Freaks and Geeks (1999)
Wonderful show, wish it hadn't of ended
I seriously love this show. The writing on it is definitely my favorite part. I think it's cool that the actor's improvised their lines in some scenes, and it's cool that other TV show's don't do that. The writing on it is very funny and there are very interesting story lines. I'm in high school, and i was surprised when i found that i could relate to a lot of the situations that these people got into. The casting i felt was totally perfect, every character on the show seems very believable. I also think that the setting is one the of the best parts of the show. The fact that it's 1981 is like perfect because it's basically like the 70's and a little bit of the 80's mixed in. I love the kid that plays Sam Weir, i think his voice is so adorable. The geeks in generally are just really funny in general. The freaks are actually interesting characters too, and the situations they get into are funny. I really like how this show focuses on two groups of high school characters that are never talked about seriously in other shows. In all the other shows these days (Gossip Girl, iCarly, Victorious, Wizards of Waverly place, etc) the kids are pretty socially adjusted and cool. It's nice to have a change and to have two groups that people can relate to more than the jock group.
It really is a shame that this show got cancelled, because it was wonderful. I'm hoping that someone will produce a TV show that's like Freaks and Geeks, but set in the middle of the eighties or sometime in the 90's.
Sex and the City (1998)
Great show, think that people that hate it have weak arguments
This show is absolutely wonderful. I really think that it's funny and i enjoy it a lot. These women have become my inspirations in life. There are definitely some things that they do that i don't think is right, but on the whole they are good women.
In this show probably my favorite part of it is the tight knit sisterhood between the girls. IN one of my favorite episodes, Carrie is sad that she doesn't have a soulmate. When Charlotte suggests that they be each others soulmates and just have guys be 'great nice guys to have fun with', the four girls agree. That episode proved that although it's always nice to have a man, if you have your girlfriends, you'll be happy and never lonely. This show really emphasizes how important having relationships with your girlfriends is, and i think that that's very empowering to women.
Some other good points of this show is that it's funny, the writing is really original and witty, and the setting is fabulous. I also like the situations the girls get themselves into and fights that happen in relationships, because that's all real. These are all great reasons to watch the show.
I think that this show, for the most part, is very empowering to women. The feminists in the 70's were really just women trying to break their way into a man's world. I think that most of the time these women aren't trying to break their way into a man's world, they're trying to be independent and happy women without succumbing to what the 70's feminists were trying to do--trying to be men. These women are trying to women who are strong and powerful, something that wasn't seen on TV before 1996. These women make being single fun, wheraeas before being in a relationship was always depicted in shows and movies as being more fun. These women are liberated in many ways that our grandmothers and mothers weren't. They're sexually and emotionally liberated. Also, these women support themselves financially (Except Charlotte, who on one episode quits her job after getting married, which, in my opinion, was depicted in a negative way). They really do show the modern woman in a positive way.
I read some of the reviews on here saying that these women are not being cast in a good light and that this show degrades women. Honestly, i think that it doesn't degrade women that much. I will admit, these women are materialistic for the most part. Yes, Carrie has smart and witty dialogue, but for the most part i feel as if she is very materialistic and she does obsess over relationships. Charlotte is definitely the most materialistic and traditional of all the characters on the show, and Miranda proves to be the least materialistic and the most non-traditional. But the show is about relationships and sex, hence the title, so these women will be materialistic to some extent. People need to realize that these women talk about sex and relationships because that's what real women talk about and this isn't a show about anything else. I do wish that these women were a little more worldly and smart. People have also said that these women are 'whores'. It's really frustrating that people say that because that's totally setting a double standard. And keep in mind that these are the same people that think that this show degrades women when they're really just setting a double standard that degrades women. What i mean by double-standard is that men have been being 'whores' since the beginning of time, and everyone has chosen to ignore it. When a guy sleeps with a girl, he scores. When a girl sleeps with a guy, she's a 'whore'. When this fact was acknowledged on sex and the city and these women agreed to have sex without feeling, many people wrote them off as whores. The truth of the matter is that real women do have sexual desires like men, and people need to accept that. This is another example of how these women are liberated. The thing that bothers me the most about this show is that these women don't live for themselves, they live for other men. That is the one thing about this show that does not liberate women. It doesn't degrade them, it just doesn't liberate them.
Overall, i think this show is thought-provoking, witty, funny, tastefully sexy and can be heart-breaking at times and absolutely hilarious at other times. You can learn a lot from watching these girls. I think that for the most part, this show is liberating for women. Although i think that this isn't the ultra-feminist type show, i think that it comes pretty darn close. I do hope that in the future there can be an ultra-feminist TV show.
Lizzie McGuire (2001)
I <3 this show!
I watched this show a lot when I was little (6,7,8). I looked up to Lizzie and her group of friends, and I adored everything about this show. This show is about a middle schooler named Lizzie who has a normal life-Embarrassing parents, an annoying little brother, two best friends, a worst enemy, and a crush on the hottest guy in school. Her parents are loving and supportive, but are sometimes overprotective. Her brother Matt always is getting into trouble and shenanigans. Her two best friends are Gordo and Miranda. Gordo is a typical smart, more mature guy. Not only is he extremely smart, he doesn't care what other people think of him, and he always gives Lizzie the best advice. Miranda, Lizzie's other best friend, is a lot like Lizzie, but more superficial, and she cares a lot about being popular. Lizzie has to deal with the head cheerleader/most popular girl in school, Kate, whom she was former BFF's with. Kate insults her and her friends a lot, but shows a softer side sometimes. Ethan is the hottest and most popular guy in school, whom Lizzie and Miranda chase after for years. Although he's good looking, he's a complete blockhead, and really dense.
