The Dead Don't Die (2019)
The Dead Don't Die Review
An extremely dry and satirical look into the zombie genre as a whole, which is to be expected from a filmmaker like Jim Jarmusch.
The front-runner's of the cast are Bill Murray along with Adam Driver and their chemistry really works and makes the movie more enjoyable to watch. There's also Tilda Swinton, Selena Gomez and a multitude of other characters who either feel really underused or straight up undeveloped or pointless.
With a lot of other technical aspects being just okay or passable this ends up being a fun zombie flick with some great dry humour and a lot of loose ends that lead to nowhere.
Light of My Life (2019)
Light of My Life Review
Its a minimalistic drama with thriller elements and two amazing performances in Casey Affleck and Anna Pniowsky and its pretty great. The score is beautiful and it's used really well, the camera work feels very still and focused and the overall look and colour correction of the film is great.
In conclusion this movie set out to accomplish themes of fatherhood and paranoia that comes with it in a really realistic and honest way and i think it did a pretty good job in doing so even though its set in a very different world from ours.
The Highwaymen (2019)
The Highwaymen Review,
This feels like such a wasted opportunity, with such an interesting premise and the star power of Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson this could have been amazing, but instead, we got possibly one of the most boring and slow paced films i have seen in a long time.
From a filmmaking standpoint, this movie is not bad but also its nothing impressive, everything about it from the score to the camera work is just so bland and uninteresting, there are fun to watch and engaging scenes to find in this movie, like the scene Kevin Costner's character has with Clyde's father but there's only a handful of scenes like that . The actors do a good job but that's about as far as this movie goes. Really disappointed with this one and wouldn't recommend it to anybody.
Thunder Road (2018)
Thunder Road Review
The most impressive thing about Thunder Road is Jim Cummings incredible performance and the fact that he also wrote and directed this film is noteworthy. The plot does a really good job of portraying a character that is hitting rock bottom in his life where nothing seems to go his way.
Certain scenes made me feel uncomfortable but in a good way and i attribute that to a really genuine and real feeling dialogue paired with incredible camera work, one-shots and zooms that really elevate the film in general. The only thing i took issue with is that the score felt really bland and underwhelming but that's about it. This movie makes me really excited for what Jim does next and it is definitely worth watching.
At Eternity's Gate (2018)
At Eternity's Gate Review
From the get-go i can definitely say it's not for everyone, you're either gonna get enthralled into this examination of a mind of Van Gogh and the relationship this film shows between him and his paintings as well as how he perceives nature or you're not.
The camera work that feels handheld, color correction and the usage of POV shots really help to get you a glimpse into the world that he was seeing as well as immerse you into the movie itself. Willem Dafoe does an excellent job portraying this character and his performance paired with a beautifully done score help make even the long sequences where there is no dialogue engaging and fun to watch. Overall this movie grabbed me from the beginning, it has so much to say and i can't stop thinking about the way it says it.
Booksmart (2019)
Booksmart Review
Wow, i didn't expect that at all and i
loved it.
This movie does so many things right and there's a lot to like about it. The well-written comedy and jokes hit the right note, the really stellar directing from Olivia Wilde should be noteworthy as this is her directional debut, and of course the main characters portrayed amazingly by Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein who have amazing chemistry together which just makes the emotional punches of this film that much more effective.
Although i do have tiny problems with it like the overabundance of soundtrack it is still one of the best comedies i have seen in a while and i honestly can't wait to rewatch it, also it has a well executed one shot and who doesn't love those.
