9-1-1: Home Invasion (2022)
Underwhelming episode
Writen by Nadia Abass-Madden, who imo is one of the weakest writers the show has, so I expected this episode to miss the mark and I was right. Just not very engaging and blah.
The home invasion storyline started off good but then started to drag and fell flat towards the middle and end. Noah being the culprit was completely predictable and unoriginal. They literally just did basically the same thing with Jonah in 5B.
DIY home renovation gone wrong was whatever, nothing particularly interesting or impactful about it though I did enjoy the 2 second Buck and Eddie scene helping the girl fix her house they destroyed at the end.
Hen practical exam and Henren content was good but it's quite obvious where it's going. She's gonna be inspired by Karen and Denny being in danger next week to stay with the 118.
Bathena content decent, passing around Hoover was funny. Idk why they didn't just make him the firehouse dog but whatever.
Madney content good, the overbearing nanny thing is nothing that hasn't been done before though.
118 party nice but rushed and and weird shift tonally.
Final scene was a good hook for next week.
Just overall a lackluster episode (as I said, as expected) that was mostly filler with dry plots, meh acting, and lacking in creativity and originality. Hope next week is better and it looks like it will be.
9-1-1: The Devil You Know (2022)
Pretty decent, but not my favorite
Really good Bathena content, which I always love.
I honestly was not as excited for this episode as other ones. Part of the reason I like 9-1-1 is it has a fantastic ensemble cast so while I get why they choose 2 or 3 characters to focus on in an episode sometimes, I feel like completely excluding the others is not the way to go. They could've easily given us a 5 minute or less scene of the trouble Buck, Eddie, Hen, and Chim are getting into in LA with Bobby away then have them leave for a routine call without really sacrificing much from the overall Florida plot.
With that, I also don't want this to turn into a police procedural. There's too many of those kinds of shows and 9-1-1's brand is wacky and insane emergencies so a garden variety murder mystery case, while interesting, is quite a tonal shift. I also didn't feel that they really did a great job of reinforcing that this is why Athena chose to become a cop, which is what the stated purpose was. I quite honestly don't really care that much about what it meant for Athena's parents. They're barely on the show.
Some of the guest actors' acting was quite weak and the first half of the episode kinda dragged imo.
But the Bathena scenes made up for it so it's okay I guess.
I did also appreciate a story about a missing little Black girl (happens far too often in this country) being written by Lyndsey Beaulieu, a strong, independent Black woman.
Decent enough conclusion to this saga, now let's get Bobby and Athena back to LA where they belong!
9-1-1: Crash & Learn (2022)
Decent overall
Juan Carlos Coto wrote and directed this episode and it showed. He's very good about throwing in subtle character moments and there were plenty of them here. The firefam scenes were to die for!
I liked that they kinda mixed up who was interacting with who, since we see a lot of Hen/Chim, Buck/Eddie, etc. Buck and Hen's friendship is great and you can tell he really admires her and looks to her for guidance. And she, despite going through some really tough stuff in this episode, took the time to give him good advice- he has to discover what happiness means for him on his own and can't rely on others for validation, something he's always struggled with. I'm curious where they'll take his storyline, as I presume it's gotta be somewhat big to be going so meta and deep. I have an idea about where it may go but we'll see if it comes to fruition.
Eddie and Chim didn't really have a storyline in this episode but I liked the locker scene where it was clear that they were worried about their respective partners/best friends but still wanted to give them space. Juan Carlos Coto tweeted that the little look Eddie gave Chim to signal him to ask Buck if he wants to go to breakfast too was Ryan and Kenny's idea and made the whole scene work, which I agree it did, as it served as reinforcement of their care and respect and then was a nice segue into the Buck/Hen conversation.
I just love Hen and Karen, they love each other so much and are so supportive of each other. I think it's pretty obvious Hen is gonna choose to stay a paramedic over med school, as I don't see any way she'd be able to remain a main character on the show otherwise. I look forward to seeing more of her/their storyline, and as always it was great to see Denny.
