Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Is this a joke?
I was looking forward to this movie with all the hype around it, and was very much let down. I found it to be a hard watch. The human characters were awful, and Godzilla was a cartoony subpar version of what we've come to know him as. How this movie won an Oscar for best visual effects is beyond me. You could easily see the models they were using in many shots. Godzilla x Kong the new empire was vastly superior to this movie in every way, and it was by no means perfect.
My understanding is that the fans of the original movies feel like this is more of that. I certainly believe them, this movie feels like it's straight out of the mid 1900's albeit a bit more polished. If you love the originals, definitely take a look at this. If you're a fan of the new Godzilla movies like I am, I wouldn't waste much time with this one.
I wouldn't watch a sequel.
Migration (2023)
Duckin Excellent
Animation was stellar, story was fast paced and fun, humour was above average, all in all, a must see cartoon for the family!
In my mind, compared to other successful animated shows geared towards families, this is easily among the best. Our whole family enjoyed it from start to finish. It was beautifully animated at a very high quality.
The story was fresh from the duck/migration view, and started off perfectly. My only gripe is that it followed a very similar path as most animated movies, I wish they would've kept the main antagonist as nature itself and stayed away from the Gru looking weirdo. The show was was at its best when people were out of it!
Minor gripe though, excellent movie for the whole family!
Side note - guessing if they used more recognizable actors for voice work, this show would've done better at the box office!
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
Disney is learning...
Would you look at that! First three episodes in and zero sociocultural statements trying to be made!
Why is this show liked and people watching? Because it is following the source material and giving fans what they want. There is zero secret on how to be successful in adapting fiction - adapt what was written and boom, you have success.
The second a studio, or director decides to inject their own sociocultural commentary into another artists works, it is doomed. People love the books for a reason, and trust me, it isn't your new aged version of them.
Glad to see Disney has been punished enough for their perversion of fantastic story telling and returning to what matters the most to us fans - a sincere effort in creating quality adaptations of the works we love.
For the first three episodes, I highly recommend this show!
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Snyder is a writer away from true greatness
For the love of god Zack, find a writer. Snyder is top of the class when it comes to visuals, action, and imagination, but the man's ability to tell a story is not up to par. This movie is almost Sucker Punch all over again - one of the best looking movies you'll see, but story and dialogue fall short.
I love the cast he put together and the creativity in Rebel Moon is as good as any movie made. I had little investment in any character or their story though, too much was trying to be done in a short time. I have no doubt that I will care more as the story continues to unfold in part 2. The planned R rated directors cut will certainly elevate this movie.
Critics are being way too hard on this movie, for certain I enjoyed it more than The Force Awakens, or the Dial of Destiny. Snyder is very talented, he just needs some help in the writing department! Looking forward to part 2!
Leo (2023)
I live on the tears of Sandler haters!
Sandler is the goat. For so many years his haters voices were loud and almost overwhelming, but the man persevered. You can still find their empty skeletons, just look at the critics who still try and tear him down on any review site for this movie.
Leo is a top notch cartoon! One of the best in years (certainly better than what Disney and Pixar have been churning out). Entire family loved it. Animation style was well done, and balance of humour and life lessons were brilliant. Every kid should watch this show.
Thank you Netflix for giving Adam Sandler a home. He's really thriving there and it is a pleasure to see! Go Sandman, your fans are with you to the end!
Napoleon (2023)
Unfortunately Napoleon and the French aren't that interesting.
Some decent moments, Phoenix was a good Napoleon, overall though, nowhere near as exciting as Gladiator. I think Scott did the best he could with what he had to work with, ultimately Napoleon isn't a a beloved hero, and the French were super weird during that era.
Movie spanned too many years, and went too quickly for any possibility of getting invested in the story. I would've preferred a more exciting take on a smaller portion of his life, with some notes at the end to sum it all up.
I must say, probably some of the goriest scenes I've seen in a while where used in the opening act, I got excited for what was to come, but Scott used his two best shots in the opening for some reason... although the winter battle was great too. I hoped for a better movie.
Hoping Gladiator 2 is better.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Disney has no business making comic book movies.
Another terrible MCU outing with a strong character reduced to a shadow of her original concept. Captain Marvel should be a slam dunk, but here we are once again, making a film for about 10% of the population. MCU only exists because of the people who bought the comics originally, and if you can't understand that, you shouldn't be in charge of making these films. If Disney's plan continues to be trying to take original products and repackage them for whatever they believe is today's generation they will be nonexistent in a decade. NO ONE WANTS THEIR FAVOURITE CHARACTERS AND STORIES REIMAGINED FOR TODAYS SOCIOCULTURAL MOVEMENTS! Hollywood does not have that super power. You are story tellers, if you are going to take on preexisting stories, then do them justice by keeping the product as close to the original concept as possible - or continue to lose your business.
