The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
The scene in subway bathroom touches me so bad....
I always keep these lines by Chris in mind: " Don't ever let somebody tell you...you can't do something. Not even me."
" You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want something, go get it. Period."
Sometimes, over generous economic background, over comfortable living conditions, and too ample time to waste contrarily get us losing faith and motivation of striving and advancing, as well taking time for granted rather than cherishing it.
A stockbroker internship position at Dean Witter
might be one of the many opportunities for other interns. However, as for Chris, that was the one and the only hope. So he exerted all out to grasp tighter this opportunity than anyone else. He constantly believed in there's way out and kept showing the best of him, and finally he made it.
Though there were tons of crappy, awful, terrible days and nights back then, those are the motivators and nutrients continuously push us to be better ones.
I think Chris still view those predicaments as his gift ,counts the blessings and never takes them for granted.
No matter how we define our "happiness", there is one thing that the movie have us to bear deeply in mind: " Would rather strive but fail than living in the regret of not taking actions. Period" : )
Drive (2011)
Violent, bloody, but romantic and gentle.
The music, the contrast of tone, the advantage of lights and shadows, the subtle combination of the tempo and scene, and the emotion showing in Ryan gosling's eyes are all incredibly amazing. It presents the romance under the aestheticization of violence.
Though Ryan gosling had few lines and always slow react and respond by half a beat, he used his eyes to grasp our attention, we can totally feel that tense and nervousness, how incredible! (and also his pretty face lol)
I partially wish the ending scene means they'll get back together otherwise that'll be soooo sad :(
The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
Surprisingly impressive.
I loved the chemistry between the main actors and actresses. They took deep into the characters that makes me easily relate to the circumstances in the movie. Idk why I wrote it so long lol but I have a lot to say.
Teens of all age might experience the situation of awkwardness in the party, loneliness during luncheon time, feeling so damn lost and self-abased in some ways, or even hated ourselves from the bottom of our hearts, not to mention expecting others to like us. Somebody's attentiveness is luxurious to us.
And sure I did.
Like Nadine hate what she saw, how she's acting, the way she sounds when she's like floating outside of her body and looking down on herself. The inferiority swallows us, swallows rest of a bit confidence and dignity till we build up a tough wall against others.
Up to someday, there is a one who genuinely cherish you, love you and find out your special. Then the sincerity finally let down our guard so that we can finally get our reliefs.
It's not telling us do not break the hearts of those who's totally snowflakes, easily to get hurt and over sensitive. Instead, we should have greater empathy with others, because everyone has story.
One of the impressive scene that Nadine's moms said: Here's what I do when I'm feeling down. I get very quiet and very still. And I said to myself " Everyone in the world is as miserable and empty as I am." "They're just better at pretending." I just deem it really helpful to me though.
Although the most touching scene is the hugging scene Nadine and her brother did, I still especially loved the swimming pool scene in Erwin's house. They are sooo good together and Haley looks insanely pretty in that scene.
It's about growing, understanding, and empathizing. Highly recommended. Btw I need an Erwin in my life.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The power of believing HOPE
"Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies." This is the one and the only well-deserved IMDb top 1 movies on the planet.
I cried so hard where Brooks hanged himself and where Red read the letter under the oak tree. One is feeling extremely sad but also later being touched by "so was Red" inscribed after Red's exemption. The other is feeling extremely relieved with the characters. All those struggles are worth it. Hope propped them up. Andy gave Red the Hope, which made him keep moving on, which didn't let go of Red as Brook did. A Hope, and a friendship redeemed Red. I think some day if I lose faith in my life and deem that's no way out, I 'll ask myself to watch this movie again, maybe I'll feel totally different from now, maybe it not only redeemed Red but me, but all the hopeless people. Stay hopeful, and someday we'll relieve.
16 ge xia tian (2014)
The best Taiwanese drama in recent years!
I have to say I cried so hard even when I rewatch it :)
If you are wondering whether it's good enough to spend 16 hour on it, well don't hesitate and go watch it immediately. You'll not regret!
The charming axis of time makes everything in the storyline even more fascinating. Not only because the two main characters, but the group of five were ultimately closely connected with one another even though years had gone by or something terrible occurred to them. That literally moved and touched me soooo much.
"Remembering is forever."
Friends (1994)
The one and the only good old classic
As an after-00s, I stared to be fascinated by all these 90s and pre-00s fashion bc of this show. In this glorious era, they didn't have smartphones, social media, or any dating apps. People knew the realest one another. While now we have tooooo many approaches to decorate ourselves to completely different people. Besides, we also indulge toooo much online boosting of ourselves instead of genuine enrichments. We somehow can't recognize whether it's genuineness or not. We can't deny that complexities are overwhelming and the good old days are the purest and happiest ones. I grew with the characters and also be nostalgic for the past.
Love, Rosie (2014)
One of my fav rom-com!
Yeh, right. It was underrated! I even wanted it to be 11/10.
Well, I admit that the prefect casting has already won my heart and taken up maybe 7/10 lol. Sam Claflin and Lily Collins are so good together and they should win the Best Onscreen Couple in Hum. And the rest of the 3/10 is according to some credible reasons why you should go watch it immediately if you are wondering if it is good.
First, do not like over-twisted plot throughout the storyline cuz we search for rom-coms with predictable content and happy ending.
Secondly, a charming axis of time makes all these things even more fascinating. We watched them grew up, became mature, had family and partners while continually loving, and cherishing each other, till they finally revealed their hearts and came together, which they've been waiting and pretending for soooo long. Which " Better late than never" by Rosie in the last scene couldn't be more aptly quoted.
Lastly, what else could be more romantic than best friends turned out to be lovers together? When you fall for your best friend but in the wrong timing, you feel like the luckiest yet the most unfortunate. That's why this movie is always haunting.
I loved the wedding scene that Rosie said: "Because sometimes you don't see that the best thing that has ever happened to you is sitting there, right under your nose. But that's fine too. It really is. Because I've realized that no matter where you are, or what you're doing, or who you're with, I'll always honestly, truly, completely, love you." "I will always stand guard over your dream, Alex. No matter how weird or twisted they get." I cried everytime I watched.
The Truman Show (1998)
The most unrealistically realistic movie
First I admit that as an after-00s, I wasn't interested in this soooo much when I watched it at the first time with my dad, though he continuously iterated how good is that (well now I do believe that it literally means a lot to those who are born in 70s because 90s was their shining era, right) . But few years ago, my crush in high school set the Truman show poster( the one with Truman's laughing face on it) as his line profile, and I immediately rewatched it that night in order to discuss with him on the other day(yeh such a indecisive valley) but wow it turned out to be resonated af. I supposed that people who are a bit cynical and negative or who sometimes figures that life is a bi*th would feel related to Truman. We're all shackled by frames of social norms and standards, struggling with what I'm supposed to be, dominated by what I supposed to do. People unfriendly eyes and attention disturb us to be ourselves. Their unintentional comments hit the softest part of our hearts. All these make us live as performing an ever-lasting show, we'll never be satisfied with the suppressing and deceiving scenarios, and either are the audience, the public, the society.
Thus, screw all those goddamn standards and limitations. It's how we are and It's what we are.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
What a legend!
I kept reminding myself that was filmed in 1968 when I was watching it, which yet no one has landed on the moon, which yet CGI hadn't existed and all were manually painted, which yet my parents even haven't been born.......
And most importantly, this perfectly predicted today's technology though apparently some of them we haven't achieved.
This is the primogenitor of Sci-fi. The one and the only legend.