The Bobby and Athena in Florida plot is kinda interesting and it looks like next episode will be only about them which is cool. I just hope they focus more on their relationship than the actual solving the crime thing, as it seems pretty obvious Junior's dad did it. This isn't a police procedural and really shouldn't be treated as such imo. There are plenty of those kinds of shows out there.
Maddie helping the new recruit in the call center was nice though I don't really see a point to his character yet. I guess just a young replacement for May since she went off to college?
My only real criticism of this episode is that the build up to the emergencies, especially the love tunnel one, was WAY too long and wasted precious screentime. I believe I saw they had to cut some of the happiness convention stuff which actually served a purpose in Buck's storyline so I wasn't happy (see what I did there lol) about that. Yes this is an emergency show, but the emergencies are really only interesting in so far as they have action/suspense and/or play a significant role in the character storylines imo.
Overall a decent episode that covered a lot. If they cut back on the extraneous emergency build up details a little bit they'll be golden.
9-1-1: Let the Games Begin (2022)
A strong start to the season
After the mess that was season 5 I was a little worried this season would be a repeat but based on what I saw in this episode it seems like it'll be much better. A lot was going on, but every core character got a good amount of screentime and the balance between the calls and the character stories felt quite good.
I honestly expected more from the blimp emergency with the way they hyped it up. The call only lasted until like the first commercial break and there's no way a blimp crashes into a stadium and only 2 people get injured. But whatever. The other smaller calls were classic dumb 9-1-1 cases so that was nice and light.
For the character stories:
Buck- Trying to prove he has what it takes to be interim captain was kinda funny but also cringey and I don't really think he's actually ready for it. Loved the couch metaphor and the domestic dinner scene with Eddie and Chris, as well as his conversation with Bobby. I'm curious where they'll go with it from here and Oliver is being incredibly vague about it
Eddie and Chris- Didn't have too much of a storyline but I will say there were some interesting choices made. It seems they intentionally tied them to the Buck couch metaphor by having them be who first bring it up and talk to Buck about it and the associative use of them playing Boggle in both the dinner scene and then again at the end in which the shot immediately cuts to Buck looking at the empty couch location. I know Eddie's storyline is gonna be about learning to let go as Chris gets older and wants more independence so I'm curious where this is going.
Bobby- At first I was like noooo Cap what are you thinking wanting to make Lucy interim captain over Chim or Hen?? But then there was that really nice scene at the end between Bobby and Hen that sort of explained it. Him trying to busy himself with every detail of the cruise because he's still struggling makes me feel for him so hard.
Athena- Nice chat with Hen and cute scene with May going off to college. I'm so scared for her parents and can't wait to see what next week's episode brings.
Hen- So excited for her to be interim captain, she deserves it. But I hope she doesn't get burnt out with that plus family plus med school. I imagine that will be a focus next week and in the coming episodes. Sad we didn't get to see Karen on screen but they have a big episode coming up that I'm super excited for.
Maddie and Chim- Hit me right in the feels and I'm so glad they're back together and working things out. Though they didn't go to couples' therapy like the synopsis said, I thought they handled everything very well.
Lucy- I guess she's not gonna be in the first half of the season and honestly she doesn't really need to come back at all imo. She adds nothing to the show and I still don't understand the obsession with forcing her character in.
Ravi- Also probably isn't gonna be in the first half of the season. Little mad they didn't even mention him in the episode but Lucy got a detailed explanation about why she won't be around.
Loved seeing the call center crew too (sad about no Linda though and I honestly am not a fan of the new call center setup it feels a little too bare and sterile imo) and I'm curious what role the new recruit Noah will play since he's mentioned in the synopsis for next week.
Overall a solid episode and an excellent start to the season! And great writing by veteran show writer Andrew Meyers and veteran director Jann Turner!
9-1-1: Starting Over (2022)
Understated finale with some nice moments
I will say if I didn't know this was supposed to be a season finale, I wouldn't have known, it felt like any other episode to me.
