The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024)
Infantile writing
Not sure why, but the writing from episode 4 became so infantile, so corny ("we have to stop them, because we can") and other laughable examples ("the world is broken, and you're the only one that can put it back together")
The walking dead gave itself little wriggle room early on by creating a basic formula and never deviating from it. Survive and move, hunker down until this season's bad guy makes us move. Beat the big bad, then hunker down again. No attempt at a solution or a cure or forming anything more, nothing to strive for except "don't die"
"The ones who live" follows more or less the same pattern, just with soap opera writing and fewer characters that we can care about. I sat through it, largely because there was nothing else I wanted to watch at that time, but it wasn't worth the wait.
Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood (2023)
Gave up
I gave up on this after about half an hour. It's slow, acting is strained and everything is over-delivered, as if the actors are trying to add gravitas to every line, make everything seem important.
It takes about twice as long to get anywhere than is needed, every moment feeling stretched out to near breaking point.
The cinematography is strange, often with parts out of focus in a distracting way. The vocals feel seperated from the characters, like a poorly dubbed vocal track.
All in all I had to give up, with no sense that.it was going to suddenly get any better. Hugely disappointing as I was looking forward to this.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Shouldn't be this good
A musical episode of Star Trek? Why not?
When the cast suddenly burst into song, and I had a "once more with feeling" moment, I was ready for this to be corny and painful. But just a few minutes in and it's just too good to put it down.
In a lovely nod to "that" episode of Buffy, and an awareness of the age of a lot of their Star Trek fans, there's even mention of bunnies. It must be bunnies.
The music here is wonderful, the singing is great, the cast clearly enjoying making it work so well, throwing themselves in with abandon. Just go with it and enjoy. Loving this new season.
I think I'll rewatch this episode again.
From (2022)
Best of its type
If you liked lost, and under the dome, check out this far superior offering. Well written, well paced and spooky as hell. Not afraid to get messy (those monsters are very nasty).
However the most scary thing about this show is that having developed a great story, great plot, great world building, it will get cancelled, or worse still, an unsatisfying ending "lost" style.
Never the less, it's well worth a look and if it pulls you in like it did me, you'll have fun binge watching this surprising and gruesome "peoplestuckunderadomeandlostininexplicablesituations" show.
All I ask from the producers is please, finish it properly, don't overstay your welcome, and give us a meaningful and satisfying finale. Too much to ask?

Absolute rubbish, even the worst of Jurassic park is better than this disaster.
Pretty much every creative choice, every idea here, is utterly wrong. As a story its old and been done before and far better than here. The acting is wooden, the effects are cut and pasted from other better movies, basically this is an insult to movie making.
If you're going to make a movie about dinosaurs you'd better make damn sure you do at least a passable job when held up to any, even the bad ones, of the Jurassic park movies. And for gods sake if you're going to stick a space man in the time of the dino's, give him more tech, more to do than run around being chased by small beasties holding a gun ( the big beasties don't show up until the end and then only briefly) Where have we seen that before? Maybe every single JP movie?
So yes, it's truly awful, wait for streaming awful and even then don't bother awful. I slept through large parts of it. Even the whole dad/daughter thing was totally crippled by her lack of language and the lack of chemistry.
In short, it should never have seen the light of day, and was a complete waste of my time. At least the recliners in the cinema were comfy.
D-Railed (2018)
Well worth a watch
I put this on after the family went to bed with little expectations. I was really surprised how well it was done. The acting was mostly solid and the story plays out like a bit of twilight zone here, monster mash there, heist movie in places. The script works for the most part and sometimes seems like a stage play with how long the lines are and how much is asked of the actors. In today's movie world where the camera jumps every two seconds and no one has to remember a line more than five words long, this is quite refreshing. There's various levels of acting ability here and Lance Hendrickson is barely in it, probably having shot his scenes in one day, possibly before lunch.
There's one genuinely nasty moment, and plenty that are a bit cringeworthy, but the commitment and energy from all involved is very clearly on display and I enjoyed watching it.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Wong Direction
When the best thing about a show is the characters brought in from another show, you know you're in trouble. Even our titular heroine accepts that, lazily breaking the fourth wall to tell us what's going on because we can't work it out ourselves and the writers can't be bothered to get it across in the storytelling.
