Did I miss something?
4 December 2002
When I finished watching this film I was flooded with wonder. I wondered; Did I miss something? Did I fall asleep at some point(several some points)? Was I abducted? It felt like at the end of each scene, someone forwarded through the next scene, then pushed play again. Something about this film is lost on me here. If it was "great" then I need to understand more about greatness. I give it 6 of 10 (not 10 from 6; Bad Company).

Are we not men?

First of all...Bela Lugosi is completely amazing as The Sayer of The Law. As small as his part is, it adds to the overall quality of the film by and far. He is definitely the most quotable, and perhaps memorable character in this installment. Second of all...Charles Laughton might well be the most versatile and most despicable player of the villain in history. He pulled off some great heel characters. The Island of Lost Souls, in my opinion, would be his second best performance (Captain Bligh; Mutiny on The Bounty #1).

Finally this is one of my favorite films, and easilly the best of Moreau. I did not read the H.G. Wells novel, and do not care how faithful any film is to the origional work. Judged simply as a film this is about as good as they come.

Two classic actors put forth 2 classic performances. Three thumbs up!!!

Hoop Dreams (1994)

Never would have watched it, but couldn't walk away.

This was on T.V. last night. I was waiting for Seinfeld reruns to start and stopped here to pass the nxt 30 mins till Seinfeld. Hoop Dreams just began. I'd heard of it, but it didn't sound interesting at all. The problem here was that I became so interested in seeing how the lives of these two boys turned out, that I totally forgot about Seinfeld. Oh well, it's on 14 times a week locally. Hoop Dreams was very interesting. I loved it.

Excellent!

I loved the book by Dumas, and the movie was totally different. That's what made it so great. Often great books don't faithfully adapt to great movies. They're totally different forms of entertainment, and many book lovers need to realize this. I love reading, but generally to make a great book into a good movie, many liberties often need to be taken. (First Blood, Lord of The Rings, The Shining,...). It is possible to love a book and still enjoy a movie that is loosely based on said book. I give this one 7.5 out of 10!! -Tim
