Before the Dawn (2019)
Dull, over-complicated and questionable
Really did not particularly enjoy this film. It felt more like something you see on the Hallmark Channel than at the Indie Arthouse cinema - particularly during the "erotic" scenes.
The plot was far too complicated and at times seemed unrealistic - brother in jail, drug dealing (with the most cliche looking/talking gang ever). It was like they were trying to cram every single dramatic idea into one messy film. A lot of the reactions, particularly of the mother went totally out of character.
The two lead actors are probably the most beautiful people I've ever seen on screen and both seemed like they deserved a better script. Messy, unremarkable and forgettable.
Killer Bees (2002)
Film of the year
Everything about this film was brilliant. Original and dynamic dialogue and superb acting. The effects were typical LucasFilm quality (I presume they were involved). The heartbreaking flashback opener really set the tone, reminding me of the time when my own Dad was being attacked to death by insects and rather than grab a bucket of water I sat in the car. I particularly liked the representation if women in this film as helpless nags and shrews at in love with the sheriff. If I had to pick a stand up moment it could be when the air conditioners in the car malfunctioned with deadly consequences. Seriously loved it, it was really thrilling.
Overall I thought this was the best creature feature since Jaws...and actually it was even better than that because that only had one shark and this had millions of bees. Unmissable.
The Last Kiss (2006)
Big pretentious pile of crap!
This film was truly terrible! I have seen soap operas that convey human emotion more effectively.
Main problems 1. Lack of character development - We are supposed to care about these relationships when we know nothing about the people in them.
2. Sexism - all the women in this film nag, whine and seem 100% reliant on men 3. Overblown, badly acted emotional scenes - These scenes made me cringe and laugh in equal measure. Who likes having arguments? Why the hell would you want to spend your leisure time watching them 4. The end - it ends so abruptly and randomly! I cannot believe I wasted an hour of my life watching this film. People who say they like it have a serious case of the Emperor's New Clothes!
Open Water 2: Adrift (2006)
Well I liked it!
Gosh! There are so many bad comments about this film but I liked it! So many of the discussion topics are like ... ooh they should've done this or that to save themselves?! People are so cynical and need to realise that unless you are watching a documentary part of the cinematic experience requires you to suspend some logical beliefs! It's fiction!!! Anyway, the movie. I thought that it was like a slicker, more interesting version of the first one. Having more characters meant a lot more people to care about, and they also provided much stronger back stories and personalities for the characters - for most of the characters you want them to live or die - unlike the first one where you are not too fussed either way! The last 30 mins were so exciting that I was holding my breath! I almost wanted it to end faster so that I could find out the fate of the characters. I thought the movie was well paced and at no point did I feel bored.
I would definitely recommend this to you - just don't try and pick at every little 'what if'!!!
