Totally Awful and Frankly Heartbreaking
14 December 2008
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I love Denzel Washington, but he must have been truly desperate to do this movie. I guess I'm especially sensitive because our next President will have a European-American parent. It wasn't even a little funny, it was insulting to everyone. I kept waiting for something funny to happen, but it just kept getting meaner and stupider, with what's-his-name treating this supposed son like dirt. Is that funny? Sorry, I don't get it. Yuck, so glad Washington moved on to better things. I'm only continuing to type because I need to put in 10 lines, and I really need to get this review off my chest. Are we done yet? Are we? Yeah!!

Absolutely Amazing How History Repeats Itself
14 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I happened to watch this movie during the height of the debates about "bailouts" for the banks and car companies. People in the movie used exactly the same arguments as people today; I think the President even used the word "bailout" for the working people! I know that this movie was made at the height of the Great Depression, when there were numerous debates about what should be done to stimulate the economy. The difference between then and now is that in the movie the President basically shut down Congress and declared marshal law....and Congress went right along with it. The President became a benign dictator, which apparently the angle Gabriel had told him to do. I was just floored, watching this guy who looked so Presidential, it was very realistic in my opinion. Could we ever be convinced to give up our rights for the greater good? Well, we forget that Lincoln suspended Constitutional rights during the Civil War; but I'm not convinced that today's American would ever allow such a thing. Nope, not convinced at all. Extremely interesting movie.

Now I Understand What All the Hubbub Was About!
12 November 2006
This came out when I was a little kid. Now that I'm in my 40's, I'm going back to watch all those movies from the 60's that I didn't "get" back then.

WOW! I found this to be a very powerful movie, give the time period in which it was produced. How sad to see Sharon Tate in such a great roll! I thought this movie well reflected the times: the easy access to pills and the constant overdose deaths; the growing "Who am I, what do I really want?" attitude among women; and of course it's a treat to see such great acting. I can see Patty Duke was struggling just a little in her "grown up" roll, but she pulled it off fine. I'm so glad I finally saw this movie!
