Brave New World (1998)
Awwwwwwwww********llllllllll
I've never seen such a bad movie in my entire life! Why bother making it, it's horrendously bad. One of the best chances to make audiences curious, the exact likeness of 72 workers in any working section, was passed up. B-o-k-a-n-o-v-s-k-y-process, read my lips. Everyone was in contemporary dress, all the buildings were contemporary, the make-up, the people, their speech, their manners. Nothing worth paying attention to there. The director may have chosen contemporariness on purpose, but my impression is that the movie was made cheaply. Definitely not the classic the book is. No humour, no poignancy, no identification with any character at all, no conflict, no meaning, no character. What a waste of time, money and talent (?).
The Truman Show (1998)
Stays with you for years - cinematic milestone
I saw this movie when it was shown in the theatres. It stuck and after having watched it recently I labelled it classic. Fine performances from Carrey, who shows us that he can do drama too (serious romantic lead), and from Harris (didn't even recognize him! Damn that man is good). This is one movie that makes you think. The take on the film world, the triple-layered jokes, the fun poked at a very serious matter: the lack of respect for privacy that stars generally entertain trading off against financial opportunity... it certainly is a filmmaker's film, and it is accessible enough for us general filmgoers. Bonus: it is funny.
Four stars from me.
Da zui xia (1966)
splendid! different
Da zui xia was a relief. I watched many kung fu movies as a child that were slightly reminescent of this one, and have stopped watching recent ones since the scope of their theme had narrowed down so much.
Now, for the first time in many years, I am able to recover some of what I saw back then but did not fully understand. A recent tour throughout China and more familiarity with Chinese philosophy and culture gave me sudden insights in the director's message. This is very refreshing.
Due South (1994)
Highly enjoyable; Rennie sparkles
I fell quite late into watching the Due South series. Had great laughs! And what a gem Rennie is as an actor. I suspected that the intense unfolding of his character's personal history was deliberate, but he more than faced up to the challenge. What that man put out was a feat.
As for the first two seasons: yeah, they had more heart and more depth, but the last season was funnier, flowing and markedly tidy. Appreciated that very much.
Miss Congeniality (2000)
A real boon- can't understand why many official reviews are so negative about it
Hope you are reading this, Sandra! Not all viewers from European countries turn the movie down so- in fact, when I left the theatre this evening I was under the impression that everyone was quite satisfied- the girls for seeing that question on what a woman can be tackled, the men for all those long legs and bikinis. Have really enjoyed all this- very nice production you did. I actually chuckled during the first few takes when no puns were being made- just the cinematography and the mime were funny. I have a few friends who study movies and really appreciate masters like Stan Kubrick, and they liked being entertained by you.
So did I. I actually wished the movie had been longer, and the only other movie I had that with was Interview with the Vampire because it was so good on seeing it the first time. So! Another production to come?