Definitely had some pacing issues, the calls took up way too much time and some of the main character stories felt rushed. They spent a lot of money on pushing a firetruck off a cliff just for it to not have any impact on the storyline whatsoever. That ate up a good 15 min of screentime. Then the couple that was in the car accident actually was overall cute but their backstory montage probably didn't need to be included as that ate up another 10 or so min. The hair salon call was just completely unnecessary and unoriginal imo, maggots are nothing this show hasn't done before. If there was one episode we didn't need an abundance of calls it was this one.
Dissecting the character story wrap ups:
-Madney: Overall done well, they're not ready to get back together but eventually they will. I look forward to seeing them working on their relationship next season.
-Henren: Really good, I love that Toni apologized to Karen and made things right by giving her the family wedding ceremony she never got. Super short scene though I would've liked to see more of it.
-BuckTaylor: Done and over, FINALLY. This was definitely a dead in the water relationship and their breakup was long overdue. So glad Buck was the one to do it. Don't understand the point of the cheating since the breakup was all about their incompatible moral views in the end. Big mistake there.
-Speaking of Lucy: Quite obvious they want her to stay but I think they're undecided since the fans and general audience still don't really like her/care about her.
-Eddie is in a much better place for himself and his conversation with Bobby was so needed and great, if not a little rushed. Bobby scared himself by almost relapsing and I really hope they don't go down a relapse route for him.
-Maddie back at dispatch. I think they definitely missed an opportunity for her to talk with Eddie, they have a lot in common and share a close link in Buck.
-Chimney back to his normal self. He still seems to have some animosity towards Buck which I hope they explore more next season. Good to see him teasing Albert and funny reference to John Harlan Kim joining LA Law
-Ravi was great as always
-Bathena honeymoon cruise that almost certainly will end in disaster next season
-And can I just say there were some pretty pointed Buddie references in this episode... "You're the guy who likes to fix things" reference while patching up Eddie's wall, Buck's conversation with Maddie sounded an awful lot like he was describing his relationship with Eddie, Ravi saying what we all want in a partner is someone who has our back, which is what Buck and Eddie said to each other after their first call together way back in season 2. They definitely are doing it on purpose and I just hope they come to their senses and realize it's the best possible option
Overall a somewhat lackluster episode but the mains are all definitely ready to start anew and there's a clean slate which I think was sorely needed.
9-1-1: Hero Complex (2022)
Not the best but not the worst either
I'm not gonna lie, I expected this episode to be a little better than it was. There were some good parts but overall it's not my favorite episode and I think there were some better ones this season.
Good parts: -Hen and Chim, these 2 always kill it together, their close friendship is one of the main pillars of the show. -Eddie finally getting some stuff off his chest and nearing the completion of his healing arc. -Bobby feeling guilty for hiring Jonah and holding himself responsible, he already carries so much guilt with him all the time I hope this doesn't cause him to spiral. -Buck just sitting there playing with a dinosaur while Eddie packed (Chris wasn't even in this episode lol) he knew he needed to be there to morally support Eddie and I just love these little scenes of them supporting each other.
Meh parts: -Jonah kinda became like a mustache-twirling villain which ok it's TV I know it needs to be more dramatic but still. Nonetheless the scenes with Jonah were still quite intense. -Lucy and Ravi were just kinda there, they each only said about 2 lines (sidenote but Arielle Kebbel is really not impressing me with her line deliveries and I really don't think Lucy adds anything to the show but that's a whole different thing).
Bad parts: -Everything having to do with Taylor. Get her off this show I can't take it anymore. She sucks and should've left in 5A. -Maddie was only in this episode for like 5 seconds and has barely been present in the other 5B episodes besides Boston. Like wth she comes back just for us to barely see her??? -The Eddie storyline fell a little flat for me like it didn't seem to fit in this episode at all and it seemed kinda like a rushed conclusion with kind of an undeserving redemption of his father imo.
This episode was written by Stacey Rose (writer of Ghost Stories, the worst rated episode ever) and Kristen Reidel (just ugh). Not the writing team I would've picked for an important penultimate episode but I guess it got the job done and like I said there were some things that were good.
