Bored to Death
26 March 2007
After reading other comments, I guess I better watch this movie again in case I missed something. I was so bored I pushed the stop button on my DVD. I love Andy Garcia, he is one of my favorite actors, but I resent seeing him screaming in Latino fashion just like he did in When A Man Loves a Woman and Godfather III, as if he could not control his Latin temper. Seems as if I am seeing the same character in different films. Also, there were shades of family love here à la Godfather, mention of I love my family or something along those lines. Ines Sastre was a dis-Sastres choice with her Spanish accent, there were many other fine actresses to choose from. I was hoping to love this film, and was greatly disappointed. Besides, how many Cubans have the last name Fellone? not even one in the Miami phonebook.

Movie captures ambiance of Red Scare era
23 March 2007
Frances is my favorite movie of all time! I just love everything about this movie, even though I know it is not for everyone. I can identify so much with Frances'relationship with her controlling mother and how hard it is when you love someone whole-heartedly yet they love you back in "their own way". I loved the costumes, make-up, hairstyles, furniture, even the color of the film itself, brownish, golden tones, which gives it a melancholic feeling. Jessica Lange's performance should have won her the Oscar instead of winning it for Tootsie. Hollywood knew they had to give her something and not leave her out that year. The Red Scare was all over this film and what the consequences of being true to one's ideals may be in a selfish world.

Poignant narration of life as an immigrant
23 March 2007
I saw this touching film last year when I was in Spain. I highly recommend it - moving story , luscious scenery, realistic situations, sensitive characters, all in all....an unforgettable film! Portrays the life of immigrants and how torn one can be between one's new country and one's past life..... The main actor understood this very well because he directed the film which I believe was based on his own experiences as a child. It won several Goya awards in Spain. Many people who have left their country for a better life will be able to identify with this film. My heart was aching somewhat when I left the theater and I even wished the characters all the best!
