Prey (2022)
Not bad.
Honestly I think we need to start labeling Incels when they write reviews. Yeah it wasn't the best movie I've seen all year, but I've seen a heap worse than 'Prey'. It's true to say though (as I read in an article recently) that The Predator has lost its bite somewhat. The creature is no longer truly scary, so the act of defeating ends up feeling a tad mundane in the conclusion. It wasn't a bad attempt at revitalising the franchise, but I do think they should put it to bed now.
The Northman (2022)
Disappointing
Perhaps I had hyped this film a little too much in my mind, but as a student of Norse culture and film there were just so many wrong choices. I believe Eggers will create a great epic one day, but sadly this is not it. Truly I never want to see Kidman attempting to act again.
Loveland (2022)
A Wasted Opportunity
Honestly I didn't mind watching this film, but with the talent he had and the clearly substantial budget, it was unfortunate in many ways. Aside from the almost painfully unoriginal nature of the story, I just kept thinking one thought over and over. A middle-aged man, a young beautiful woman and an older man. How many times have I seen this same scenario? Too many.
Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
Unwatchable
A steaming pile of manure. If I saw this back in 2000, I must have scrubbed it from my memory. I had heard it was bad, but truly this one needs to be deleted from the annals of film history.
The Last Duel (2021)
Not the master's best.
Yes definitely not the best of Ridley Scott, but certainly watchable for the most part. It did feel a little leaden in parts, but for mine Comer saves the picture. Her turn as the lady wronged amidst some at times wooden performances from the other stars, was simply breathtaking. Without her, I'm not sure I would have been so kind with my review. Does anyone else have a hard time believing that Affleck and Damon are actually writers? Hmmm just a sideways thought.
Dune (2021)
Sublime
It is a remarkable feat in the age of the Marvel tripe factory to have taken on Herbert's perfection in print and to have achieved this beautiful work of art. To the folks that bang on about its pacing, return to the meaningless mire of the MCU. Epic films of the past built slowly and that is the nature of Dune (the novel) itself. You are voices in the wilderness clearly evidenced by the ratings and pro reviews. Revel in unending swill of superhero nonsense and just stop going to independent films and rare cinematic masterpiece. You will never be pleased by auteurs, so stop shouting in the wind about that, which you know not. As a devotee of Dune, operatic sci-fi and high fantasy, I was certainly ready to be disappointed, particularly after Bladerunner 2049, but I was wholly immersed by Villeneuve's triumph. It is a film I will return to and look forward to the next release. Bravo.