9-1-1: May Day (2022)
Excellent episode
This episode really had everything:
-Bathena content (Papa Bear Nash... aw)
-May standing up to Claudette
-Josh and Carson the electrician, they seemed really cute together I hope we hear snippets about them being in a relationship in the future Josh deserves to be happy
-Josh/Eddie sass
-Linda/Eddie friendship, a friendship we didn't know we needed
-Sue back at dispatch
-Eddie saving Terry and the others and affirming he's meant to be a firefighter
-Bobby saving May, so glad he got to save his family this time
-Buck and Eddie working together again they make such a great team
-The whole 118 coming together to save Bobby
-Chimney and Albert content, Chimney giving him his blessing to quit and pursue something that'll make him happy was bittersweet (I wish all the best to John Harlan Kim as I assume this means he's leaving the show)
-Hen suspecting Jonah is evil (RIP Claudette) I kinda wondered if they were going that direction and it looks like they are--now it makes sense why they didn't hype his character at all compared to Lucy they wanted to keep this twist under wraps
-Karen! Love her and I'll take any screentime with her I can get
There were only a couple things I didn't like:
-Taylor and Lucy's conversation didn't make any sense to me--Buck and Lucy have barely interacted, I definitely think they've been cutting her scenes after the backlash so this just seems like it came from out of nowhere since all of the buildup scenes were probably cut. Buck literally couldn't have cared less, he glanced over at them and then went right back to talking to Eddie and he didn't speak to Taylor once the entire episode. I'm so over this storyline, NO ONE likes it and I don't understand where they want to go with it
-No Ravi
Overall a really solid action packed, character driven episode. Kudos to Corrine Massiah for a standout performance and kudos to Juan Carlos Coto for writing and directing it!
9-1-1: FOMO (2022)
Pretty good
Most parts of this episode I genuinely enjoyed--Henren and Bathena scenes, Eddie and May's friendship, the calls were decent and the last one was really emotional.
Lucy needs to go, she's bringing absolutely nothing to the table. There was no point to her being in this episode, she didn't do or say anything significant the entire time and the things she did say were so rude! I don't understand what they're trying to do with her character and I'm just over it.
Missed Ravi, Albert, Chris, etc. In this episode. I hope they get more screentime in the last 3 episodes.
Overall this episode kinda felt like filler before May Day, which I think they're plugging as their big episode for 5B. Nothing super significant happened plot wise but we got some good character tidbits and interactions.
Heartstopper (2022)
Masterpiece
I really didn't know what to expect, as usually adaptations of print work just don't turn out very good. But I was just stunned and blown away by how good this is. They did everything right.
Casting? Perfect. Most, if not all, of the actors are actually part of the LGBTQ community or are steadfast allies. Joe Locke knocks it out of the park in his debut acting role, as does Kit Connor and the rest of the cast. How they landed Oscar winner Olivia Colman to play Nick's mom idk but she was amazing as always. Shoutout to Stephen Fry for his voice cameo as well.
Storytelling? Superb. Alice Oseman is such a good writer, she handles everything with such poise and care, even the tough topics. I'm so glad she was the producer and wrote the screenplay. Where the show deviates from the comics, it's the not so significant parts to the plot, and the added content works well and flows naturally. It's nice to see characters like Elle, Tara, Darcy, Tao, etc. Get more development than in the comics, and they bring excellent representation.
Pacing? Great. The only episode I felt was a little off pacing wise was the first episode but they found their footing for the rest of the season after that.
This is just such a wholesome, uplifting, feel-good show that depicts such important characters and relationships. I really really hope it gets more seasons, it deserves it. The fans deserve it.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: The End Game (2015)
Kind of underwhelming
I watched this series probably much younger than I should have and I have fond memories. Just finished rewatching on Hulu and I must say this was really kind of an underwhelming series finale. The only good scenes were Nick's emotional farewell to Sara to Greg ("I respect and love you both"), the 3 characters who were the only reason I watched the last 4 seasons, and him symbolically placing the Solved magnet over his name on the cases board. The Gig Harbor Killer storyline was incredibly boring and I just could not care less about it.