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."
First things, almost did not watch this.. Why on Earth was it call "Usher". Thought this was Usher's documentary as Netflix has been spinning out docs like crazy lately. Maybe that was the point, perhaps more people would watch an Usher documentary than those (like me) who wouldn't.
This series (like The Haunting of Hill House) was such episodic genius! The talent on display here is incredible. Flanagan is easily one of the best directors alive today. Can't wait to see more of his works!
Bruce Greenwood and Carla Gugino were incredible, they both need to be in more shows. Greenwood replaced Frank Langella who would've also been great, but sounds like he was up to no good on set and got himself fired for some inappropriate behaviour.
Several other really good actors/actresses as well!
Great series, highly recommend if you like horror and great storytelling!
The Witcher (2019)
S1 9 - S2 7 - S3 5
How did we go from Season one to Season three... so disappointed to see one of my favourite shows devolve into this mess.
If you come across this review and are thinking about starting this series, save yourself the time.
The creative team should all be ashamed of taking such an opportunity and driving it off a cliff. There was so much love and excitement for this series after season one, that Netflix executives must be upset with the direction this series took.
The Witchers main ingredients are Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer monsters, horror, suspense, adventure, witchcraft, and that has all been lost. Who is in charge of green lighting these seasons? Fire them first.
Play Witcher 3 instead.
Barbie (2023)
Are we still in the 60's lol?
I feel like we as a society can't move past our parents and grandparents battles... women in first world civilizations have it better than ever (spoiler alert, it'll only get so good). Movie would have had a great message 60 years ago.
I liked the originality of the movie, I would've preferred the movie to revolve around weird Barbie as the main character, I think the humour and weirdness could've been cranked up a lot more!
I really think we should stop telling kids that they are more than they are. My generation was told that we are all different and special, look where that led lol. Let's be honest with each other, we live on a paradise planet, but we'd rather succumb to our worst impulses, greed, lust, etc, etc, rather than evolve and live too the standards we wish we could achieve. Rich and beautiful people rule the Earth, the rest of us work for them willingly. It is the Kens, Barbies, and the Mattel type CEOs who have the planet (for some reason we are okay with that)..
Barbie isn't a billion dollar movie because of its message, thank the beautiful people who are cast and the originality/nostalgia of it!
The Flash (2023)
Hell hath no fury like a DCEU fan scorned..
If the Flash could've moved those legs just a bit faster and got us all back to a point in time where the DCEU management announced a continuation of Snyders Universe - right after the Wild success of ZSJL release, this would've been a 1B film.
The shock of Snyders anti-Marvel formula was finally fading, Zack was more popular than ever (the envy of most directors), and what does Warner Bros do? Not what they should have, which was green light ZSJL2, MoS2, and let Affleck have his run at a solo Batman movie.
The Flash was great, one of the best comic book movies I've seen in a while. Lots of heart, comedy, nostalgia, and action.
The amount of fans that will never support the DCEU ever again is extraordinary, and we've been seeing it since Black Adam. Gunn's Universe is over before it even starts. DC characters need to be boxed up and hidden away for at least a decade.
Cook at All Costs (2022)
Cook at Netflix's costs..
Half the show is good! Love the concept!
However Netflix very forcibly has suppressed the potential cash winnings - embarrassingly so. Winner of first round should get all their money back or more, second round should be 10k win min, and most importantly - there should not be minimum bids. If Netflix only wanted to average $10k winnings then they should've just stick with that and removed the bidding aspect.
There needs to be a path to $25k per game, or an extremely low chance at $50k. That would take this game to another level.
When the second round started on the first episode and they started min bids at $4k for save box - I'm not sure I ever felt that type of cringe for a "game show"
Do better Netflix.
Silo (2023)
A Silo that needs an Elevator
Cool show, totally bananas though.. How do you a build a vertical Silo in the ground and forget the elevator? Those poor porters are running all day long lol - I'd be outside after a week of that craziness!
Strong lady in generator/furnace/nuclear power plant keeps turning a nut with a wrench... seems like poor design on the engineers part to install a single nut in a large generator that needs to be turned all the time!
Also wondering what happens if someone accidentally says, "hey, I want to go out... to get some groceries..." do they still have to die, or?
I also feel like the last society underground for a 140 years is going to figure out "paint" at some point... seems like a pretty dreary place with not a lot to do.
