A "Wish dot com" 1883

Being a fan of Matt Barr from Blood & Treasure as well as a fan of westerns and period dramas, I decided to give this a go. It is TERRIBLE. The plot is a patchwork of plotlines from other recent shows, the actors all behave as if they are recovering from recent head injuries or maybe coming out of anesthesia and, for some reason unbeknownst to me, they keep playing generic hard rock music that's just as bad as the overall production value. The dialogue is unlikely and forced, the wardrobe and props are cheap and hasn't seem to have settled on what era it's from yet and Matt Barr is a shambling clown. Even the cinematography is derivative and seems as if it was lifted directly from other recent series. I wonder how many TV executives had to put their heads together to make something this disastrous.

Why does a show in archaic Latin use Elder Futhark for the title?

From the opening theme to silly, mud-caked barbarians this is just another bad low fantasy show. None of the disparate elements fit together and even the worst history student knows everything happening is wrong and grossly out of place. This is supposed to take place in the 8th century BCE but what I saw was practically a neolithic society. Whoever wrote this farce needs to read up on the Etruscans.

Frost and Pegg back together again!

Not an incessant laugh-fest like some of their films, not even as joke-laiden as Spaced, there is still the characteristic rapier wit in this supernatural/sci-fi adventure. Malcolm Mcdowell is clearly reprising his role as Caligula and refuses to wear pants. Also, there's an interesting mystery! At times it's reminiscent of the Ghostbusters franchise but it's a clever, well-written and fully developed story unlike anything the duo's done this far. It's ambitious and lives up to the ambition. Kinda sad Mr. Big Movie Star Pegg doesn't have more screen time. Not their best work if you're expecting the duo's typical hour and 1/2 of non-stop jokes but, like I said, this is a neat story.

Ponderous.

Very slow to start, not at all like The Haunting of Hill House, sparsely supernatural and rife with personal tragedy. A very old fashioned sort of Gothic horror story (ironically) set in the 1980s (Where's the Bauhaus and Joy Division? 😅) Not for the kind of viewer who hates waiting for the other shoe to drop. The ending was pretty slick, though.

I was expecting gothic horror...

... what I got, instead, was unwashed white trash. I quit about 20 minutes into the first episode. Judging by the solid consensus of abysmal reviews, this isn't worth "waiting for it to get good". Not sure why Hulu that most bait and switch tactics with titles and descriptions will work for them. This miserable show is literally clickbait.

Elucidating.

I knew this would be good when I saw journalist Simcha Jacobovici in the preview. He's a great investigative journalist with an eclectic background. So, going in, you don't have to rely on Samuel L. Jackson's name alone. I learned a LOT from watching this (and have, so far, only seen three episodes). It is nice to see a documentary full of facts and not just pathos or emotional reactions to thinks presented. This is obviously an emotional issue and I think that, with a little searching your own family tree, anyone can find empathy with regards to the plight of African slaves-especially if you had family in living in Ireland prior to 1860. And, to put it bluntly, the veiled racism in some of these reviews is disheartening. But, this is America. God forbid anyone disrupt the caste system!

A certain kind of film for a certain kind of movie buff.
2 October 2020
If movies like the Evil Dead series and The Fearless Vampire Killers are your cup of tea then you need to see this film. I'm personally glad t see films like this are still being made in the 21st century. It is a clever mixture of slapstick humor and practical effects and acting so "serious" that it is hilarious. The werewolf costumes are top-notch (on par with The Howling series) but won't scare anyone over the age of five. That, too, may be deliberate-the werewolves look ridiculous because the idea of werewolves is, in and of itself, ridiculous-but I could be overthinking and giving the production crew too much credit. The acting is silly, like a highschool play. Overall the film feels very "theatrical". It's fun, it's silly (maybe a little TOO silly in parts) and it's not for everyone.
