Very average adaptation
15 November 2023
What bothered me the most is that the film doesn't respect the book. Some important passages are modified, others simply deleted while some other less important ones are present.

The pace is really slow, you fall asleep, you don't get the fun and appeal of the book.

Likewise, the relationship between Nicolas and Colin is quite far from the book and we don't really get attached to any character.

The casting is, however, quite good. Charismatic actors and pretty girls. However, we feel that they are not giving everything and could have better fit into their roles.

The book is difficult to understand, but this film even more so.

In short, not at all essential to see, even to see the universe in images since it does not represent the book at all.

Faithful to the book but very poor acting
23 September 2023
Condensing 50 hours of story into 5 hours of viewing is obviously very difficult.

The scenario is very faithful but certain scenes from the book useful for understanding are removed.

Overall, the acting is really bad. Weber as Dantès is terrible but makes up for it well in the role of the count, where he transcribes the great class and hidden emotions of the count, as described in the novel. Roger Dumas in Danglars also raises the average by perfectly interpreting the character as we imagine him.

The rest of the cast is terrible and seems to recite a text without any emotion, certain scenes become ridiculous and lose all the interest provided by reading the book.

I therefore strongly recommend reading the book before seeing the film, because without it, the experience will be tasteless, and will leave the impression of an old, uninteresting film, where prior reading will allow you to make the connection between the scenes and to enjoy the sets and costumes that put an image on the book.

Not bad but usual propaganda
15 February 2023
I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it for the first time at its release when I was younger.

Now, as my view of the world has evolved, I'm much more balanced.

The casting is correct without being incredible with the exception of Natalie Portman who is Exceptional.

Scenario is quite clumsy and easy, with a rather banal story of tyranny. Obviously we find there the usual propaganda to sell us the oppressed communities (I can't specify because of the exesive censorship policy on this website...).

Overall, this film still has a certain charm due to its original atmosphere and its fairly well-turned dialogues.
