Joker (2019)
It's not about Joker and Gotham but about You and your City
I USED TO THINK MY WHOLE LIFE IS A TRAGEDY BUT NOW I THINK IT IS A COMEDY....The Film which every person can relate to , JOKER is a must watch for all masses. Directed and co-written by Todd Philips , the film deals with the journey of one of the most infamous villains of the DC Universe. The Journey of Arthur Flek to JOKER and the reasons behind him to become Joker.
CAST :
Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Flek was really a great choice as he perfectly fits into the character. His commandable harwork and mental preperations to get approach to the character would make you fall in love with the actor and the character as well. This was his film. As viewers we never felt that Arthur did anything suddenly. His mannerisms and acts slowly developed through his experiences. Joaquin's nervous laughter referencing it to a psychological condition (Pseudobulbular effect) , his uncontrollable run which portrays his loneliness in the society
Robert De Niro as a late night talk show host, Murray Franklin was brilliant in his performances. It was so refreshing to see sucha legendary actor actually putting a work in a commercially driven film. Although his role was small but it was effective.
STORY:
The film showcases the origin story of one of the infamous villains of the DC Universe. The first look of the film made it clear that it is going to be a masterpiece. Based on the late 1970s in Gotham City when there is extreme social and civil unrest due to high unemployment. The film has been shown through the eyes of Arthur Fleck- working as a clown in Gotham City. The film takes us on a absolute journey of him losing his control over himself , his loneliness , lack of guidance and companionship turns him into the manic state of Joker. AND ONE THING ABOUT THE MASSES WHO HAS NO IDEA ABOUT DC UNIVERSE. This film doesn't glorify the acts of Joker , neither does it has any relation with the Batman series. It simply showcases the USA in 1970s and how the common masses felt oppressed and angry towards the prieveged. How people gravitates anyone who takes a stand. Absolute anarchy can lead a man to do many things and Joker portrays one of them. The fim ends on a note leaving a fine connection between child Bruce and Joker which might even lead to a sequel of the DC series
Reasons why you should watch the film
1. Todd Phillips Direction - It was really praise worthy for the director of Hangover to pull off such a humanistic approach of the Joker.
2. Joaquin's Phoenix acting, as previously said - the man's hardwork can surely bag him an Oscar. His hard work such as loosing his physical and mental health just to fit into the character. His absolute loneliness , sadness and madness have been excellently portrayed by the man.
3. Location and music. The background music was so apt that the masses could easily co-relate Athur's journey of sadness and madness
4. Dialogues. The story has been designed beautifully with the dialogues. The film has few of the greatest quotes that has not been used in films for decades.
5. Character development. I think this film is one of the very few films is DCU where a character has been built properly. It clearly portrays that a villain isn't always a superhero. It is an ordinary man who has been made villain by the oppression and loneliness of the society
Taxi Driver (1976)
A brilliant and dark nightmare of the Urban Citylife.
"He is a Prophet and a Pusher. Partly true partly fiction, A walking contradiction"- These lines are the best to describe the character of Travis Bickle as played by Robert De Niro. Yes you guessed it right. Today we are going to review one of the masterpieces of 70's ( not THE MASTERPIECE of 70's ) directed by Martin Scorese - TAXI DRIVER. In one word , the blend of Schrader's script , Scorese's direction and De Niro's performance is both compelling and disconcerting.
