Wuuunderful musical documentary
8 August 2003
I never heard of the director before, or Ry Cooder, either, so I can't trash them. I just know I was fascinated and enthralled by this movie, and I am SO glad they made it. It is musical history that was almost gone, almost lost to us forever. But now we have this wonderful documentary, and the music is preserved, along with the stories and the background that go with it. And it is fantastic music -- beautiful, soulful music. I offer my thanks to those who had the imagination and the foresight and the dedication to make it.

Yawn
19 May 2002
The plot of this movie sounded fairly interesting so I tried it. All I can say is, 'don't waste your time.' The plot was poorly explained. The cinematography was amateurish. The acting was bad.

We have become used to seeing so much better that it is jarring to see a movie done this badly. This movie was truly awful.

Dumb
30 April 2002
This was a dumb movie. That the plot springs from a CB radio should have been a tip-off. Do you know anybody who uses a CB radio these days? You probably won't know anybody as dumb as the guys in this movie, either, because if you ever came across anybody like them, you would have run. They do dumb things, and then dumber things. You're just saying, "Oh, no," all the way through it.

The movie IS suspenseful so if that is what you are after, it won't disappoint there. Just don't ask too many questions like, "How did she get here, or how would he have known that." Suspend logic.

Growing up in the '50's wasn't all that different
13 January 2002
This was a wonderful movie about coming of age. The characters in the movie were SO real, even though they were in high school in the '50s. Just shows how little people change in nature.

The movie followed three story lines very well: the older brother, the younger brother, and the father. They all had difficult-to-them things to deal with and each learned something valuable in the process, both about themselves and the world in which they lived.

Integrating the three story lines was done flawlessly. The movie was also very tastefully done -- a very wholesome movie in a world of trashy movies.

Wonderful Romance for mature people
15 February 2001
I chose this movie for our Valentine's night movie and it was perfect! It is a romance for and about mature people -- that is, people in the later years of their lives. If you are in your teens or even 20's, this movie may not appeal to you. And if you like hot, sweaty sexual scenes, it will definitely disappoint. It is flirtatious, funny, elegant, tasteful, uplifting and amusing. The scenery and setting at Lake Como, Italy in 1937 are serene and beautiful. They don't make many movies like this anymore; finding this 1995 jewel was a rare pleasure.