The talented and versatile Ms Maslaney is largely wasted in this poorly executed and poorly thought out talk show. Her insipid and underwritten character welcomes guest performers with fuller back stories each week almost as if the producers know there'd be nothing to see here without them (there wouldn't) any potential to say something new or bring anything fresh to the table has been left somewhere else, perhaps for better programmes leaving us with this lightweight fluff piece that will undoubtedly be quickly forgotten along with that other marvel property from a while back, the one with the lady with red hair that moves, can't remember it's name.
So basically, someone thought this would be a great idea, then no one kept an eye on things, and it went in totally the wong direction ;-)
House of the Dragon (2022)
Off cuts
Plays like a side quest to a game you used to really enjoy, and you revisit the "lite" version for a bit of nostalgia whilst waiting for the next big thing. Lacking in so many of the qualities that made GOT compelling, it's hard to see a good reason for this to last long.
Perhaps it will pick up over time, but so far appears to be little more than "B" versions of previous characters arguing over trivialities. There's only so much talking heads around tables can keep you entertained. Eventually the heavy handed growling and posturing grows tiresome. Perhaps it is the source material that is at fault but better choices would have elevated this beyond the sense that we are attending a lengthy meeting to discuss things that will be interesting at a later date. Just not any time soon.
Star Trek: Picard: Monsters (2022)
I remember when Star Trek was fun.
Someone thought it a great idea to spend ages delving into the psychology of Jean luc Picard. They were wrong. I'm waiting for this to become fun again.
Star Trek: Picard: Watcher (2022)
Filler
Bit of a time waster this ep. Not much happens of any note. The story doesn't move forwards and much time is wasted on a car chase of all things. You could skip this and it wouldn't affect anything. A resounding "meh" from me, and I love star trek generally.
Halo (2022)
Ticking the boxes
I think the biggest disappointment here is that there's nothing new to see. It's not gritty or different, stylish or original. Mostly shot from a distance with passable special effects. No slow motion, no close up action, no clever camera work and no surprises. The story is borrowed from any other series you care to mention. There was an opportunity here to do something special and sadly, it just feels very generic. Perhaps later episodes will change that.
Star Trek: Discovery: Coming Home (2022)
Great star trek.
This season has been a bit too self indulgent for my tastes. Too often too emo. I miss the days when deanna troi would sense "fear" and then the rest of them would get on with kicking the snot out of the enemy of the week. But overall this has been a great season and lots of fun. Looking forward to the next season 🙏
Star Trek: Discovery: Rosetta (2022)
Oh come on....
For a highly trained space exploration team on a critical mission the crew of discovery can really be a bunch of big girls blouses. Seriously, if you could stop being so emo for just a minute and get on with saving the galaxy that would be great. Anytime. I'll wait.
Star Trek: Discovery: All Is Possible (2021)
Can't....stay....awake....
The total lack of urgency despite the presence of a new and unknown galaxy level threat hovering outside the window is a yawnfest. It's like they took a holiday from important stuff and crowbarred in a "Tillyexitepisode".
So I'll try to stay awake and get through to the next ep. Here's hoping.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
Some movies just go...wrong.
It has the components, the potential, but sometimes things just don't come together.
Here the pacing, the editing, the direction just leave an incoherent jumble of unrelated scenes. I don't know what went wrong, studio interference, last minute changes after poor test audience responses? A shame as some individual scenes actually work quite well.
Reacher (2022)
Yes. Thankyou.
Finally a Reacher, and a series, worthy of the name. Alan Ritchson, though a little too clean cut, too college football, is a very believable Protagonist. The writers remain true to the stories, bringing to life something we've been left to imagine for ourselves as we've read and read every Jack Reacher novel since the start. Thankyou, been a long wait.
The Silent Sea (2021)
Loved it.
The Korean approach to what will be very familiar to fans of sci fi action is refreshing and just original enough to keep you guessing. B movie moments don't detract from the overall solid and entertaining display of Seouliwood in action.
