Vinyan (2008)
much better than average
I can see how this is not to everyone's liking however I truly think this is an above-average film. Very well done overall. Excellent acting, beautiful cinematography, intense mood and a realistic documentary feel.
It is way better than most "blockbuster" films in this general category although I agree with most reviewers that it doesn't quite fit nicely in the "horror" genre. It is not full of cheap scares. Instead it relies on a heavy atmosphere of dread to instill a feeling of unease throughout.
It could be described as slow perhaps, to some, yet I did not personally sense that it was overlong. It kept me quite engrossed throughout.
I highly recommend this intelligent, skillfully made film.
Le lait de la tendresse humaine (2001)
an empty movie
I really hate to be negative but, I could not see any redeeming features to this film. I could not identify with or care about any of the characters. The acting was often awkward and felt unrealistic even though the style of film-making was cinema-verite. The hand-held camera's motion was distracting and brought attention to itself. Loose and rambling editing with the camera teetering into extreme facial closeups unnecessarily. The film had pretentious moments and seemed to lead nowhere. There was plenty of potential to explore and possibly comment upon post-partum depression but this film seems only to have skimmed the surface and shown us many angry and confused people and nothing more. Pointless and boring.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Not worth the hype
For anyone who loves films of the caliber of Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby", you will be disappointed. It seems like a popular movie judging by the volume of high votes on this site but, it has little to offer as far as psychological "depth". This is a film by a young director who does not seem to have the maturity or intense vision other great directors. It is a competent film and watchable but I wouldn't have the slightest inclination to watch it again and, after this, I am not even tempted to view his latest efforts.
See it if you like the average Hollywood blockbuster, but avoid it at all cost if you enjoy great film-making.