STORY
Travis (played by Robert De Niro) is an ex-marine and Vietnam veteran , suffers from Insomnia and lives in isolation in New York City. His Insomnia makes him take a job as a night taxi driver , driving passengers around the city. He used to maintain a diary and often he used to watch pornographic films thinking that is the only type of films existing in this world. ( A note : This film should not be taken as a New York Film , it is not about a city but about the weathers of a man's soul ) Travis becomes infatuated with Betsy ( played by Cybill Shepherd ), a campaign volunteer for Senator and presidential candidate Charles Palantine. After watching her interact with fellow worker Tom through her window, Travis enters to volunteer as a pretext to talk to her, then takes her out for coffee. On a later date, he naively takes her to see a pornographic film, which offends her, and she goes home alone. His numerous attempts at reconciliation by sending flowers and apologizing over the phone are rebuffed, causing him to become embittered and convinced that she is exactly like the "cold" people he detests in the city. Rejected by beautiful political aide Betsy after a catastrophic date at one of the ubiquitous porn theatres, Travis becomes ambiguously obsessed with child prostitute Iris (played by Jodie Foster), abused by her pimp Sport (played by Harvey Keitel). The violent pressure inside his skull is made worse by listening to the psychotic fantasies of a creepy passenger, a cameo from Scorsese himself.
That evening, Travis drives to Sport's brothel. Travis shoots Sport in the stomach, causing a shootout to start. He shoots Iris' Time Keeper in the hand, but Sport gets up and shoots him in the neck before Travis guns him down again. Then Iris' customer comes through the door from her room and shoots him in the arm and Travis kills him with the sleeve concealed gun. He is attacked by the Time Keeper again who he stabs through the hand and finally shoots dead before the crying Iris. As the police arrive, Travis attempts to commit suicide, but runs out of ammo. Travis' shootout is seen by the police and press as an attempt to rescue Iris from armed gangsters. He is not prosecuted, and is hailed as a local hero in the press.
He receives a letter from Iris' father, thanking him for saving her and revealing that she has returned home to Pittsburgh, where she is going to school. After weeks of recovery and returning to work, Travis encounters Betsy as a fare. Travis drives her home, then refuses to let her pay the fare, driving away with a smile. As Travis drives off, he becomes suddenly agitated after noticing something in his rear-view mirror. Thus the film ends leaving us to a disturbing picture of social disarray.
CAST :
ROBERT DE NIRO was an excellent choice for the protagonist of the movie. He clearly proved that loneliness is the cancer that allows self destruction to reach its peak. His eyes clearly had an expression of disgust and an aim of removing from the streets of New York. Although he could have run his taxi throughout the cities he preferred to roam around in this nasty lanes of NewYork. His dialogues also had a special significance as his words perfectly fitted his character. There is a scene where he says "you talking to me?" Watch this scene and you will fall in love with the MAN. ( Comment down if you want a detailed character sketch of this character and how Todd Phillips got inspired from this movie to make JOKER-2019 ) here's Jodie Foster, chillingly cast as a twelve-year-old prostitute whom Travis wants to "save."
DO I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE ?
YES. YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY WATCH THIS FILM IF YOU LOVE GOOD FILMS. THE FILM IS MUCH AHEAD OF ITS TIME AND IT PORTRAYS THE LIFE OF EVERY CITY. NO MATTER HOW CHARMING OR ATTRACTIVE YOUR CITY MIGHT LOOK LIKE BUT IT MOSTLY ENDS UP WITH THIS SHADY STREETS , DIRTY BUSINESS AND WHAT NOT. AS A COMMON MAN WE ALL THINK OF BURNING THE SYSTEM AND THAT IS WHAT HAS BEEN DONE BY TRAVIS. ALTHOUGH HE IS PORTRAYED AS A HERO AFTER THE END OF THE CLIMAX BUT THE FILM ENDS WHERE TRAVIS LOOKS AT THE CITY WITH HIS SIDE VIEW MIRROR WITH THE SAME EXPRESSION AS HE HAD BEFORE SHOWING THAT HIS ATTITUDE TOWARDS THIS CITY HAS REMAINED THE SAME. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS BRILLIANT. IT HAS CAPTURED THE 70s AMERICA LIKE NEVER BEFORE. YOU WILL NOT ONLY GET TO WATCH A BRILLIANT STORY BUT WILL ALSO WITNESS AN OLD STREETS OF AMERICA
Ghawre Bairey Aaj (2019)
Impeccable adaptation and modernization of the Tagore Classic
''And they lived Happily ever after.....''
