Lacks suspense and scares
5 October 2021
This movie lacks the suspense and scare you would expect from a vampire movie. Nicole Maines did a good job and stood out amongst the stiff acting from her costars. There was no character development and I found myself not caring whether or not any of them survived. In fact, when the ancient vampire Vlad appeared towards the end, I got excited and thought something interesting was going to happen. Unfortunately, as fast as he appeared, he was gone. I gave this movie three stars because the movie looked good.

Reboot Camp (2020)
8/10
Charming indie find
15 June 2021
I stumbled across the trailer to this on my friend's Facebook page. The trailer was funny and the rental was only $4 so I decided to rent it. Reboot Camp was not what I expected. It's a mockumentary. I DO NOT like mockumentaries. Had I read the post after watching the trailer, I would've known and would not have rented it. That being said, it was not bad at all. I found myself laughing a lot. Ed Begley Jr. From Bless This Mess and Lindsey Shaw from Pretty Little Liars really stood out. Begley's deadpan face cracked me up every time he was on the screen and Shaw's portrayal of ditzy Maisey was spot on. I give this movie 7 1/2 stars because I just don't like mockumentaries but there are no half stars so I'm rounding up to 8. There are enough trolls out there giving movies 1 star for no reason at all.

Kajillionaire (2020)

Don't watch if looking for a comedy!
15 June 2021
This movie is on HBO Now. I had never heard of it before so I googled to see what it was about. It's categorized as a comedy crime drama. Premise sounded interesting. It had a good cast and the title "Kajillionaire" sounded like it would be funny so I decided to watch it. NOT ONCE DID I LAUGH. This movie is as slow as snail mail and very bizarre. I kept watching hoping that it would pick up and get funnier. It never did. However, the acting was superb. I would expect nothing less from this cast. This is drama. I gave it 7 stars because it was well made and the acting was great. I took off two stars because I did not find it funny at all and the story uninteresting.

A must watch for hopeless romantics and rom com lovers!
15 June 2021
I am a total homeless romantic. I LOVE watching romantic comedies. I watch almost all the ones I come across, whether they are showing in a theater, on the Hallmark Channel or streaming on Netflix, Hulu, etc. They all follow pretty much the same formula. Boy and girl meet, fall in love, break up and get back together. The right cast and execution is what makes a great romantic comedy. Most are just ok but some just hit it out of the park. So when I come across a romantic comedy that hits every mark perfectly, I have to share it with the world.

Crazy Rich Asians is a perfectly executed rom com with an all Asian cast. I was a fan of Constance Wu from ABC's Fresh Off the Boat but when I saw her in the trailer, I wasn't quite sure if she was the right actor to play the female lead in a feature film. She proved me wrong! Wu's portrayal of the American born Chinese Rachel Chu was spot on. Her love interest Nick Young played by Henry Golding, who I and most of the world had not heard of until he was cast in this movie, had me swooning whenever his down to earth from a privileged family character came on screen. Awkwafina, Ken Jeong and Jimmy O. Yang's vibrant characters brought just the right amount of comedy to this film. The location, cinematography, wardrobe, set design and music were superb. The wedding scene in particular was spectacular. I want to attend a wedding of that caliber! The cover of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love" and the Chinese version of Coldplay's "Yellow" were so beautiful that I had to buy them. I have seen it several times now since it's on HBO Now and I still need to have a box of Kleenex next to me. Don't be deterred from watching this movie because of its all Asian cast. You will not be disappointed.

As a reference, I am naming my top 10 favorite romantic comedies of all time below, in no particular order, so you can see if we have the same taste in films.

1. How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days 2. While You Were Sleeping 3. To All The Boys I've Loved Before 4. Pretty Woman 5. Housesitter 6. 10 Things I Hate About You 7. The Kissing Booth 8. Overboard (1987) 9. Father of the Bride (1991) 10. Romancing the Stone.

The Swordsman (2020)
9/10
Wow!!!
4 June 2021
I hate reading subtitles so you won't find me paying to watch a foreign film unless the trailer really gets my attention. And to pay to watch a foreign film? Nah. Well, The Swordsman's trailer looked so good that I had to fork out some money to rent.

The action/sword fighting in this movie was beautifully choreographed. The production design, costumes, photography and acting were all excellent. I took off one star for lack of character development. Although Jang Hyuk did an excellent job of portraying Tae-yul (The Swordsman), I would've liked to know more about his character and see more interaction between him and his daughter, Tae-ok, to really feel that father-daughter connection. Overall, The Swordsman was entertaining and well worth the rental fee. Those into sword fighting will definitely enjoy this movie.

Why all the negative reviews?
4 June 2021
When I see Milla Jovovich in a movie, I expect to see action and lots of VFX. I was in the mood for a Milla Jovovich type of action movie and that's what I got. Monster Hunter is lacking some comedic breaks that would have helped to make the movie more entertaining but I don't think It's a bad movie either. Had this movie not been released during a pandemic, I think it would've done much better in the box office.

Must watch for any zombie fan!!!
4 June 2021
First off, you should know that I don't like to watch foreign films because I hate reading subtitles and I only go to theaters 5-10 minutes away from where I live. When I watched the trailer for Train to Busan, I knew I had to see it in a theater. The day it came out in the U. S., I drove 20 minutes to the only theater showing Train to Busan. I was not disappointed at all. The theater was packed. Train to Busan kept me literally on the edge of my seat. I found myself on an emotional roller coaster ride while watching this perfectly executed action packed zombie movie. I was so invested because the characters were so well developed. (Make sure to have tissue handy when watching this movie because I was not the only one crying during the movie, I could hear sniffling all around me in the theater.) I recommended this movie to my cousin who also loves zombie movies. She was hesitant about driving half an hour to see it but I convinced her to go. I got a big thank you text from her after they left the theater. She said it was well worth the drive. I have since watched this several times at home and I still cry but I just love this movie!

If you are into zombie movies, you MUST watch this. If I had to rank my top 3 favorite zombie movies with 1 being the highest/best, they would be as follows.

#1 Train to Busan #2 Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead #3 28 Days Later

This is the only foreign film that I've watched in a theater as of today. Note that I always find fault in almost every movie I watch. I could not find anything wrong with this movie. I was, however, very sad that a character was killed off to the point of crying like a leaky faucet. And even so, I still can't say that it should've ended differently.
