Hannibal (2001)
For lovers of the « haute cuisine »
Ten years ago, Jonathan Demme and his « The Silence of the Lambs » marked a new era in the thrillers. He presented to the world a refined serial killer who captured the respect and admiration of the film lovers. Hannibal Lecter, as a character, had the strengh of a Rick Blaine, the awareness of a Don Vito Corleone and the fame of a Jams Bond. Demme brought Hopkins to life and Hopkins IS Lecter.Who better than Hopkins to give to the « Cannibal » that old Brithish coolness? However, ten years later, Demme gave place to Ridley Scott. A talented director, no doubt but it was not enough. The movie had much potencial. Saddenly, Julianne Moore was not a wise choice. She could not show the fragile side of Clarice Starling. Jodie could. Wonderfully. Unfortunately, the film was a bit of a deception. Too sadist, sometimes, as it was the novel. Hopkins saved it: he is the last of the Olivier's acting School. Also wonderful is the make-up of Gary Oldman (Mason Verger)and the scene of his death: Dantesque. The gore scene of Ray Liotta will win a deserved place in the History of the Movie pictures. Too little, however.Lecter deserved better...And for the younger generations that do not know Giancarlo Giannini, go to your videoshop and ask for a movie named « Seven Beauties»...
Unbreakable (2000)
Finally, a real-life super-hero
Without a shadow of a doubt, this is THE forgotten movie of the 2000's Academy Awards night. It's quite unfair to compare this picture with the previous « The Sixth Sense ». Both confirm Shyamalan as a talented screenwriter and director. The plot of this film is far from being vulgar: a Security man (played by Bruce Willis who will never be a versatile actor) escapes unharmful from a train accident. After finding out he's the only survivor of the accident,he will be snatched away from reality by an Alter-Ego (played masterly by Samuel L. Jackson)who believes that Willis has what it takes to be a real-life hero. The final scene is breathtaking, but Shyalaman could have passed on the superflous subtitles that describe what happened after this final scene. Conclusion: it's a masterpiece of the Contemporany movies and Jackson is (after so many flops)as great as he was on «Pulp Fiction».
Uga Uga (2000)
The return of a good-old nonsense soap opera
Who said that a soap-opera must be dramatic? In this Brasilian soap, one can not stop laughing all the way!! Good script, good acting and... good girls. It's the confirmation of the new blood of the Brasilian actors and i think that we will hear soon about Mariana Ximenes,Ângelo Paes Leme, Danielle Winits and Nívea Steinmann. Watch out the nonsense jokes of characters like dona Pierina(played by veteran Nair Bello) and Nikos Karabastos( played by the Brazilian living-legend Lima Duarte).Truly unmissable!!