Well this didn't apply to the life of Sandeep, Bimla (a.k.a Brinda) and Nikhilesh Choudhary. Directed by Padma Shri and National Award winner, Aparna Sen - Ghawre Baire Aaj is truly a cinematic experience to its utmost supremacy. A modern retelling of the Tagore's novel, "Ghawre Bairey" it is a story of Love, Friendship, Illusion, Truth and above all "Clashing Idologies"
Story :
The Tagore's Ghawre Bairey deals with a complex love triangle of Nikhilesh, his wife Bimla and his friend Sandip. Bimla - who has never known any other man except her husband, realises that there is a perplexing emotions of her relations with Sandip. The film explores the emotional upheaval attached to this Love triangle. It is a socio-political drama which hit the thetre yesterday and a film which you should definitely go and watch.
Now, I was going to give a review when I saw that the film has a got a lot of negative reviews all over the internet. So, I have decided that I will tell you some reasons which I have liked and disliked in the movie and then I will leave it to you.
REASONS TO WATCH THE MOVIE :
1. Brinda's Story- The film has given Brinda a new dimension. The film tells her past. The film starts with Brinda addressing the audience, a snippet of childhood as how she happened to be this little skinny girl who happened to run around in the fields of Jharia till one day her parents died and she was taken to her Amma's (grand ma's) place in Delhi where she used to work as a Nanny in Nikhilesh's place. There she was brought up as their own daughter and then again we are brought to today's time when she tells us that she works as proof reader at the Oxford press and married to Nikhilesh. Although they have a huge age gap, they still share a very healthy relationship and Brinda respects a Nikhilesh a lot for the person he is.
2. Clashing Ideologies leading to change of Equation-
Nikhilesh and Sandeep were childhood friends. They went to the same school and college. 20 years after their college, we see Nikhilesh is an editor of a digital newspaper called India Online and his friend Sandeep is an aspiring right-wing politician who wants to establish India as a Hindu Nation. Sandeep, who was a leftist in his collge days today turned into a right wing nationalist due to a chain of events that happened in the film and that has been shown by the director with brilliance.
3. The modernised adaptation- What was shown by Tagore and Ray was a pre-independence problem, " Swadeshi Movement" Although we have all read in our History books that Swadeshi Movement eventually lead to the Brits leaving India but we don't know what were the sufferings of the poor shopkeepers had been during those days. We get to see that from Nikhlesh's eyes in Ghawre Baire . Although Ghawre baire Aaj tells a completely different story. It tells us about the Hindu Muslim conflicts, the poverty of the Bastar region and a conflict of opinions regarding a dispute piece of land in Bastar. While Nikhilesh and his people wanted to make a Hospital out there for the poor and under privileged of that area, Sandeep and his party wanted to make a Temple. The conflict is also between a man who acts because the action is profitable (Sandip) and one who acts only when it is good (NIkhilesh)
4. Nostalgia- Anirban Bhattacharya, @JisshuSengupta and @TuhinaDas in the lead and @AnjanDutt and Rwitobroto Mukherjee in key roles this film surely triggers nostalgia.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT THE FILM WAS :
The film finds itself burdened by the heavy conflict between its political ideology and the human drama. The scene of Brinda's observation of Sandip, wondering "if only Nikhilesh spoke as passionately", becomes an allegory on the current world seduced by leaders that are brash in speech and direct in action, often to distressing effect. Yet, on the screen, the scenes play on with staid effect. I personally think, Aparna Sen would have done better to focus on the human drama and let the politics evolve through it.
Talking about the acting. Every one has portrayed their character in the bestest way possible. Kudos to Tuhina Das for her work is something I have truly become a fan of. Nevertheless, all the other actors did equally well. Not worthy of these much of negative reviews. Must Watch if you are a Movie Lover.
