I really liked the first 45 minutes due to its absurdity. The right balance was struck between two genres- it was both a romantic comedy and a dark horror show. For a teen movie, I felt that there was an adult quality, as the young characters are reflecting on their lives and anticipating that they will soon spontaneously explode. Between all the gory scenes, there were some laughs and a true heart with Mara and Dylan's courtship.
The second half of the movie was excruciatingly painful to sit through, especially since Dylan is killed off. All we saw was Mara drinking copious amounts of alcohol, disappointing her parents, and moping around town. It had such a juvenile tone near the end, that the whole theme of "carpe diem" was completely abandoned. The ball was really dropped with this screenplay- it could have been a spectacular teen romp.
I feel like the writers aimed for a metaphorical angle as opposed to articulating a clear story. What caused these spontaneous explosions and why did it only impact the one school's senior class? Was it just a biological phenomenon or was this also part of some supernatural curse? Exploring those questions is what would have held my attention longer, but unfortunately, we never got an answer.
