertaining as it could be In many ways. The pace is incredibly slow with absolutely nothing to draw the viewer into the story. As is often the case with many of these films, the lead is such an unpleasant person you really don't care if he escapes or not. The ending was also rather unsatisfactory.
Aux (2018)
Don't waste your time.
Suspense, thrills, excitement, not in this film. I am sorry to say this is one of the worst films I've ever seen. The script was unbelievable, in the sense it was not remotely plausible and just shockingly bad. Despite having some good actors involved it appears they couldn't manage to breathe any life into this dreary film. The failure to develop any characters to any meaningful level meant there was no attachment to any of them. This lead to a lack of any feeing of suspense or any interest at all in their fate. It was a struggle to watch this film. I wasn't squirming with fear of a supernatural psychopath but of a fear it would never end. A good premise but very poorly executed.