Gumnaami (2019)
A film which will definitely flare up this Unanswered Question amongst the Youth again. How did Bose die?
"SUBHASH JI, SUBHASH JI .... WO JAANE HIND AA GAYE
HAI NAAZ JISPE HIND KO, WO SHAAN E HIND AA GAYE"
The opening lines of the film will give you Goosebumps which will continue to be there till the very end . In a nutshell, the story deals with much-debated theories related to Netaji's death and according to the director, it is a dramatized version of the Mukherjee Commission Hearings which took place from 1195 to 2005, where the film deals with three theories.
STORY:
The film is based on the Mukherjee Commission Hearings. The film shows the three theories trying to explain the death or disappearance of Subhas Chandra Bose. The film starts with Subhash Chandra Bose at the Congress Conference. A courageous Subhash disagrees to follow the nonviolent methods of Gandhi and resigns from INC. He then travels the world disguised himself to make allies while confronting the British Army.
This scene gets cut and we return to today's scenario where we see an Investigative Journalist, Chandrachur Dhar ( Anirban Bhattacharya) is given an assignment for sending reports on Subhash Chandra Bose Death mystery. He takes up the assignment and spends months to gather evidence and knowledge about Bose. His neglecting attitude towards his wife(Tanusree Chakraborty) compelled her to divorce him. Frustrated about clearing the mysteries of Netaji's death , Dhar quits his job and forms a group, named Mission Netaji entirely dedicated to the purpose of solving the mystery. In 2005, we see him addressing in the Mukherjee Commission clearly denying the Plane Crash Theory which took place in 1945 at Taihoku. He further states that Netaji had returned to India, post independence and he spent the rest of his life as a monk in Uttar Pradesh. Thus the story deals with the facts and evidences related to the three theories and highlights these theories. It also shows how Chandrachur's life gets merged with that of Netaji. Netaji tried to gain independence with his bold movements, Chandrachur in a similar way dealt with the death mysterybof Netaji
PERFORMANCES and DIRECTION:
After watching Rajkumar Rao in Bose: Dead or Alive, I bearly could have thought of anyone else but Raj to play Netaji. But kudos to the Director as his choice for Mr. Chatterji for Subhash is truly admirable. The hardworks, preparations, and the courage to take the role of Netaji as a challenge has all paid off since the film has reached to almost all the masses. There should also be a round of applause for Somnath sir who has made this impossible things come true with his hands. @Srijitmukherji as a director has really done great research on the subject. He is successful in raising a question at the end of the movie about "HOW NETAJI DIED ?"
One thing should be made clear for all the negative comments splashing out due to release of the film. He hasn't given a verdict. He has just told us a beautiful story with a brilliant screenplay and uncompromising and hard-hitting dialogues. Last but not Least, Anirban Bhattacharya has done a class performance. His gradual transformation from a man who considered Netaji to be 'overrated' to a Netaji obsessed person and the story's approach towards how his own life got merged with that of Netaji's is something worth watching. Honestly, he has got a large number of scenes in this movie as compared to Shah Jahan Regency,Uma, Vinci Da , etc
REASONS FOR WHICH YOU SHOULD WATCH THE FILM :
1. Acting, if you want some quality acting to go and watch, seriously this film offers quality and classic acting, Anirban Bhattacharya (My male crush), and Prosenjit Chatterjee
2. Limited drone shots 😂...
3. Scenes give u goosebumps literally.
4. Well written dialogues. The way they were delivered clearly showed how great the casting voice.
5. Voice of Sonu Nigam in the opening credit scene and how the director has shown the entire life journey of Subhash ji in a 4-minute song.
ACCORDING TO ME, IT IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF SRIJIT AFTER BAISHEY SRABON and CHOTUSHKONE. MUST WATCH FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGE GROUPS, ESPECIALLY THE NEW GENERATION

Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Feels fresh even after almost three decades.
