After seeing Romeo and Juliet I wanted to see more of Olivia Hussey's work, in this film she is really perfect in this role of Lolita with the youthful beauty, maybe too youg because she plays a 15 years old who has an affair with a man twice her age! So of course the film is from the late 60s / 70s when it was not a big deal. But I admit that apart from this plot of scandalous and forbidden love story, is the wife going to catch them and all, the movie was a little boring.

If you don't know the pre-code movies of the 1930s, check out this movie! Barbara Stanwyck is excellent and more beautiful than ever, her character despite the bad deeds is so endearing, we understand why all the men who cross her path fall under her spell!

Still a very charming movie even if it could have been better done

I think I saw all the other adaptations before this one (except that horrible zombie movie), obviously compared to the others it is missing some elements: some parts of the story have been skipped, the costumes are not adapted to the period , and Greer Garson may not have been the ideal actress to play Elizabeth Bennet (Vivien Leigh absolutely wanted the role). Yet I liked it a lot, the characters are well played, the costumes are still magnificent, Greer Garson is a good actress and when she spoke she seemed younger and suited for the role (even if she seemed a bit Greta Garboesque when she wasn't speaking), moreover she has a good chemistry with Laurence Olivier. To conclude, it may not be the best adaptation but it is a very charming film (in addition to being the first adaptation and from another era).
