Nu jing cha (1973)
Wow! A five dollar DVD with Mr. Chan!
Jackie Chan is incidental in this blurry golddigger (i.e., cash in on his fame) re-release. A tedious use of 80 minutes, very little action. Better action in five-minute sequences in 'Martial Law' repeats. I bought an expensive CD box for five dollars, which is the only redeeming aspect of buying that thing.
The Next Karate Kid (1994)
All teenagers should see it.
Another 'good overcoming evil' story, but with a difference. This includes learning self-discipline. When Julie goes with her teacher to a Zen monastery, she learns about herself. She also hones her karate skills.
When the Zen monks visit the city, some awkward and comical moments ensue. Not uproarious, but entertaining nonetheless.
Next Karate Kid has much to say about looking within, and improving what is there -- as well as using what you have.
Little Buddha (1993)
Thoughtful and uplifting
If you're looking for mindless action, go elsewhere. This movie is thoughtful. Yes, it does tend to run too long. It tells the story of Buddha without getting too fanciful. This story is woven with the story of Jesse, and the Tibetans who believe that he may be the reincarnation of a revered teacher.
Little Buddha does not dwell on the atrocities of the Chinese Communist occupation of Tibet. Instead, it shows the Tibetan culture and beliefs. It is unfortunate that new VHS copies are unavailable; mine came from the Internet.
