One Tree Hill (2003)
Should have ended with season 7
This show started out really well, and got better with each season. It was one of my favorite shows. Until season 8. From season 8 and on, I've been embarrassed to admit that I still watch this show.
The characters Chase, Quinn, Clay and Alice are pointless. I have no interest in any of their stories. I miss the core OTH group and the relationships between them. That group of friends gave the show its heart and soul. There are so many new characters on this show that it lost its intimacy and charming nature. The show now seems shallow and dull.
Also, to the writers - please stop using the phrases "you know that" and "you goof," as in "I love you, you know that" and boyfriends/girlfriends referring to each other as "you goof". It's no longer cute, and it is bordering somewhere between extremely annoying and downright obnoxious. I cringe every single time I hear these phrases.
I gave this show a 7, which would have been a 10 if it had ended with season 7... and would have been a 2 if it had started with season 8.
UPDATE: Season 9 makes up for the crappiness of season 8. Stick it out. You wont regret it. I'm raising my rating to an 8.
Melissa & Joey (2010)
It has potential
I've watched every show Melissa has ever been in, and I've enjoyed all of them. However, so far her character on Melissa and Joey is a little over the top. I think the character needs to be toned down a little, in many different areas. First, Melissa is a beautiful girl. Why cover her face in what appears to be clown make up? Second, the outfits she wears are a little bit too "Soap Opera." I've never seen politicians dressed like that in real life. And third, the character is somewhat annoying. She's way too loud, and her lines seem just a little to "snappy," and unnatural. She sounds like how you would expect someone to sound after drinking 4 pots of coffee. I know that none of this is the fault of the actress, because I've seen her other shows, and her characters have all been played really well. I think the show has potential, and I like the storyline so far... Melissa's character (and even Joey's to a degree) just need to be toned down.
Stay (2005)
A brilliant film about a young man near death
It's hard to comment on this film without including a spoiler, but I feel it is necessary to try because of all of the unwarranted bad reviews this film is receiving. If you go into it expecting to see a rendition of The 6th Sense, you might be disappointed. If you go into it expecting to see a logical plot with a chronological story behind it and an honest portrayal of developed characters, you will be disappointed and very confused.
However, if you go see this film with an open mind and simply EXPERIENCE what it has to offer, you will be rewarded greatly at the end - assuming, of course, that you understand what you have just seen, at least to some degree. For the best experience, pay attention to the little details, but don't try to figure anything out until the end. See it with someone so that you can discuss it afterward. It's that good.
This movie is visually appealing and artistically constructed - pleasing to both the eye AND to the mind.
Oh My God (2004)
The summary above couldn't be stated any simpler
Just saw this film at the Sundance Film Festival. I have no idea how it made it all the way to Sundance given the professionalism of the films it was shown with and the... uh... lack of professionalism of itself, but it was definitely hilarious. It had a nice lesson at the end, too. Just remember while watching it that the story IS going somewhere, and it's not just random ridiculous chaos. The creator of this film said that his inspiration came from his brother, who in fact, gave him the entire script of the movie. Bryant felt that it was the worst idea he had ever heard, so he decided to make it. If you're looking for a serious film, this is not the one for you. If you're looking for entertainment - kill bill style - definitely worth watchin.
West Bank Story (2005)
Musical comedy revolving around the romance between an Israeli and a Jew
This film is hilarious! I just returned from the Sundance Film Festival, which is where I saw the film, and it got a great response from everyone in the audience. The cheers at the end were so loud, I was actually expecting a standing ovation. I attended the festival as an intern with the co-founders of the Harry M. Warner Film Institute. We're holding our first annual film festival this spring, and we went out to Sundance to see some films and get some more experience with festivals in general. After this show, both of my supervisors were so impressed that they approached the director of this film to see if he would be willing to submit a film to our festival. If you haven't seen this film yet, you are definitely missing out.