Lizzie usually gets herself in situations that are somewhat typical, but still tough to figure out. The situations sometimes are small, (a nerdy guy asking her out, not being good at any sport, being unpopular) but sometimes the situations are bigger, and much tougher (sneaking into an R-rated movie, buying your first bra, shoplifting, getting 11 pictures in the yearbook). Either way, I learned a lot from this show. Lizzie's parents give good advice, but its usually her best friend Gordo (who, by the way, was my first TV crush) who gives her the best advice.
Everyone judges Disney for having cheesy shows, but this one isn't as cheesy as some of the more recent Disney shows (Cory in the House, Wizards, Suite Life on deck etc...). This is a good, wholesome family show. Lizzie Mcguire was a huge part of my childhood, seeing the Lizzie Mcguire Movie was a very exciting day for me. Sure, there are some insane plots, like when Lizzie dates Frankie Muniz (from Malcolm in the Middle), or when she kisses Aaron Carter and gets to be in his music video. But the rest of the episodes deal with real drama that comes up in every teenager's life. This show taught me a lot about life, and its funny. When I got into middle school, I actually saw myself dealing with a lot of the same problems Lizzie dealt with (first boyfriend, popularity issues, finding yourself). I thought that my life would be like Lizzie's when I got into middle school. I thought that I would have two close besties, a worst enemy, and a crush I could barely talk to. I had one of three things. My life was very different from Lizzie's in middle school, and that made me sad.
Another reason I loved this show when I was little because I thought everyone else's' life was like Lizzie's. I thought that everyone had the perfect, upper-middle class family and everyone had the two besties. My family is the opposite of Lizzie's and is somewhat dysfunctional. It helped me escape, even if it was only for awhile. This show showed me what was normal in life, and it kept my childhood happy.
I wish this show hadn't been canceled. Disney still plays crap like 'Suite Life' and 'Hannah Montana' when both of those shows suck. They should've kept this show going for awhile. It's a lot more realistic then Wizards undercover, a girl hiding as a popstar or kids living in a hotel or kids living in the white house. Real life, please.
Some problems I have with 'Lizzie' are 1) The fact that Lizzie is sometimes superficial, and cares WAY too much about being popular 2) It has a lot of clichés in it 3) There are some episodes that are insane, and stuff that probably wouldn't happen to teens. (Most teens wouldn't get to kiss Aaron Carter or date Frankie Muniz)
The best 'Lizzie' episodes are 'Lizzie's Eleven' 'Bye Bye Hillridge Junior High' 'First Kiss' "Grubby Gulch' 'Party Over Here' 'Come Fly With Me' 'Aaron Carter's coming to Town' and the one where Gordo and that one chick dance to Mozart. I recommend that all kids and preteens watch this show, because it's hilarious, and teaches you a lot about life.
And the best part was the ending, when Gordo and Lizzie FINALLY get together :)
Unfabulous (2004)
Great Great show
you know, I actually really like this show.
This is what the show is about, a thirteen year old girl named Addie Singer starts middle school with only her two best friends, Zach and Geena. She has a mom, a dad, and an annoying older brother and a dog. she starts off the series by having a crush on Jake Behari, the ultimate popular, hot guy. She finds out soon though that Jake doesn't like her like that, so she decides to date Randy Klein, even though she doesn't like him. But Jake ends up liking her too in the third season. It's a pretty good show but I have a few issues with it. 1) Addie is so completely selfish, it's not even funny. In the third season, when Zach and Genna got together, she didn't even care! It was just all about her! And whenever somebody in her family is having a problem, she doesn't care, she only cares about her! It's completely annoying. 2) Addie is so clumsy and dramatic. It annoys me a lot. if you watch the show, she falls down a lot or does other embarrassing things. And when Jake told her that he loved her in the third season, she was all mad off at him! That's something else that annoys me about this show. Other than those two things, this is a great show for middle school girls who are trying to find themselves. I don't think older people will like it, but girls in middle school definitely will. I recommend it.
Zoey 101 (2005)
I don't like this show very much.
Okay, this show is just not that great. First of all, the character of Zoey very much annoys me. She's all like, 'OMG I'm so perfect, look at my gorgeous hair!!!!' and Nicole, her little friend, is like that too. They both have annoying pixie voices and Zoey always has that upbeat attitude, she's perfect in every way. Im glad the series is ending soon because of Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy.
The character of Chase annoys me too. He won't freaking tell Zoey how he feels about her~! It's so annoying. I wish that he would tell Zoey. It would make the show a lot more dramatic.
I think the setting is cool, but unrealistic, no school has a movie theater, beach, shopping center and sushi bar all on campus. It's crazy and it just shows that rich spoiled teens go to this school. It's a stupid show and I hope that kids don't watch it, because it's not good and it teaches bad messages.
The Parent Trap (1998)
Two twins meet at camp in Maine and find out they are twins
This movie is my favorite movie of all time. I like it a lot better than the older version. I kind of wish Lindsay Lohan was sweet now like she was then. Now she isn't that cool. But I am kind of getting sidetracked here. So anyway Natacha Richardson did a great job of playing The Twins mother. And the girl who played Merideth did an amazing job. She said some pretty memorable lines. I think it is an overall good story. The only thing i didn't like about it was that the parents got back together even though they were divorced. It wasn't a very realistic point. but other than that I thought it was a very very good movie. If you liked this movie than YOu will love the Blue Lagoon. ANd Return to The Blue Lagoon