RESERVOIR DOGS (09/03/1992):
CAST:
Harvey Keitel as Mr. White/Larry Dimmick
Tim Roth as Mr. Orange/Freddy Newandyke
Michael Madsen as Mr. Blonde/Vic Vega
Chris Penn as "Nice Guy" Eddie Cabot
Steve Buscemi as Mr. Pink
Lawrence Tierney as Joe Cabot
Randy Brooks as Holdaway
Kirk Baltz as Marvin Nash
Edward Bunker as Mr. Blue
Quentin Tarantino as Mr. Brown
REVIEW:
Six criminals who are completely stranger to each other are hired by Joe Cabot to carry out a Diamond Robbery. Right at the beginning, they were given some false names so that they don't get too attached to each other and focus only on their assigned job. Mr. White, a professional criminal; Mr. Orange, a young newcomer; Mr. Blonde, a trigger-happy killer; Mr. Pink, a paranoid neurotic; Mr. Brown; and Mr. Blue But the plan starts to fall apart when the alarm is tripped and the cops show up within moments. Of the group of men, all of whom are identified by colours, only four survive with one being seriously wounded. It is suspected that there is a police informant in the group, but no one is sure who it is.
This was certainly cutting edge for its time and I believe the editing and sequencing of the film is still used in our time. The narrative structure of movies has undergone radical change in modern film, and I'm not sure if this film is chiefly responsible, but it's certainly there in the grammar of modern film. It's quite ingenious how it's put together, and how it's explained, this film of crooks and hoods planning a jewellery robbery that is hamstrung from the get-go. Hamstrung because one of the hoods/crooks is actually a cop that has infiltrated the group. It appears to be a random film, but it is only random in the sense that the order of the narrative is shuffled around. The narrative itself isn't or we'd probably be entering the world of the nonsensical.
So, there's plenty of brain power behind this, and there's humour here too, but the aftershocks of the violent acts are quite disturbing. Tarantino dwells on blood and the physical and emotional aftermath of acts of violence to an extent that it could almost be a poster call (Tarantino's poster call) for anti-violence in the movies. It is quite hard to look at without turning away because he plays on acts of violence and their aftermath for such extended lengths of time. That's one of my personal arguments against this particular Tarantino film. Another would be his extensive and prolific use of obscenity which hits the registers as his violence does. He overdoes it. And he does make you feel it in ways you don't want to feel it. He gives violence and obscenity a bad name not because he uses it, but because he dwells on it extensively and purposefully. A third negative for me is that I found it hard to picture Tarantino as one of the hoods/crooks picked for the jewellery heist. Him sitting around the dinner table with the other hoods/crooks clasping coffee mug with both hands looked strangely out of place with the other hoods/crooks. He's certainly got some imaginative ideas about making film though - his editing, his story idea of a jewellery robbery given a modern make-over, his crook/hoods pointing their guns at one another, his choice of popular music soundtrack, his opening credits of the hoods/crooks walking in their dark suits in slow-motion, his actors which are all quite capable and sometimes funny. Hence four stars. This is something new. New and fairly raw.
Well this movie has adapted a new and very unique technique of storytelling in its time, which feels fresh till today, even after almost 3 decades of the film being released. And if we look back in time it can be called a tribute to Tarantino by himself as the film is characterised by nonlinear storylines, satirical subject matter, aestheticisation of violence, extended scenes of dialogue, ensemble casts, references to popular culture and a wide variety of other films, soundtracks primarily containing songs and score pieces from the 1960s to the 1980s, alternate history, and features of neo-noir film. It had almost all the "TARRANTINO EFFECTS"
It is a must watch for all the movie lovers out there and the screenplay which should be studied by all aspiring directors and Screenplay writers. I have read the screenplay and I personally think that a seldom a 90 minutes screenplay has so detailed narration. the screenplay is full of witty and quotable dialogue ("Mr. Brown? That sounds too much like Mr. S**t.")