Minor gripes though, will update when season is over, interesting show so far!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
James Gunn really loves '87 RoboCop, leave your kids at home.
Enjoyed parts of the movie, but sad I brought kids to it... Way to dark for this trilogy - way, way too dark. Torturing small animals, full on '87 RoboCop ripoff, angelic imprisoned children for some reason, and masterful movie making - this couldn't be more James Gunn if you tried.
Ol' Gunn... always flirting with the absolute edge. I've followed this guys career pretty closely. His early on Twitter 'charm' is on full display here. You can tell this was his last MCU movie and he pushed everything to the R limits. Can't imagine what's on the cutting room floor... actually can't believe Fiege allowed this script to see the light of day.
I do not recommend bringing kids under the age of 15 to this. There is some psychotic imagery here that will leave a lifelong impression, even if your kids are used to scary movies, games, YouTube videos like mine are. This is beyond scary or creepy.
GotGV1 is one of the best MCU movies made. This movie was made for Reddit.
65 (2023)
I guess I don't know what I'm talking about...
Once again missed out on a great movie in theatres after looking at reviews. I cannot imagine how this movie did not do better critically, it had so many great elements.
Driver and Greenblatt were very good, I enjoyed both of their characters and thought they played nicely off each other. The story was entertaining and moved quickly, there was sci-fi, horror, adventure, and some cool looking dino's! The movie had a Prometheus/Alien feel, could've been directed by Ridley Scott if I didn't know better.
Disappointed that this scored so low, and seemingly I have know idea what I'm talking about, because this was almost a 10 for me. Deserved much better!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Don't take my word for it
I was 7 when I got my first NES system (just came out a year before) - and I've been a Mario fan ever since. So 10/10 was an easy score for me to give. It hit all the right points for me and I felt like a child again.
However, the 10/10 is coming from my kids. 11 year old boy, and 16 year old girl. They loved every second of this movie and I've never seen them so excited before and after a movie - ever. We are going again next week!
If you ever played a Mario game, or if your children have ever played one, please get to the theatre, we need so much more of this!
All characters hit the right notes for me, this was very well cast. Considering the decades of Mario games that we've seen, the creative team did such an amazing job of touching on so many, if not all (will have to watch again to see what I missed)!
Lastly, thank you Shigeru Miyamoto for the lifetime of entertainment, and thank you for allowing my kids to have such a fantastic experience!
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
John Neo Wick
I think someone mixed up some scripts or something, seemingly John Wick is in the Matrix...
Action is top tier, some of the best scenes maybe ever (dragon breath shotgun anyone?). Some of it is lesser than and could've been cut to make this movie a bit more efficient (I love long movies, but only if the length makes sense). I feel like the Osaka scene should've been closer to the end of the movie, it was incredible.
Keanu is more tired looking, nowhere near as sharp as JW1, but still incredible, his only competition is himself.
JW1 was kind of believable, the action was intense, but I could see a top level assassin pulling it off (mostly), with a handful of luck. This John Wick can only be Neo, because this movie defies any possible logic or reason.
Definitely see in theatres, was a great experience, but no sequel has been as good as the original John Wick movie!
The Whale (2022)
Point and less.
Seeing Fraser back on screen was good, but I didn't particularly like the way they brought him back. There was no point to this movie, no awe inspiring ending, it was void of meaning.
There where jarring moments for me that brought me back to Austin Powers, or even the end credits of Dodgeball (fu Chuck Norris).
By the end of this movie, I only felt dislike for Fraser's character. He was the embodiment of the worst of mankind, the apex of selfishness. How could anyone care for him on any level?
The daughter was way over the top, the character was over acted, and nonsensical. The whole plot thread with her and the bible salesman was an ugly add on.
I would've liked the movie to end with Fraser's character alone and showing that he was the villian in this story. A very selfish human who only cared about himself, getting exactly what he deserved.
Aronofsky's The Fountain was a much better experience.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
This is not Tolkien.
There is no Tolkien here.
With that out of the way, judging this show on its own merits as a fantasy series based on Tolkiens works, it is abysmal. I loved PJ's movies, but my dislike for ROP is not because of that. The writing for this show is the worst I've seen. They had an open slate and they created this empty, nonsensical world with no tie that binds.
How do you spend a billion and not hire the best writing team possible? The show looked good, good music, and it had decent actors on the roster, but it was not cohesive on any level. The story telling was awful and comparable to the recent Wheel of Time series.
I am also going to point out that the LotR trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy had these huge sets and battles that you could feel were expensive. This show did not have a single moment where I felt that. Lots of impressive CGI scenery, but that's it.
