Blood Machines (2019)
Awesome visuals, no plot
It's like watching all of the cinematics of a poorly written video game. IT DOESN'T PAY OFF.
It could have been golden, with some character development and some stakes, and a little world building.
The acting is serviceable because there is barely a script, just an amazing storyboard!
However, it gives me hope that shudder will buy the "heavy metal" franchise, and make some awesome stories.
Unfortunately, this experiment is one that I will never watch again.... But I will definitely listen to the music. 10/10.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Watch it as a reboot, not as a timeline title
After Alien 3, I was content with ending the franchise in my heart. Yes I watched the other movies and like many, I was disappointed.
When Prometheus dropped, I looked at it like a reboot, and I was invested. So in essence, this is a sequel to that reboot, which is expertly done....for what it's worth.
I didn't want to review the other movie until I saw this one, because like others, I hate cliffhanger movies.
That said, this movie delivers if it just stays in its own lane, which can be as grandiose as a Lord of the Rings trilogy. I think the reason these movies pose a challenge to the consumer is because they keep trying to keep the original alien movie in cannon. So if you watch these particular movies, you already ruined "Alien". However, watching the 2 movies as standalone films in a rebooted franchise, this could be its own universe of films.
As a comic book fan, I would like to see a story where you can tie in other alien races, and a proper Alien VS Predator, where the Predators land on the alien planet.
As a film, it holds its own, as a proper sequel to the (rebooted in my opinion) franchise. There is a proper amount of mystery and splendor, and even though people might have a problem with these movies, maybe they should take "Alien" out of the equation.
The film loses points mainly in not explaining a few things about the engineers that they cut from the first movie. I would also have liked a few minutes with the "population and culture" of the "engineers".
All in all, Alien lays the blueprint, but Prometheus and covenant are a totally different experience, and should be applauded.
Covenant by itself is more of a 6, because it assumes that you saw Prometheus. But having watched both, I gave it an 8.
(so what if it copies a few things from Alien, if you look at this as a reboot, the proper sequel to this movie will be amazing. But if alien IS the sequel, I'm not very happy with Alien, because it is spoiled. The mystery, is destroyed in these prequel movies.)
Jesus (2020)
A must see.
I read all of the reviews, both good and bad. I scored this "movie/play" the way I did because I honestly enjoyed the sights, sounds, and acting.
I am not a Christian, nor am I religious. But the story does yield a much larger metaphor, as it is basically telling anyone that watches, that it is never Ever too late to stop killing that part of yourself, which you deny daily in pursuit of daily survival... I feel that anyone who does not like the play, does not understand the material, and the fact that it is obvious that the budgets are not the same as a Hollywood production, and for good reason.
The acting is wonderful, and relatable, the camera work is excellent, and if I have to ding it for anything, I wish it was film, and it's that I can't watch it again. It is a hard watch, because in the end, you will realize that Peter is our proxy. Always was.
Watch it with loved ones. Eat your heart out Disney.
