Nope (2022)
Lost its way
I knew nothing about this movie when I watched it today. Honestly, I had high expectations because of Peele's talent and intelligence; And it seemed really weird and interesting for a while, but it ground to a slow, confusing, and disappointing near halt and never regained momentum. I gave it 4 stars because I honestly enjoyed it for the first while.
If you like horses, motorcycles, old west shows, freaky sitcoms where bad things happen, a main character who is a pain and annoying, another main character who is really interesting, half good supporting actors which are good and half which are not, you'll like it.
Summer Rental (1985)
Candy and Carl epic fail
No spoilers are in this review except elements of the movie itself. It reeked of spoiled and poorly cooked crackpot ideas. Being a huge fan of this movie's star John Candy and of director Carl Reiner, I wish I could have enjoyed this so-called comedy. It didn't take long to see that it was a weak attempt to capitalize on the success of National Lampoon's Vacation.
Sadly, Candy's character's best qualities were a confused mish-mash of incompetent, pathetic, confused, annoying, callous and even unlikable. The writing and directing were a jumble of "Now let's have this problem happen and watch him make a mess of it" and 'More John, more! Yeah, that's hilarious!"
If that is your idea of comedy, enjoy!
Song of Love (1947)
If your a good pianist, don't expect...
Acting, script, good. However, it was foolish to use actor's hands pretending to play, especially Hepburn's hands, instead of a pianist's hands. Using professional pianist s for the views of the fingers is done sucessfully in many movies and shows. In fact, I've seen it in person done while I was an extra in a movie. Perhaps non-players are fooled? It's frustrating to be distracted by that unnecessary choice. A much more recent piano movie, The Competition, tried it and failed miserably, too. So, if you can't tell, enjoy! As for me, sadly, I had to fast forward through some piano playing scenes or look away from the carnage and just enjoy the fine recording. Oh, and if you happen to believe an actor can pull this off and actually learn to play these pieces, who isn't someone like Oscar Levant, you're sadly mistaken. Give concert pianists some credit, would you!
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Utterly JoyLESS! Should be ZERO stars.
Let's get right to the point. If you're a true fan of Abba, you cannot possibly like this. It's like karaoke night, listening to people (attempting to sing hits) who you normally respect for their true skills. However, they expect you to be charmed by their silliness, play-acting, and buddy-buddy "fun" (usually because they're drunk, but in this case it's due to huge egos and even bigger paychecks). I happen to appreciate the talents of Abba: composing, arranging, and performing well-crafted music. If you disagree, that's fine (though highly-trained musicians, like myself, recognize their skills, whether or not the style appeals to them). Therefore, I cannot like this movie. AND...if you don't like Abba, you don't like their songs and therefore cannot enjoy the movie. Simple, get it!?! I watched 15 minutes on video and got physically ill.