There is no fun or excitement here, just confusion and empty filler. I'd expect high school writers to have more talent.
Full Swing (2023)
PGA is rigged
Great series that fell apart at the last episode trying to (once again) push their poster boy onto everyone. McIlroy is PGA made champion. You can see Scheff throwing his shots in the tour championship, that putt on 17 was laughable.
LIV is one of the greatest things to come to the sports world. The only reason being that it has torn apart the PGA and exposed it's weaknesses for all to see. Tiger is not a sports hero (he took that from himself), McIlroy is not a champion (or even likeable), and the PGA caters only to the wealthy elite.
Full Swing took the greasy road out and I'm embarrassed for it. Watch six episodes and then shut it off.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Might be the most beautiful movie ever made!
I don't believe I've seen a better made movie technically ever. Saw this in a Laser Ultra theatre in 3D and I was blown away. I implore you to see this in 3D! It is superior to Avatar 1 in almost every way.
Story was good, I enjoyed it and found myself on the edge of my seat several times. Cameron is one of the best at creating villains and it is no different here.
Avatar 2 looks like a next level video game most of the time, and I felt like I was watching a real world. It is so well done. The human and CGI scenes were flawless.
James Cameron is among the greatest filmmakers alive today and I'm very glad he stuck with Avatar. I hope we get to see this series to it's planned conclusion.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Prequel that is GoT light
Full season edit: 7/10
I ended up liking the show more than I thought I would. It started to hit its stride by episode 7. I was invested in the characters by the end and looked forward to each Sunday.
I was not a fan of the character changes and time jumps at all. This could've been better handled with flashbacks or dialogue. Changing the actress for Rhaenyra was a travesty, you could've easily de-aged Emma, or aged Milly. Both are great actresses, but this change was too jarring and nonsensical.
Some great characters this season, Vicerys is top of the list. Dragon CGI improved by the end as well.
Still no GoT, but happy to be back in this world!
HBO, please explain why there will be more than a years wait for season 2? Possibly two years isn't acceptable at all. GoT season 2 was one year after season one and it was a lot more riskier at that time.
Episode one review 5/10
First off, never met a prequel that I liked better than the original, this is no different. Half the suspense is gone before you start. Why would I care anything about the Targaryen's knowing the fate of their family? Maybe if Daenerys story had a different outcome, perhaps I'd be more invested in her family and their history.
Secondly, comparing episode one of GoT and ep1 of HotD, I can easily say GoT was light years better. It had stronger characters with way more personality, several exciting storylines that got started within an hour, and to touch on the first point - the excitement of the unknown.
I found the CGI to be a bit lesser than what we saw in GoT - which really is not acceptable. The entire colour palette of this show is quite dreary and unremarkable.
This would've been a below average episode during the first half of the original GoT series. Season 8 destroyed my passion for this World and this episode did not revive it.
Prey (2022)
4th Place!
Original is first, 2010 Predators, second, and 2004 Alien vs Predator is third. This would be fourth on my list.
Midthunder was good, think she'll have a bright future. Story was okay, had some good moments. CGI wasn't great.
There is no secret to what's missing in these sequels. It's Arnold. No one has come close in these sequels to his on screen presence. The original will never be beat, probably time to quit trying.
Also not sure how many women grew up wishing they could take on the predator, not entirely sure who this movie was made for?
The Sandman (2022)
Visuals 7/10, story -5/10
Decent looking garbage, don't waste you're time.
Visuals (especially early episodes) had a Crow-esque feel, was dark and goth like. CGI wasn't great in some areas (gargoyle, Dreams city, etc). Last half turned into a bland looking sitcom.
Never read The Sandman, but certainly it must have been more cohesive than this. Story is all over the place and spanned multiple timelines, giving this series almost no structure making it impossible to care to follow it. Dialogue was also subpar.
Spend your time watching The Crow instead.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Feel like screaming like a goat...
What did I just watch... very disappointed. This movie was only about half as good as Ragnarok.
Korg wasn't anywhere near as funny as he was last time, and for some reason, now is a pile of rocks that has a sexual preference?
The CGI was absolutely awful - the worst yet in any MCU movie. Those other gods were total trash.
Crowe was so out of place it was jarring. Hated his character.
Bale's character was really good, but he needed a better movie, his gritty character and story arc did not mesh well with goofy Thor and company.
Thor seems like he is no longer the strongest character in his own movies, he's become comic relief to powerful females characters.
I gave Ragnarok a 10/10, Taika, you failed me on this one!
